Team Canada JNT vs Fort Lauderdale Stars Recap

While the weather here in Florida began to finally heat up, Team Canada’s bats went cold on Tuesday following an eight hit performance on Monday but it was yet another good showing for the Canadian arms.

2021 Stetson commit Simon Lusignan was handed the start and despite allowing four hits, not many were hit hard and the Okotoks product didn’t run into much trouble on the mound.

Lusignan recorded one strikeout and allowed just one run that reached via error and that was all Ft. Lauderdale would need as their pitching staff held Canada off the board for the 4-0 victory. The right-hander originally out of Quebec was up to 91, sitting 88-90 with his fastball.

2020 Connors State commit Vic Domingo came on in relief to work three innings as well and proved to be a more difficult at-bat for the Stars hitters. Domingo struck out four while allowing an earned run on two walks and one hit in what was his first appearance in the red and white uniform.

It was another good showing for Domingo after T12 were he missed a lot of bats as well and the B.C. righty sat 86-88 during his outing Tuesday.

The zero on the scoreboard doesn’t show much offence but Gio Mezzomo of the Coquitlam Reds did his part at the dish with two doubles to his pull-side including one that would have had a shot at leaving the yard if the wind wasn’t against him.

Despite putting himself in scoring position in back-to-back at-bats, the Canadian squad wasn’t able to cash in and the only other hit on the day was a single off the bat of 2020 Canisius commit Max Grant.

Walks from Elijha Hammill, Russ Young and Mason Dobie provided the rest of the offence but the strikeouts were a theme again for a young offence up against multiple pitchers working in the mid-90’s range.

All pitchers completed their three innings of expected work on Tuesday and uncommitted 2021 Caleb Clark was no exception as he closed out the game for Canada. The GLC left-hander struck out two while allowing three hits and two walks.

Clark is another pitcher on this staff taking part in his first trip with Team Canada and will look to bounce back when he takes the mound against the Detroit Tigers on Saturday.

Team Canada is back at it again tomorrow with a 1:00 p.m. start against the Phillies in St. Petersburg before they go across town on Thursday to take on the Blue Jays in Dunedin.
