PBR Spotlight Game: Team Mets 18u vs OBJ (White) 18u

NORTH YORK- Sunday was the first day of summer and things got heated on the field between the Toronto Mets 18U and Ontario Blue Jays 18U, as they battled for first place at Bond Park. The Mets won game one 6-4 and game two ended in a 4-4 tie due to a bench-clearing brawl.

Game one, the Ontario Blue Jays got off to a good start in the first inning, 2B/OF J.D. Williams drove in a pair of runs with a double to right-centrefield to give his team and early 2-0 lead.

In the Mets second, after the first two hitters were retired, outfielder Wyatt Larmand lined a single up the middle and later scored on an RBI single by outfielder  Nathan Egert to cut the deficit in half.

The Blue Jays restored their two-run lead in the third thanks to a leadoff single by shortstop Mason Copeland and later scored on Williams’ sacrifice fly. But, the Mets kept clawing back. In the bottom of the inning, outfielder Eric Senior lined a double to leftfield and scored on first baseman Tyler Dobie’s RBI single to centre to make it 3-2 Blue Jays after three.

Toronto batted around in the fourth and scored three runs, including a two-run double from Senior that put the Mets ahead 5-3. Both teams added a run in the sixth and the Blue Jays brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but a long fly out to centre ended the first game 6-4.

Right-hand starter Austin Tanfield picked up the win for the Mets going six innings allowing four runs on nine hits, while striking out five and walking three.

For the Blue Jays, right-handed starter Cole White went three and one-third innings allowing five runs on seven hits, one strikeout, two walks and took the loss.

Game two was a close battle right from the opening pitch. Mets’ right-handed starter Bryson MacLean tip-toed out of a bases loaded jam in the first with a fly out to rightfield and Larmand threw out the runner at home tagging from third for the double play.

Mets’ infielder Ryohei Suzuki lead the bottom of the first with a walk, stole second and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Senior to give the Mets a 1-0 lead.

The Blue Jays tied the game in the third thanks to an RBI single from outfielder Matt Jones. Toronto answered quickly in the bottom half to go ahead 2-1. They had a chance to extend their lead in the fourth, but Blue Jays’ right-hand pitcher Rashan Moursalien managed to get out of a bases loaded jam after three walks in the frame with a strikeout and groundball to first.

In the seventh, the Blue Jays used their patience at the plate to work a pair of walks and a hit batter to loaded the bases with one out. First baseman Ryan Rijo lined a two-run double to rightfield, followed by a sacrifice fly from Jones to put the Blue Jays ahead 4-2. Bottom of the inning, C/INF Kristian Webb lined a leadoff double to leftfield, Dobie reached first after the first baseman dropped a pop fly near the pitcher’s mound, and with one out, OF/1B Justin Richards cashes in one with a single to cut the lead to 4-3. Dobie hustled on the play and managed to go first to third on the hit and it proved to pay off, as he would later score on a wild pitch to tie the game. This one needed extra innings.

It was a tight game right from the beginning. There was a clear rivalry between the Blue Jays and Mets as they fought for the division crown. There were a few words between both dugouts being exchanged during game two and ended up boiling over in the bottom of the ninth. Tensions flared as both benches cleared and a few punches thrown before coaches and teammates tried to break up the altercation. Unfortunately some of that tension started to brew in the stands between fans as well and the umpires made a wise decision to call the game as both coaches from the Mets and Blue Jays came to the screen behind home plate and asked parents to calm themselves.

This battle will surely continue next weekend during the PBLO playoffs in Windsor and be a very exciting weekend as a champion is crowned.
