OR Top Prospect Showcase - 2022 Prospects (pt. 4)

Dan Jurik
Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

Keizer, OR - Over the course of one full week, we had the opportunity to see over 100 players across multiple events at Volcanoes Stadium in Keizer.

Summer events events such as this provide players with the opportunity to build their profile with the most up-to-date information and video footage. All players in attendance receive an online profile with their verified statistics, player report, picture and video. Additionally, all subsequent stories written about a prospect will be linked to the player’s profile, ultimately creating a one-stop shop for recruiters.

Showcases help identify which prospects have asserted themselves towards the top of their class as well as who might be one of the next youngsters to emerge onto the scene. They also serve as potential identifiers for invite-only events such as our Future Games and Junior Future Games

Hands start high & tight near back shoulder. Knee knock load with a short forward drift into landing. Hands shift down with a subtle scap load back. Keeps everything tight & connected in swing. Barrel works inside of the ball & there’s noticeable strength at point of contact. Stays balanced thru finish against a strong, posted front leg. Defensively, handled all his opportunities at the hot corner. Starts in a wide base with some pre-pitch movement towards the hitter. Short, choppy footwork when making his first move laterally. Keeps a low center of gravity while funneling ball in. Tight, quick exchange into throwing motion. Throws from a ¾ - low ¾ slot with short, bent arm action. On the mound, uses a simple, mechanically sound delivery. Has some movement in his hands to keep rhythm/tempo consistent with his actions. Stays balanced and tall at leg lift. Minimal collapse on his back leg as he gets down the slope. Shoulder line stays level into footstrike. Lower half opens up with a clean line of direction towards target as front side stays closed. Tight, continuous arm path that stays on time with his motion. Aggressive hand speed out front. Kept everything down in the bottom half of the zone throughout.

Silas Jolicoeur 1B / LHP / Westview , OR / 2022

Large framed at 6-foot-2, 250 pounds with a strong lower half. Simple, relaxed set up in the box. Starts tall with a narrow base and hands elevated over back shoulder. Loads hands during forward move to create a better bat angle prior to initiating swing. Stride foot gets down with clean direction towards pitcher and weight centered. Fluid barrel path thru the zone. Arms stay tight to body & avoid getting too extended. Showed quality bat speed with a peak at 73.70 mph. Uses strong core/lower half to create rotation barrel action into contact with some loft as he finishes. Defensively, fits well at 1B with L/L profile. Flashed solid, repeatable footwork around the bag with a controlled tempo/demeanor. Shows confidence in his glove hand and stays quiet while receiving the ball. Smooth exchange into throwing motion, Manipulated arm slot as needed & showed feel for controlling his throws out of different release angles.

Cole Jorgensen C / 3B / La Grande, OR / 2022

5-foot-11, 180 pounds with an athletic build and pound for pound strength in his frame. Offensively, took a mature round of BP with consistent hard contact. Sets up with an athletic base and some bend in his lower half. Creates slight barrel movement with hands that syncs up with a low leg lift. Keeps flexion in lead arm to help create easy barrel whip into contact and effortless bat speed. Present gap-to-gap power with easy lift on the ball. Hitterish actions with noticeable feel for the barrel. At catcher, showed a low, one-knee set up while receiving. Stays low and quiet with a soft glove hand. Works from a staggered set-up when getting out of crouch and throwing down to 2nd. Lower half turns slightly off center and allows quicker alignment in his throwing motion. Quick exchange into a high, compact arm path with high ¾ release. Aggressive finish at release with backside coming thru on all throws.

