PBR Spotlight Game: BC High vs St. John's Prep

The season came to an end for the Eagles of BC High as the pitching allowed 12 walks and hit another 8 batters in route to a 10-5 defeat at the hands of St. John’s Prep.

Senior RHP Andrew Farris earned the win with two scoreless innings in relief of classmate Justin Kerhulas, who struck out five while allowing five runs on five hits over 4 1/3.

Junior Nolan Webb pitched the final three innings to seal it for the Prep. Freshman Mike Vasil struggled in the loss allowing 12 base runners over 2 2/3 innings and seven runs.

Senior Keith Leavitt was on base five times for the Prep, including three hits and three RBI and classmate Ryan Spurr added three hits of his own to guide the offense.

Senior centerfielder Ryan Tropeano tripled to lead off the game for BC High and scored one batter later on a single by leftfielder Pat Koehane for a 1-0 lead.

The Prep didn’t waste any time erasing the deficit in the bottom half. Leavitt singled to lead off and junior center fielder Jacob Yish walked. After a fielder’s choice, senior third baseman Ed McNamara was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Spurr. One pitch later St. John’s had the lead as Spurr ripped one into right center, scoring two and putting the Prep on top.

In the top of the 3rd it looked like BC High had tied the game when junior catcher Luke Rafferty hit a would be sacrifice fly to right field. However, the umpires ruled that senior Joe Roddy left early from second base and thus the run scored by Koehane did not count, keeping the score at 2-1 Prep.

The flood gates opened in the bottom half of the 3rd as the Prep put up a five spot that would chase Vasil from the game.

Spurr singled to right to lead off and stole second. One out later shortstop Jacob Spada walked and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. After a strike out, catcher Jack Arend was issued his first of four walks of the day and Leavitt made it pay with a two-run single to right. With runners at the corners Leavitt stole second and on an errant throw, Arend came in to score extending the lead to 5-1.

Vasil was then pulled for LHP Chris Murray following a walk to Yish. Murray immediately walked senior right fielder Nick Latham to load the bases again. McNamara then delivered a two-run single to right-center, bringing in two more and added to the lead.

BC High would mount a comeback in the 5th.

Senior right fielder Geoff Stillman walked with one out and Koehane singled for the third time. A passed ball would move both runners up in front of Roddy who singled home Stillman, chasing Kerhulas from the game in favor of Farris. The damage was not done though as next batter, DH Steve Ohanesian hit a sacrifice fly to center, making the score 7-3. Next, junior Brendan McDonald pinch hit for Rafferty and ripped a double down the leftfield line, scoring Roddy and cutting the lead to three.

Murray ran into some control problems in the 6th, after recording two outs and sophomore first baseman Andrew Selima on 2nd, he walked Arend, Leavitt and Yish in succession to extend the deficit to 8-4.

In the 7th it was more of the same as Murray hit McNamara to start the inning. Sophomore Chris Francoeur pinch ran and went to second on a wild pitch. After Spurr singled, senior Charlie Blackington took over on the mound and allowed an RBI single to Selima, making it 9-4. Two outs later Arend walked to load the bases and Leavitt was hit, bringing in the tenth and final run of the night for the Prep.

Webb was able to keep BC High in check over the final three innings. The lone run was scored in the 8th on a sacrifice fly by Tropeano, scoring junior first baseman Tim Burnes to make the score 10-5. That is as close as the score would get as Webb worked around a walk and error in the 9th to clinch the victory.
