The 2023 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Tennessee.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Murfreesboro at The Spring Fling as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Tennessee. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Volunteer State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each TSSAA classification as well as a Power 25.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook:

The Hornets put together a strong season last year going 28-13 while earning a bid to the 3A state tournament. They went 2-2 at the Spring Fling, dropping both games to eventual champion Upperman in bracket play. Heading into 2023, they will return a trio of experienced arms and middle of the order bats. ‘23 RHP/INF Jack Brafa (TN Tech Commit) is the headliner, who was limited on the mound last year, but played a crucial role with his stick. He’s healthy again and will be the team’s ace this Spring. Behind him will be ‘25 RHP/OF Jack Bradberry and ‘25 3B/RHP Gage Nesbitt, who both were contributors on the mound as freshmen. ‘23 RHP Camden Lockett is back after leading the team in appearances last year. ‘24 C Rylee Austin is back behind the plate after catching a majority of the games last year. ‘24 SS/RHP Levi Bryant returns in the leadoff spot and anchors the defense up the middle. ‘23 OF Hugo Green is another veteran three year starter, who will provide speed offensively and defensively. ‘23 OF/RHP James Cloyd lead the team in batting average last year and will be the top lefty bat in the lineup. They’ll have some younger talented prospects that will look to step into bigger roles, who will have to pick up some experience throughout the regular season. Nonetheless, SGC will be the favorites in the district and will look to make another deep postseason push this Spring.
