Seattle Elite Scout Day - Quick Hits from 2/15 (Pt. 2)

Dan Jurik
Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

Puyallup, WA - Our 2nd session of Scout Day events for members of the Seattle Elite and Seattle Premier League was another successful event for several uncommitted players across varying graduating years.

Pre-season events allow players to build their profile with up-to-date information before the spring season begins as well as improve upon past performances. This first installment of Quick Hits from our event on Feb. 15th looked at the Upperclassmen who were in attendance. Now we shift focus to the Underclassman who were in attendance.

Defensively feet keep momentum going throughout field process with short, quick steps. Receives with a soft glove hand & showed clean exchange into throwing motion. 2-way prospect SS/RHP Gavin Bailey (Sumner) uses a wide, square stance with bend in his lower half and an upright core. Slight leg kick to go with subtle hand load. Lower hand position gives his barrel an early flat path into the zone. Light on his feet at SS with some bounce in his lateral movements. Works thru the ball with consistent tempo before funneling into low ¾ release point on his throws. On the mound, shows balance/body control with high leg kick as he gathers on backside. Lands with direction towards target. Full, continuous arm path with high ¾ release. Quick hand speed out front. Ball has some life out of hand. Creates tight spin on his breaking ball. OF/RHP Steele Baker (Skyline) showed quality baseball actions throughout the day. At the plate, uses a short leg lift as he hovers with his weight shifted back. Lead arm stays short/bent as he gets into landing, allowing him to generate some quick barrel action into the zone. Balanced, compact swing produced consistent line-drive contact. Moves well in the OF. Comes thru the ball aggressively once he establishes his line of direction. Arm path stays short with loose, whippy finish thru release. Clean arm action translates well to the mound, where he works from a high ¾ slot with an athletic, sound delivery. Throws with consistent intent on all of his offerings. Creates noticeable separation between hips/shoulders to help generate velocity. OF Delano Calimlim (North Creek) showed an easy, rhythmic swing in the box with impressive bat speed. Registered 88 mph exit velo off the tee. Athletic hand load to initiate swing. Head stays down with extension thru the ball after contact. Strong frame for the OF at 6-foot, 215 pounds. Takes short strides when working to the ball. Fields out in front of his glove-side leg. High, over the top release produces consistent ball flight on his throws (video below).

2B/SS Luke Chang (Break Creek School) showed off a smooth, steady-paced load at the plate while using a controlled move with his hands. Rocks his weight back to create momentum into landing and generate bat speed. High finish thru contact. Shows choppy, active feet at SS in his set-up. Maintains a wide stance as he receives ball with glove hand. Short, quick arm action after exchange. Has a repeatable, low effort delivery on the mound. Glove side gets fully extended towards catcher as he gets down the slope. Clean, continuous arm action with high ¾ release. Keeps hands tight with bend in both elbows as he begins swing, allowing barrel to stay inside of the ball. Best contact in BP was to middle/oppo. Does a solid job working to get behind the ball in OF before coming thru with a quick, aggressive throwing motion. The arm speed plays well on the mound, as he ran his FB up to 82 and sat 77-81. Uses a cross action delivery with a low ¾ slot. Continuous arm path with exceptional hand speed out front at release. Intriguing arm talent to keep an eye on, especially as the pitching skills get more seasoning. C Breckin Hadley (Bainbridge) has a wiry-strong frame with a proportional build. Stays tall/upright in the box with a flat barrel as he gets into short forward stride. Keeps hands near back shoulder in relaxed position. Barrel shows ability to cover a lot of zone & spray line-drive contact to his oppo-gap. Fluid, one-handed finish after contact. Behind the dish, keeps a relaxed glove hand while receiving. Feet begin slightly staggered in crouched position. Tight, compact arm action with extension thru his release. Ball flight stayed true down to the bag. C/RHP Michael Hall (Redmond) maintains his tall, narrow stance in the box while creating some momentum with a short forward stride. Holds a consistent vertical bat angle as he loads prior to working quick/direct to the ball. Defensively, hips sit parallel with his knees while he keeps chest upright. Controls glove hand well as he receives with minimal extra movement. Full arm path as he gets out of crouch and throws ball down to 2B. Worked exclusively out of the stretch on the mound while setting up on the far 1B side of the rubber. Controlled leg lift to just above waist high before getting into stride. Separates down his center line with a fully extended arm swing after hand break. Consistent direction with his stride towards target. High ¾ release point. 3B Andrew Kubik (Mount Rainier) sets up in a balanced, athletic stance with relaxed actions. Showed a quick, fluid barrel into the zone that produced consistent hard contact. 87 mph exit velocity off the tee. Moves well at the hot corner with quick, active footwork. Keeps core over the ball while fielding while. Operates at a controlled speed. Stays short with his throwing motion despite some length in his upper-half. Stays behind the ball thru ¾ release. 2-way prospect OF/LHP Jaden Newsom (Kentlake) flashed a low effort, repeatable swing throughout BP. Keeps hands tight to body, allowing him to stay connected with his barrel and keep everything inside of the ball. 2-handed finish thru contact. Gap-to-gap power type of swing. Uses his quickness/agility to get to the ball in the OF. Short, quicker strides that keep him centered & under control. Shorter arm action with ¾ release. Athletic delivery on the mound with a consistent 3-pitch mix. Coils into back hip at leg lift to create more torque in his motion. Arm stays bent after hand break with minimal swing. High ¾ release with intent at finish. Second time we’ve had eyes on OF Rutger Youch (Hazen) at a showcase. Physically built OF’er with intriguing size/strength/speed combination. Stays bent in his lower half with his set-up with a minimal forward move on the ball. Flashes his best contact middle/oppo. Holds his posture/balance thru his finish. Long, powerful strides in the OF. Capable of covering some ground quickly. Long, full arm path with a high ¾ release. Ball flight has accurate carry. Uses a side-shuffle to get momentum behind his throws.