Kellen Krebs SS / Lake Oswego, OR / 2022

5-foot-10, 150 pounds with a square frame and wiry build. High waisted athlete. In the box, begins with a narrow, slightly open stance with tall posture. Relaxed set-up with barrel in a flat position on rear shoulder. Closes off lower half after taking a low forward stride. Hands push back with a level load. Creates consistent stretch against front side prior to beginning swing. Shows controlled bat speed with an uphill path thru contact. Could see more power as frame continues to fill out, especially to pull-side. Defensively, moved well at SS and should stay on the dirt long-term. Consistent fielding actions with a dependable glove hand while receiving. Footwork was solid throughout with sneaky quickness. Solid exchange into throwing motion. Low ¾ slot with a high arm path. Exchange and arm strength could improve quickly as the strength continues to come.

Nathan Marshall SS / RHP / West Albany , OR / 2022

Lean, projectable frame with length throughout build at 6-foot-2, 160 pounds. Sets up in the box with feet outside of shoulder width and lower half square to the pitcher. Hands start high then pull down & back as they load with his leg kick into stride. Creates noticeable separation/torque through his core to help generate bat speed. Barrel works thru the zone on a rotational path with a level finish after contact. Abbreviated, 2 handed finish. Up the middle type approach throughout BP. Defensively, very active footwork on the dirt with short, quick steps. Keeps body control while moving laterally. Attacks the ball with confidence, getting glove hand down as he takes his momentum thru the ball and directly into throwing motion. Easy exchange. Clean, whippy arm action with high ¾ release. On the mound, mixes his tempo up with slight hesitation in delivery. High leg lift with big hip turn towards his back shoulder. Flexible lower half with easy range of motion. Drop and drive action at hand break. Slight shoulder tilt as he works down the mound into his landing. Arm action stays bent after he separates with slight stab on his backside before working up to a high, over the top release. Tall, upright finish out over his front side.

Xavier Otto SS / 2B / Tualatin , OR / 2022

5-foot-10, 140 pounds with some slope in his upper half and a proportional frame. Offensively, sets up in a wide base with weight centered in the middle of his lower half. Shifts to get weight onto back-side as he takes a low leg kick into balance. Hands stay just beyond back shoulder with a subtle load prior to swing. Barrel has depth into the zone with a level path into contact. Gets full rotation from lower half against a posted front leg. High, one-handed finish. Defensively, gets in an athletic base with his pre-pitch actions with a tall lower half and slight hip hinge in his posture. Then uses a quick hop to widen out as the ball gets to the hitter. Funnels ball in from a wide base, sinking hips to get down to the ball. Upper half stays stacked over glove hand. Solid exchange into ¾ release. Keeps momentum behind the ball after release.

Keenan Sanford 3B / RHP / Wilsonville, OR / 2022

5-foot-11, 200 pounds with some present strength in frame and a balanced build between upper and lower half. Lower half starts narrowly open with a tall, upright stance. Stays level thru contact, using his core/lower into a rotational finish against a strong front side. Defensively, handled his opportunities at the hot corner on this look. Starts from a set position pre-pitch with a wide, balanced base. Deliberate, controlled tempo while ranging laterally. Head stays quiet as he works towards the ball. Funnels in from the center of his body then shows a glove tap exchange into a ¾ release point. On the mound, pitched exclusively out of the stretch with consistent direction towards his target. Hands come set at chest height and stay there as he drives lead leg up into balance. Slight bend on his back leg with a hip hinge at hand break. Shoulders stay level during stride and into landing. Arm path pushes out and back then gets shorter/compact as he gets to ¾ release. Aggressive finish out front with some hand speed at release. Keeps eyes on target as he gets out over his front side.

Hands stay tight & consistently keep barrel inside of the ball. Showed best contact middle/oppo with a contact approach throughout BP. Throws hands to the ball with a short finish after contact. Defensively, looked comfortable on the dirt and showed a dependable glove-hand on all of his opportunities. Receives the ball easily with soft actions as he funnels in. Takes ball in on his glove hand side, which helps him get momentum going towards target quicker with his lower half. Sound, repeatable footwork as he exchanged into throwing motion. Released ball from a low ¾ slot and showed the ability to get throws out quickly.
