Washington HS Scout Blog (3.12.22)

Dan Jurik & Diego Solares

Switching from Jamboree action the last few days into a more conventional 7 inning format, on Saturday March 12th we headed over to see a loaded showdown between visiting Liberty and host Eastlake

With rosters featuring some high end arms as well as promising bats, this game had everything covered. Notable standouts on the Upperclass and Underclass side, including some highly ranked prospects for their respective classes.

3.12.22 - Liberty & Eastlake

Bryce Johnson, RHP, Eastlake, 2023, Washington commit. One of the top prospects in the state’s junior class. Strong, physical 6-foot-2, 225-pound starter’s frame and profile. Attacked hitters with a fastball up to 90 mph, pitched at 88-89 mph and held it,  with heavy life and late arm-side action at times. Mixed in a sharp mid-70s slider as well that plays well off his fastball to both corners of the plate. Made a case in this look to be viewed as the top prospect in the state’s junior class. Also smoked an oppo-double at the plate and is one of the top bats in the league as well.

Dylan Skolfield, RHP, Eastlake, 2023. Uncommitted name-to-note in Washington’s junior class. Turned in an impressive debut for Eastlake when we saw him on March 12th. Worked with some rhythm downhill, high leg kick to balance point, stacks onto the backside with a clear drop/drive lower half pattern that he repeats. Some deception, arm plays from an over-the-top slot. Fastball came out at 86-88 mph in the first. Landed curveball for strikes at 72-75 mph, 12/6 shape, gradual action with some depth.

Jack Edmunds, C, Eastlake, 2024. Uncommitted. Strong, well-proportioned 6-foot-2, 210-pound frame with physicality attached throughout. Generated hard contact in multiple at-bats during this look. Strong hands/forearms with bat speed. Drove one into the left-center gap and followed it up with a barrel back up the middle. Looks the part of a middle-of-the-order type in the state’s sophomore class.

Grady Woodward, OF, Eastlake, 2024, Washington commit. The top ranked 2024 in the state had a quiet game offensively but the tools and upside are still readily apparent. At 6’2, 180, he has a terrific frame to develop long-term in the OF and the raw power isn’t going anywhere. It’ll be important to circle back and catch Woodward again later on this spring as he continues to get more reps against older competition.

Cole Murawski, INF, 2023, Eastlake. Uncommitted. Showed some physical gains earlier in February at the Pre-season All-State and performed in-game on this look. Defensively fits well at 2B with his quickness and actions. Offensively, keeps it simple at the plate and looks to spray the ball based on where it’s pitched. Lined a hard oppo single in the middle innings. Should be a consistent presence on both sides of the ball for Eastlake this season.

Noah Weintraub, OF, 2022. Uncommitted. Arguably one of the top uncommitted athletes in the 2022 class. Size, strength and speed combo. Handles OF duties with above average range. Line drive approach in the box. Utilizes the middle of the field well. Connected for a hard single on this look and adds quite a bit of firepower to an already potent Eastlake offense.

Terrry Hayes Jr., RHP, Liberty, 2023: Uncommitted. Lanky, wiry 6-foot-3, 175-pound frame with room for physical projection. Represented the Pacific Northwest at the PBR Future Games this past summer. Simple delivery, stays in line to target and finishes with conviction and some effort. Clean arm path finishes from a high ¾ slot. Fastball touched 89 mph in the first, sat 87-88 mph early while flashing arm-side run. Confidently and consistently mixed in both a slider and changeup.

Elias Oster, RHP, Liberty, 2023: Uncommitted. Highly projectable 6-foot-5, 170-pound frame with long, lanky limbs. Showed an uptick in velocity since we last saw him in this short stint. Quick worker on the mound, tall/fall type delivery with a long downhill stride, downward finish through release. Long arm swing on the backside finishes from a high ¾ slot. Fastball played at mostly 85 mph, did reach back for 87 mph multiple times. High-ceiling arm with more velocity to come.

Mac Reynolds, MIF, Liberty, 2024: Uncommitted left-handed hitter. Ranked inside the top-30 prospects in Washington’s sophomore class. Lean 5-foot-10, 150-pound frame that projects. Taller/open setup at the plate, loose athletic hands, loads in rhythm. Showed a mature approach at the plate against advanced arms in this look. Notably, stayed inside the baseball and poked a line drive single with two strikes to drive in a run.

Rohne Klein, INF, Liberty, 2024. Uncommitted. One of the more polished and consistent bats in the ‘24 class. Klein smoked a loud double into the LCF gap early on in the game and also worked in a HBP later on. Played 3B on this look and has the size/arm strength necessary to make tough plays from the left side of the diamond. Looks ready to make big strides offensively this season and consistently produce gap-to-gap power while being disciplined and selective at the plate.

Ethan Rattie, INF/RHP, Liberty. Puget Sound commit. An experienced senior presence who will pitch big innings while balancing INF duties as well. Rattie showed off some offensive presence with an XBH to his oppo gap. Didn’t see any innings on this look but he’ll be filling up the zone with a solid FB/CB/CH combo throughout the spring.

Elliott Oster, OF, Liberty, 2024. Uncommitted. Oster is going to be a name to know in the 2024 class as he gets more reps on the diamond. 6’2 with wiry athleticism. He’s an ultra projectable athlete with speed on defense and twitch in the swing at the plate. Could be primed for a big 2022.

Maddox Lee, C/OF, Liberty, 2022. Uncommitted. Another mature, senior presence that brings consistency to the field and understands how to play the game. Lee put together some QABs while showing well defensively in the OF on this look. Fits the ‘gamer’ type mold.