2023

1B/RHP Alex Chamberlain (Mt. Si) one of the more physical ‘23 grads we’ve had the chance to get eyes on so far. Chamberlain took an advanced round of BP while showing off impressive bat speed. Barrel path projects well for future power down the road & his hitting actions show consistent tempo/rhythm. Defensively he has the footwork and arm strength to handle 1B without any issues. Uses a timing hop in his pre-pitch set up to stay agile and react to the ball off the bat. On the mound he flashed a simple approach, working exclusively out of the stretch. High leg lift into a shorter stride length that allows him to keep his weight centered. Long, full arm path into high ¾ release. Stays tall & finishes with leverage/downward angle on his offerings.

INF/RHP Gavin Yost (Mt Si) has a strong, lean frame at 5-foot-9, 150 pounds. Has a wide, balanced stance with feet square to the pitcher. Takes a brief, quick hover on his backfoot before getting into landing. Sight hip hinge in his posture to get barrel on plane with the ball. Showed a knack for finding the barrel throughout BP. Defensive actions profile well to the INF. Works quick to the ball but doesn’t rush or get out of control. Glove hand stays soft/quiet as he funnels ball in. Loose, whippy arm action with the ability to manipulate slot/release point. Pitched from the stretch using a tall, balanced delivery. Slight shoulder tilt at hand break. Drives lead hip forward prior to beginning stride. Arm action is fluid & continuous with some speed thru release. Switch hitting 2-way prospect with feel for the game, INF/RHP Lathan Haywood (Olympic) did a little bit of everything at the workout. Shows simple actions in the box from both sides of the plate. Staying balanced and letting barrel work easily thru the zone. As with most switch hitters, LH swing shows a bit more lift and power potential. Fields the ball with a deliberate tempo throughout. Keeping head behind the ball while getting glove hand centered as he receives. Short arm action with some looseness throughout. Able to adjust arm arm slot when needed. On the mound, flashed a 3-pitch mix while working from the stretch position. Hands come set high as he gets to leg lift. Direct stride towards his target with no wasted movement in delivery. Full takeaway after hand break with a fluid arm path into high ¾ release.

2024

INF Rohne Kline (Liberty)showed off impressive bat-to-ball skills during BP. Hitting from a crouched, athletic stance, Kline keeps some flexion in his lead arm and that allows him to have a tight shoulder rotation as he begins his swing. Features a classic, LH uphill finish & holds his balance thru contact. Defensively, stays low throughout and lets his glove-hand work down & behind the ball. Arm stays short/bent and helps him exchange into throws quickly. C/RHP Luke Klooster (O’Dea) left a strong impression after he finished his rounds of BP. The youngster has an advanced feel for the barrel to go with present strength & bat speed. Short, compact swing. Hits against a firm front side & keeps head down thru contact. Stays in his legs while getting to high, one-handed finish. Behind the plate, the athleticism allows him to get out of his crouch quickly while using a high exchange to get into his throwing motion. Popped a 2.08 on his best throw. Continued to show off his promising skill set when he jumped on the mound and controlled a developing 3-pitch arsenal. Quick tempo to delivery & a noticeable feel for staying behind the baseball. Peaked at 77 mph with his FB and already spins a sharp CB with tight bend. High follow in the emerging ‘24 class.

3B/RHP Dylan Peay (Eastside Catholic) has the chance to add significant strength to his 6-foot-1, 200 pound frame. Has some bend/crouch in his stance at the plate as he begins his leg lift. Lands in a stacked position and allows the hands to work with an easy, relaxed swing. Strong lower half keeps him centered after contact. Likely to grow into more power down the road. Defensively he has some feel for his glove hand and shows the footwork needed to get around the ball. Stays low with slight bend at waist throughout. Full arm path in throwing motion with ¾ release. On the mound, keeps everything simple & under control. Creates downward angle on his offerings with a high ¾ release and short stride length. Clean arm action. Holds consistent alignment with his target and does a solid job of bracing his momentum down the slope with his front leg.
