The No. 7 Bethesda-Chevy Chase Barons scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat the No. 2 ranked Sherwood Warriors 3-2 on Wednesday afternoon.
In a much anticipated battle of top teams in Montgomery county, Sherwood high school was once again the setting between these two well known rivals. Because this was a tournament hosted by Sherwood, Bethesda was actually the home team following the tournament structure set up prior to.
A well played game throughout, the scoring did not get started until the third inning, when Sherwood got on the board first in the top half of the inning. Luke Cheng hit a one-out double to left field to get into scoring position. Cheng would then advance to third on a smart piece of base running off a shallow fly ball to the bermuda triangle of right field; down the line just too deep over the first baseman's head and shallow for the right fielder charging in. This ball is predominately a play that second basemen have to make, and the B-CC did make a nice running catch that took him away fro the infield and Cheng was able to move to third with two out. That proved to be valuable as a wild pitch would happen during the next at bat and allow Cheng to score to get the Warriors on the board.
B-CC would strike back immediately the next inning. Joe Eisenberg would lead off the frame with a double to deep right field. A sac bunt attempt would then allow Eisenberg to score after the throw to first is dropped and rolled enough away for Eisenberg to sprint to the plate to tie it up.
Sherwood was again score in the top of the fourth, after a Ben Vok triple to left field to start off the inning. After a strikeout, a wild pitch would yet again give the opportunity for the Warriors to add a run.
Both starters, Vok (2019, Frostburg St.) for Sherwood, and James Springer (2019, Fordham) for B-CC, pitched extremely well in the game and their only scratches occured here. Both pitched very well for their respective teams, Allowing minimal base runners and each team had to be opportunistic to get their runs.
The Barons were finally able to threat again in the bottom of the seventh inning. A leadoff walk and hit-by-pitch put runners on first and second with no out. The warriors would then go to the pen to finish it out. The next two hitters were made quick work of and with two out John Hemmer got a big hit to right field to load the bases. Beck Vrofsky, the next hitter would run the count to full with two out. Vrofsky then hit a ground ball that was misplayed and rolled through the infielders legs to shallow outfield, where the Barons were able to get two runs and end the game.
Eisenberg, Hemmer and Jack Branthover led the Baron offense with one hit each. Springer went the distance, allowing four hits, givnig up two runs with six strikeouts and three walks.
Cheng, Joey Bowers, JP Yore, and Vok led the Warrior with a hit apiece. Vok would go six innings on the mound, allowing three hits while striking out seven and walking three. He was charged with three unearned runs.
