Updated Class of 2023 Player Rankings (April)

We are excited to release the updated Class of 2023 Rankings.

At the onset of the class rankings as freshman, the list will start smaller until we have seen a bigger body of work. Unfortunately, the lack of a high school season, to this point, has futher reduced our ability to see the state's top Class of 2023 prospects.

Typically, by the time a class reaches it's senior year, the rankings expand to 400 players.

We are excited to be back at the ballpark to see more Class of 2023 prospects.

That being said, we have had the pleasure of seeing a number of solid players this past year. Prospects are popping up left and right, making velocity jumps, improving 60-yard dash times and showing more power with the bat.

Below we will take a look at “Uncommitted Guys At The Top”, "Southpaws Taking The Stage”, some of the top uncommitted prospects by position and "On The Cusp".

Uncommitted Guys At The Top

Colt Emerson SS / C / John Glenn, OH / 2023

Report: There was no change at  No. 1 as Colt Emerson (John Glenn) once again proved he deserved that title after shining at this years’ Preseason All-State. The hit tool is so advanced for his class with the ability to manipulate the barrel to pretty much do whatever he wants with the baseball. Defensively, you could throw him behind the dish or in the infield and sleep easy. Already holds D1 offers and has plenty more to come.

Clayton Burdette RHP / SS / Moeller, OH / 2023

Report: At No. 2 we have arguably the prospect with the highest ceiling in the class in Clay Burdette (Moeller). The type of prospect that it doesn’t take an expert to point out on the baseball field. As a position guy he reminds me of Zach Dezenzo, a previous Super 60 participant and current Freshman All-American at Ohio State.

Burdette is long at 6-foot-3 and doesn’t look out of place at shortstop although he may outgrow the position moving forward. At the plate he has run producer written all over him as we’ve seen him take a fastball off the top of the wall at 99 mph off the bat. As good as he is as a position player also has a huge velocity ceiling on the mound. Another guy who currently holds D1 offers and should get many more ... my guess as a two-way prospect.

Cameron Gilkerson OF / 1B / Hilliard Darby, OH / 2023

Report: The most explosive bat available in the class is Cam Gilkerson (Hilliard Darby). The ball just looks a bit different off the bat of Gilkerson, offering unrivaled pop in his class. Scouts are going to be drawn to the combination of physicality (6-foot-2, 205-pounds) and athleticism. A guy you could sit in watch take BP all day and we’ve seen him translate it into game more than a few times.

Southpaws Take Stage

This class is very deep with left-handed arms with five cracking the top 30, four of which are uncommitted.

Blaine Albright LHP / 1B / Bath, OH / 2023

Report: The lone commit of the group Blaine Albright, a future Ohio State Buckeye, jumped up a spot into the top 3 after a very impressive bullpen. The Bath HS product is physical with a fastball up to 86 mph and that arm really works. The velocity ceiling is through the roof as the young lefty has as much upside as any in this class.

Gavin Ehrhardt OF / LHP / Avon, OH / 2023

Report: The highest rated uncommitted southpaw at the moment is Gavin Ehrhardt (Avon HS). We’ve spoken to multiple coaches that have been around Gavin and everyone raves about his work ethic, type of person he is. Skill set wise he is up to 85 mph on bump, can spin a breaking ball, is a 6.8 runner, and has run producer thump also from the left side in the box. You could make an argument his highest upside is on the mound but he still comfortably is labeled a two-way prospect.

TJ Takats LHP / 1B / Perrysburg, OH / 2023

Report: It’s impossible to predict the future but when gathering information some prospects crystal ball indicates a very bright future, which is the case with TJ Takats (Perrysburg). Let me give you some context on why we think TJ has a huge upside ... 6-foot-3 two-way prospect, video jumps out at you/everything works on both sides of the ball, very good athlete (Also the Quarterback of football team), if there is a season he will be a two-way contributor on varsity as a freshman for Perrysburg. Sky's the limit here.

Jacob Tabor LHP / 1B / Olentangy Orange, OH / 2023

Report: Another uncommitted, young lefty that stood out this winter is Jacob Tabor. Tabor would have been on the varsity roster for Olentangy Orange, one of the most loaded team’s in Columbus. Leaves little left to be desired physically. Tabor is 6-foot-3, shows mobility and athleticism on the mound, and there isn’t much if anything to correct with the delivery. It’s not often you see a prospect that young, move like that. Presently will hover around 80 mph, but the radar gun will look much different by the time he graduates high school.

Colton Hartman OF / LHP / Lebanon, OH / 2023

Report: The final uncommitted southpaw that turned heads this winter is Colt Hartman (Lebanon). Fastball showed a jump up to 82 mph and like the other guys on his list he moves very well, showing signs of more in the tank. Also showed feel for two playable secondary offerings that will only get better as velo increases. Hartmann isn’t a guy to sleep on as a position player prospect either. Shows functional athleticism on both sides of the ball with 90 mph exit velocity off the bat from the left side.

On the Cusp

We had over 60 prospects on our “big board” that we were sifting through in order to try to create the top 30. Here are a few who just missed the cut but you can expect to see on this list at some point in their career.

  • Ben Schechterman, LHP, Aurora
Report: Quality stuff with advanced pitchability for class. As he develops physically he has a chance to shoot up this list. Everyone who coaches him loves him.
  • Nicky Sackett, INF, Stow
Report: Comes highly recommended from coaches we trust. Really looks the part on video. Athletic defender with a smooth stroke. You could make the argument he is talented enough to be on this list right now we simply just haven’t seen him enough.
  • Connor Christenson, SS, Moeller
Report: Grinder, gamer type who maybe isn’t the flashiest guy in the world but makes plays and finds barrels. He’s an on base machine that is as sure-handed as they come in the infield. His stock will only rise as he adds physicality.
  • Chase Herrell, RHP/3B, Milford
Report: Super clean delivery with reports of him getting up to the 80-81 mph range. Everything works and expect him to continue to climb velocity wise as physical maturation takes its course. Also has a beautiful swing from the left side.
  • Kaden Kiser, LHP/1B, Hamilton Township
Report: If you want to talk about high ceilings ... this is your guy. Not there yet but he’s 6-foot-4 and projects to be a high power output guy on the mound and at the plate. Once it all comes together he has a chance to be a big time player.
  • Angel Abreu, SS/C, Central Crossing
Report: He’s not the biggest or the fastest dude on the planet but if a scout goes to a game he’s playing they’re going to write his name down. Oozes ball skills on both sides of the ball. Catcher/shortstop who if he gets his hands on it, it’s an out. At the plate he’s an on base machine who squares up everything in BP and game. One of the most productive players in the state whose stock will rise as he adds burst/physicality.
  • Tyler Snyder, UTL, McNicholas
Report: There’s a group of about 4 or 5 bats in the state that are just a bit more explosive than everyone else and Snyder belongs in that group. The combination of physicality and bat speed is through the roof. A guy to keep an eye on as he polishes up as a defender.
