McHenry Preseason I.D: Preview

By Drew Locascio
Illinois Scouting Director

This Sunday, Jan. 26, the PBR Illinois team will host its third showcase of the new year, the McHenry Preseason I.D., at Pro Player Academy in McHenry, Ill. For the past four years, this event has provided our staff with an opportunity to evaluate high school-aged prospects from Northern Illinois, primarily. The McHenry event has historically revealed to us some of the area’s top talent.

This year should be more of the same. There are over 100 prospects slated to join us already for this weekend’s event, and there’s still time to register, too.

Taking a look back at last year’s roster, 23 players have made a commitment to play at the next level. Some of the higher profile names included RHP Jack Wenninger (Cary-Grove; Murray State commit), C Drew Stengren (Cary-Grove; Central Michigan commit), RHP Jared Novak (Benet; Bradley commit) OF Nicholas Gregory (Dundee Crown; Parkland JC), among a number of others.

Looking at this year's roster, there should be just as much talent on hand, if not more. One of the top uncommitted prospects in attendance looks to be LHP Ryan Weaver (Cary-Grove, 2021). Weaver is a pitchability left-hander with a clean arm, presence on the mound, low-to-mid-80’s fastball and advanced changeup.

Two of the more noteworthy 2021 position players should be C Kyle Hayes (St. Charles East) and OF Joshua Notriano (Johnsburg). Hayes is a physical backstop with a strong arm and advanced bat strength from the right side. Notriano consistently finds barrels and has present pull-side power from the left side of the plate.

There are also a host of high-level 2023’s to keep an eye on, INF J.R. Nelson (Stevenson), C Cooper Cohn (McHenry), OF Brayden Bakes (Huntley), C Ryan Bakes (Huntley), RHP Andrew Ressler (Huntley) among others.

Cooper Cohn (7.31.19)

There are bound to be a number of other prospects set to emerge at the event.
