Game Recaps from Day 1 of Tournament 12

Futures Navy vs. Atlantic Maroon

Atlantic Maroon was the home team in this one giving the Futures team a chance to start the scoring in the top of the first. After walking Rhys Cratty in the two hole, he proceeded to steal second base and score the game's first run on a Michael Strovman RBI double. Strovman then scored on a two out RBI single over the shortstop's head by Jameson Hart who went on to have three hits in this contest. Turns out that’s all the Futures needed to win this ball game which ended in a 7-1 final.

Atlantic Maroon’s starting pitcher Kyle Pinksen had some control issues in his four innings of work, walking five and hitting one batter, striking out 2 and inducing a triple play to get out of a two on none out start to the fourth.

Noah Naylor showed his pop and bat speed with an RBI double down left-field in the 6th, turning on an inside 3-2 fastball. The 2018 grad was one of the premier players on scout day with his bat and ability behind the plate and shortstop.

Futures Navy threw 4 different arms in this one. Starting pitcher Jack DeCooman went two innings, giving up the lone run in the first inning with a leadoff walk and an RBI single to Nathan Livingston. Ben Abram, Jake English and Harley Gollert held Team Atlantic scoreless the rest of the way pitching a combined five innings of three hit ball, striking out 10 and walking one.

Ontario Black vs. Alberta Red

Starting the game for Ontario Black was uncommitted 2016 grad Nick Iverson. Iverson went three innings, giving up two earned runs on three hits, walking four and striking out five. Iverson showed feel for his breaking ball and had a lot of swing and misses. Jordan Balazovic came out of the pen in the fourth and went four strong, striking out seven Alberta Red players, surrendering two hits and walking one. Balazovic induced a lot of weak contact and commanded the bottom off the zone with his fastball.

Alberta Red starter Nikolas Cardinal held Ontario Black to just three hits in his 3 ⅔ innings pitched, walking four and striking out five. Andrew Yerzy was first to strike with a one out RBI single up the middle which scored leadoff hitter Lucas Parente after he singled and stole second to leadoff the game. That was all they mustered off Cardinal until the fourth inning when Ryan Kula touched him up with an opposite field RBI triple in the left-center gap to knot the game at 2-2 which is how it stayed.

With 1-1 counts, there is a good chance that pitchers will keep up the domination over the week’s play.
