2022 Overall Rankings Updated

As the baseball calendar flips from summer to fall, the 2022 Overall Rankings have been updated and there is a new No. 1 for the first time in 18 months. MIF Termarr Johnson (Mays HS, GA) has continued to prove that he’s far and away the best pure hitter in the class--not to mention one of the best to come out of the high school ranks in recent memory. He had an emphatic finish to the summer, going 4-for-7 at the Area Code Games and then 10-for-27 between the Team USA 18U Trials and seven-game friendly series against Canada. Packed with strength in his 5-foot-8, 195-pound frame, Johnson has an innate ability to control at-bats, practically dictating what the pitcher throws, and finding the barrel for loud contact to all fields. To put his offensive potential in perspective, it overshadows and virtually negates questions about his defensive future. He is sure-handed with athletic actions and a strong arm, but his frame and likely future as a second or third baseman are atypical of a potential first prep pick in the MLB Draft. There are 10 more months for the draft landscape to pan out, but for now, Johnson is the man to unseat.

If you’re looking for tools, OF Elijah Green (IMG Academy, FL) is full of them. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Miami recruit is a physical specimen with plus-plus power and plus speed. He comes in at No. 2 after holding the top spot since early 2020. Between the PDP League, Area Code Games, Team USA Trials and series against Canada, more than half of Green’s hits went for extra bases. He was 16-for-59 with six home runs, two triples and a double, though his propensity to swing and miss is a cause for concern, as he struck out 26 times in that span.

RHP Dylan Lesko (Buford HS, GA) comes in at No. 3 and remains the top pitching prospect in the class, though LHP Brandon Barriera (American Heritage Plantation HS, FL) is hot on his heels at No. 4. At No. 5 is OF Druw Jones (Wesleyan HS, GA).

Pitching looks to be the strength of this class with Lesko, Barriera, RHP Andrew Dutkanych (Brebeuf HS, IN), RHP Nazier Mule (PCTI, NJ) and RHP Brock Porter (Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Prep, MI) finding themselves in the top 10. Not to mention, the likes of RHP J.R. Ritchie (Bainbridge Island HS, WA), LHP Tristan Smith (Boiling Springs HS, SC), LHP Jackson Ferris (IMG Academy, FL) and LHP Cade Fisher (Northwest Whitfield HS, GA) warrant high follows as well.

The summer season is an important time for prospects to establish their draft value, or even put themselves on the radar. Several guys did that and it’s reflected in their climb up the rankings. OF Henry Bolte (Palo Alto HS, CA) vaulted himself into the top 20 with his display of power and speed at the Area Code Games. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound Texas recruit oozes athleticism and physical projection. He puts his strength to good use at the plate where his quick hands produce impressive bat speed. His power plays to all fields, as evidenced by his opposite field home run that broke a dorm room window. Bolte’s Area Code teammate, LHP Braeden Sloan (Woodcreek HS, CA), also made a strong impression, striking out eight in four innings over two appearances in San Diego. His fastball sat 89-91 mph and there’s plenty more to come thanks to his 6-foot-4, 185-pound frame and the fact that he was still working his way back from an injury. He didn’t spin a breaking ball consistently, but was able to neutralize right-handed batters with a changeup that projects to be at least above average.

*3B/RHP Cam Collier reclassed from 2023 this summer, going through the summer circuit as a 2022, but he is reportedly no longer at Mount Paran Christian and is working toward attending a junior college this spring, so he is not currently ranked.
