Top-10 Profiles of 2020: No. 2 Alex Stanwich
December 30, 2020
As the year starts to unwind, our staff will start to highlight the top-10 most viewed profiles from 2020 - starting at 10 and counting down.
You’ll potentially be hard pressed to find a prospect in the entire country, for the 2022 class, that possesses a toolsier skill-set than Lincoln-Way East’s Alex Stanwich - our second most viewed profile of 2020. An absolute physical specimen, Stanwich is the number one player in Illinois for his class and is ranked 33rd nationally, too.
Built like a linebacker at 6-foot-1 and 195-pounds of muscle, Stanwich has an array of loud tools that jump out when you watch him play. To begin with, he runs a 6.58 60-yard dash with eye-popping athleticism that certainly stands out on the diamond. He compliments that speed with an absolute cannon for an arm, uncorking throws to home in showcase settings regularly in the 90 mph range with his best topping out at 95 mph. This type of athletic profile is rare and gives Stanwich a legitimate shot to stick in center field in the future.
Stanwich has truly game-changing offensive potential harnessed within a powerful right-handed stroke. He attended our Top Tier Scout Day this June and consistently made loud contact, posting an average exit speed of 89.72 mph. His hardest hit ball that day left his barrel at 104.23 mph and traveled 357 feet, both among the top batted ball numbers from that event.
Although he’s not known for his work on the mound, we saw Stanwich take the bump in a playoff game at The Rock this summer and he didn’t disappoint. His fastball touched 91 mph, sitting in the 88-90 mph range throughout his outing, and he routinely spun off 2,500-to-2,700 RPM breaking balls - further adding to an already impressive skill-set.
Shooter Hunt, our National Crosschecker, highlighted Stanwich in his “Prospect Report: 2022 OF Deep Dive” earlier this month, having this to say about him:
“What makes Stanwich so intriguing in this class, and likely to intrigue MLB scouts moving forward, is the “freaky-athleticism” that he brings to the diamond. The Tennessee-recruit is off the charts with regards to advanced metrics including being a 6.5-runner who produces 106 mph exit velocities to go along with a 95 mph arm from the outfield. His combination of speed and power will be impossible to overlook in 2022, and while there can be some rawness to the approach, that is to be expected from a northern hitter with less at-bats under his belt. Any swing-and-miss that is present, is quickly made up for with the plus-power potential in the bat, and his swing metrics per Blast put him in the upper echelon of every category. Though the power he generates at the plate will more than allow for a shift to a corner outfield spot, his potential to play centerfield long term is likely to be something that scouts are locked in on, and could elevate his stock should he demonstrate an ability to shine at a premium position. Above all else, Stanwich has “carrying tools” with unteachable athleticism, and the upside of what he may become after 1000+ at-bats is sure to excite many organizations.”
A Tennessee commit, it’s hard to imagine a scenario where several professional teams don’t fall in love with Stanwich throughout next year’s summer circuit. He’s still finding ways to further refine his craft, but the upside here is quite monstrous.
