Scouting Report (8.9.18)
8/9/18 - 6-foot-4, 185-pound right-handed pitcher, long frame, projects. Delivery stays upright and slightly across his body, creates some deception, little effort. Arm strength present, loose arm action, high ¾ slot. Fastball showed late action, gets swing and miss, touched 90 mph, sitting 85-88 mph. Slider works 74-77 mph, 10/4 shape. Flashed changeup at 76 mph.
What Did We See?
In the matter of six months, Phelps saw his top fastball velocity climb from 83 mph to 90 mph. This past August, at the PBR All-State Games, the long and lean right-hander sat 85-88 mph and touched 90. Phelps arm works long and loose with seemingly much more in the tank as he fills out his projectable frame. Phelps, who now sits No. 36 in the class, also went from throwing a soft curveball back in February to a slider at 74-77 mph in August. Phelps' stock will only continue to rise as he refines his off-speed offerings.
