Jack Quimby’s complete game four-hitter led the Gonzaga Eagles to a 3-1 victory over the West Potomac Wolverines on Monday in a non-conference matchup.

The Eagles were able to get on the board in the first inning against West Po’s talented starting pitcher 2019 Jimmy Curley (High Point) when Will Carr was able to leg out an infield single as the second hitter of the inning. Carr would then steal second and third before the next at bat was over and get into scoring position. Carr later scored on a wild pitch to get the Eagles the early 1-0 lead.

Gonzaga would strike again in the bottom of the third inning as leadoff hitter Garrett Newsome (William & Mary) hit a towering solo homerun to left field to take a 2-0 lead.

The Eagles were able to add an insurance run in the sixth after Christian Ficca led off with a single to right and would later score after a run down during a first a third stolen base attempt.

West Potomac was able to scratch a run in the top of the seventh, but left the tying run at first base as the game ended.

Quimby was the star of the game for Gonzaga, pitching effectively attacking the strikezone and keeping the West Potomac lineup off balance for most of the game. Quimby had a no hitter going into the fifth inning then gave up three hits in the seventh before shutting the door on the Wolverines. Quimby struck out five in the contest and most impressively only did it in 62 pitches, throwing close to 80% strikes. Newsome, Carr, and Ficca had the Eagles lone three hits on the day.

Curley took the loss for the Wolverines in their opening game of the season. He went four innings giving up two hits, two runs, and struck out eight. Albert Pallasch pitched two effective innings of relief for the Wolverines, striking out four. Eli Owens, Justin Bassett, Curley, and Henry Dean had the Wolverine hits on the day.
