Diamond Sports Showcase - Quick Hits

Dan Jurik
Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

Puyallup, WA - Last week we put together a showcase for players from various travel programs who all work out of the Diamond Sports facility in Puyallup, WA. The group of players ranged from the 2020 all the way to the 2023 class. Overall it was a strong showing that featured some impressive uncommitted upperclassmen plus some youngsters who will be worth keeping an eye on as they develop.

Here were our takeaways...

2020 grads

Two uncommitted seniors were in attendance for the workout, ‘20 OF Peter Losh (Gig Harbor) and ‘20 3B Todd McGann (Kentwood). Losh has a long, wiry frame at 6-foot-2, 175 pounds. Hits from a wide, balanced stance and shows some quickness in his barrel. Easy, rangy type of strides in the OF with a high ¾ release. McGann has a proportional frame at 5-foot-9, 162 pounds. Sets-up with feet square to pitcher in the box. Gathers on backside with low leg lift. Utilizes lower half to get barrel on plane with the ball. Defensively has sound, simple footwork to get around the ball and funnel in the center of his stance. Easy, quick exchange with a low release point.

2021 grads

Arguably the loudest performance from the ‘21 class came from 2-way prospect ‘21 OF/LHP Cameron Hoiland (Kentridge). The combination of size, strength and projectable baseball actions give him the chance to impact the game in a lot of ways. ‘21 C Kyle Sunich (Graham Kapowsin) showed well in BP with a quick, level swing (88 exit velocity) and popped a 2.09 on his best time down to 2nd base. Strong framed at 5-foot-10, 175 pounds. ‘21 C Zachary Langdon (Orting) showed a big jump in exit velo from when we first saw him at our Pac NW ID in June. Also continues to show quickness out of his crouch from behind the plate when exchanging into throws down to 2nd. One of the bigger, more physical backstops we’ve seen so far, ‘21 C Chase Higgins (Bethel) showed a slow, controlled coil on his backside before getting into an aggressive, powerful swing. Big time lift with an uphill path thru contact at the plate. Throws with short, bent arm action and high ¾ release. ‘21 3B Kyle Tran (Federal Way) also showed off some power (92 exit velocity) at the plate. Uses a wide set-up. Hands start just above back shoulder before lowering as he gets into short forward stride. Stays strong at point of contact. Active feet on defense at 3B with a long, full arm path on his throwing motion. Defensively,  ‘21 INF Daniel Goon (Decatur) showed some of the best footwork and actions we saw. Moves laterally with a quick first step & maintains body control in everything he does. At the plate, his hands are noticeably quick to the ball and there’s some deceiving power in the bat. ‘21 3B/RHP Michael Doyle (Wilson) hit with a simple, contact approach in the box. Showing the ability to stay in the middle of the field. Has control for all of his offerings on the mound and kept his FB/CB/CH arsenal around the zone throughout his bullpen. ‘21 C Ethan Hastings (Tahoma) has relaxed set-up in the box with a slow & deliberate load. Hands show strength at point of contact and he maintains a quiet head throughout. Behind the dish he works below the baseball with a compact target and a high exchange getting into his throwing motion. Throws showed consistent, true carry. Lastly ‘21 INF/RHP Levi Gates (Adna) impressed with his bat (91 exit velocity) and also ran his FB up to 85 on the bump. 5-foot-11, 180 pounds with strength in his frame. Gates attacks the game with an aggressive approach on all sides of the ball.

