Q and A with 2013 Virginia Tech Commit: Tom Stoffel (Northmont HS)

Tom Stoffel, LHP/OF, Northmont HS, Class of 2013

PBR: Why did you choose Virginia Tech?

Stoffel: When I was down there everything just felt right. I felt comfortable with the coaches and loved everything about the VT. I think its a great place for me and will give me many great opportunities.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Stoffel: I took a lot of unofficial visits to schools in the Midwest and south. In the end, VT was the place for me.

PBR: You have made your commitment very early.  Why did you chose to make your decision so soon and are you finished with the recruiting process?

Stoffel: I sat down and looked at all the different options and how it could go. I loved VT and I think it's one of the best schools with the best opportunities for me to be successful on and off the field. I'm done and committed to VT.

PBR: Where did the Virginia Tech coaches first see you?

Stoffel: Last fall, I was down in Florida playing in a Perfect Game tourney with a team selected from a previous PBR showcase.

PBR: What role do the coaches expect you to play your first year on campus?

Stoffel: They expect me to be a Friday night pitcher and during the rest of week play some OF, DH, and maybe some 1B.

PBR: How important was it to play down south and in the ever so touch ACC?

Stoffel: It wasn't everything, but I love warm weather so it is for sure a bonus. I think playing in the ACC will challenge me and make me a better player. And that's what is most important to me.

PBR: What are some of your strengths as a baseball player and what are some things that you are hoping to work on before your senior season?

Stoffel: I think my strengths are my mindset and my bat. I think my drive is also a strength; I'm always practicing. Some things I'm hoping to work on before my senior season is power and speed.

PBR:  What team do you play for in the summer?

Stoffel: Cincy Flames

PBR: What sort of sacrifices did you have to make to play a travel intensive schedule during the summer?? What sort of advice would you pass on to players looking to make the same decision?

Stoffel: Your hometown social life kind of dies. It's affected for sure, but you've got your teammates. Also, driving hours for practice and games is a burden, but to me it's all worth it. Some advice I would give is don't stress it. Have fun while playing and work hard and everything will take care of itself.

PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?

Stoffel: My family for sure. I wouldnt be who I am today without them and they support me all the way in everything I do.

PBR: What were your stats this spring season at Northmont?

Stoffel: .402 average, 8 doubles, 3 triples, 4 HR, 39 RBI. 19.1 IP, 35K, 2.53 ERA

PBR: Who is the toughest hitter that you have faced in Ohio?

Stoffel: Benintendi