2022 grads

‘22 OF/RHP R’Mani Adams (Decatur) comes in at 6-foot-3, 185 pounds with long levers & tremendous leverage in his frame. Expect all of his key measurables: 87 exit velocity, 81 OF arm, 80 max FB to improve in the near future as he physically matures. ‘22 INF Rory Crowder (Decatur) set the high mark on the day with a 94 exit velocity. Strong, durable frame. Stays in his legs with top hand extension thru the ball after contact. Profiles to corner INF. ‘22 OF/RHP Brennan Carbonell (Home School) is a wiry athlete with a polished swing from the left side. Puts a simple move on the ball with a clean, high finish. Showcased in the OF and on the mound. Pitches with a high takeaway and fully extended arm after hand break. Clean arm action thru release. We’ve had multiple looks at ‘22 1B/LHP Connor Enebrad (Anne Wright/Stadium) since we got started with events last summer. Developing frame at 6-foot, 150 pounds. Hits from a relaxed stance at the plate and lets the barrel work easily. Pitches from a ¾ slot with a FB/CB/CH combination. Given his baseball actions, adding strength down the road will likely help boost all of his measurables. ‘22 C Tristan Gudge (Bonney Lake) bring some physicality to the table at 6-foot-1, 180. Stays tall in the box with lift in his swing path. Keeps hips low while receiving and allows his glove hand to work up to the ball. ‘22 OF Ian Hiatt (Black Hills) uses a balanced leg kick in the box that syncs up with his hand load to help create a flat, level swing. Front leg stays firm thru contact. Quick, active feet in the OF. Keeps momentum behind the ball while throwing from a high, over the top release. ‘22 INF/RHP Elijah Higginbottom (Sumner) has bat speed and strength in his swing to go with his 6-foot-1, 175 pound frame. Plenty of arm strength to get the ball across the diamond plus has control of a reliable glove hand. On the mound, topped at 83 from a ¾ release with a continuous arm path. Quick, wiry athlete ‘22 Jax Mooney (Sumner) showed off some defensive versatility by working out at both INF & OF. Mechanically sound footwork at both positions with the ability to manipulate throwing slot as needed. Offensively, hits from an upright stance while keeping the barrel inside of the ball. Best contact was to his pull-side gap. ‘22 INF Anthony Myers (Federal Way) plays with steady tempo and an overall feel for the game. Keeps body control while fielding with a clean transition into throws. At the plate, goes from a narrow, open stance to a wider more athletic base. Gap-to-gap type of life in swing plane. Also showed FB/CB combo on the bump with some hand speed on front at release and ¾ release point. ‘22 INF Nate Newsom (O’Dea) took one of the more consistent rounds of BP on the day. Showing consistent timing and tempo in the box, sprayed lien drive contact all over the field with a quick, handsy type of swing. Plays with quickness on defense with short, direct footwork. Exchanges ball quickly into high release with compact arm action. ‘22 C Brock Penney (Graham Kapowsin) has a durable frame with a strong lower half. Put up 88 exit velocity, showing some bat speed and the ability to keep the barrel behind the ball. Defensively his throws stayed on the bag, showing true carry out of hand. High ¾ release with the ability to get rid of the ball from his knees. One of the more projectable prospects at the workout, ‘22 SS Zak Ufford (Hazen) has height and a frame that can handle substantially move weight without impeding his actions. Showed the ability to find barrel during BP & flashed lift to his pull-side gap. Defensively he’ll have to work hard to stay low because of his height, but he has coordination in his actions & a loose, whippy arm. ‘22 OF/RHP Trevi Vo (Federal Way) sets up with front side slightly turned in & a closed off stance. Lowers hands to just below shoulder line as he takes forward stride to initiate swing. Simple, contact approach in the box. Moves well in the OF with a long, fluid arm path. On the mound he has natural feel for commanding the baseball, especially with his breaking ball. Which features tight bend and depth thru the zone. Lastly, ‘22 INF Chase Deitz (White River) emerged as one of the top uncommitted names to know in the 2022 class. 5-foot-11, 170 pounds with some present strength to his frame and a proportional build. Deitz has natural baseball actions on defense and a quick, connected swing at the plate. Does an exceptional job of keeping his hands tight and letting barrel stay behind the baseball.

2023 grads

‘23 OF/LHP Jacob Bresnahan (Sumner) did a little bit of everything over the course of the workout. Showed well in the OF with fundamentally sound actions. Has the footwork to handle 1B as well. At the plate, showed consistent tempo & rhythm in his swing with a fluid barrel path. On the mound, arm action has a full path with clean mechanics. ‘23 1B/LHP David Pardey Jr. (Kentlake) had an impressive round of BP. Consistent line-drive contact with repeatable feel for the barrel. Stays short & quick to the ball. Handled all the plays at 1B on defense. On the mound, pitched with simple mechanics and a long, clean arm path. Showed quality command of his 3-pitch mix. ‘23 3B/RHP Joey Kosko (Sumner) has the chance to really develop further as he fills out his 6-foot-3, 165 pound frame. Handled 3B/SS defensively but remains to be seen where he ends up long-term. Plenty of carry on his throws across the diamond. Generates bat speed with easy effort, projects well for future power. Barrel whips thru the zone with a high finish after contact. Stays tall on the mound with slight hesitation in delivery. Aggressive finish on all of his offerings. Intriguing 2-way prospect. ‘23 C Christopher Hastings (Tahoma) does a job job creating leverage at the plate by hitting against a firm front side with uphill finish. Ball showed some lift off the barrel in BP. Defensively has a soft glove hand when receiving with short, over the top release on his throws down to 2nd.
