The Virginia/DC Underclass Preview was held on Saturday, February 18th at Virginia Sports Complex in Ruther Glen, VA. 40 athletes from across the state were in attendance and performed in front of the PBR scouting staff. We began the evaluations process with our Stats Story and Rapid Reaction. Today our player analysis from the event turns to the pitcher analysis.

Top Performers

Hunter Hoopes RHP/OF W.T. Woodson 2018 
Hoopes is 6-1 with a lanky frame, throws from a low three-quarters arm slot with a drop and drive delivery. Long, quick arm action with normal effort. Shoulders are level and closed, lands closed and finishes with a slight fall off. Fastball was 81-84 with some late run. Curveball had sharp 11/5 break and was 62-64 with some armspeed. Change-up had some armspeed and fade to it, running 72-75.

Logan Ransom LHP Steward 2019 
Ransom is 5-10 and has an athletic frame with a strong lower half. Drop and drive delivery, throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short, quick arm action and some effort. Shoulders are closed and uphill, lands closed with an occaisional fall off finish. Fastball was 81-83 with late sink. Change-up was 73-77 with good armspeed and some sink to it. Curveball had late sharp 2/8 break with good armspeed, running 68-72. Showed good feel for the strikezone with all three pitches.

James Steele LHP York 2018
Steele is 6-0 and has an athletic frame with a strong lower half. Throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action and some effort. Shoulders are uphill and closed, strides on line to a slightly open landing, athletic finish. Fastball was 81-83 with late run. Good curveball with late sharp 12/6 break and good armspeed, running 72-75. Change-up had good armspeed with armside run, running 74-78, pitch was very good at the bottom end of the range.

Canon Davies RHP Orange County 2019
Davies is 5-10 with an athletic frame. Throws from low three-quarters arm slot long, quick arm action and produces velocity with some effort. Shoulders uphill and on line, lands open with athletic finish. Fastball sat 72-74, touching 75 with late sink. Curveball was 52-56 with gradual 11/5 break. Slider was 64-68 with late 11/5 break. Change-up was 65-67 with sink.

Aaron Leathers RHP/SS Covenant 2018
Leathers is 6-0 tall and has a lankier athletic frame, throwing from a low three-quarters arm slot with a drop and drive delivery. Short, quick arm action and some effort to delivery. Shoulders are uphill and on line, landing is square with athletic finish. Fastball had heavy arm side run, sitting 77-80. Curveball had sharp 10/4 break, running 64-69 with some armspeed. Change-up had good armspeed and fading action, running 75-76.

Ryan Mason RHP/2B Chincoteague 2018
Mason is 5-10 with a strong lower half. Throws from a three-quarters arm slot from a short arm action with some effort. Shoulders level and closed, lands slightly closed and falls off at finish. Fastball was 80-82, touching 83 with late heavy sink. Curveball was 70-74 with gradual 11/5 break and good armspeed. Change-up was 76-77 with a bit of fade and good arm action.

Carson McCusker LHP/OF Fauquier 2019
McCusker is 6-0 with a lanky frame, throws with a drop and drive delivery from a low three-quarters arm slot. Shorter, free arm action that is quick, normal effort to delivery. Shoulders are uphill and slightly closed, closed landing with an athletic finish. Fastball was 75-77 with late sink and some run. Change-up was 70-73 with some armspeed and run to it. Curveball had 1/7 break and was 63-65 with some armspeed. Showed the ability to throws strikes with all three pitches.

Jay Nesson SS/RHP George Mason 2019
Nesson is 5-11 with a lanky frame, throws from a low three-quarters arm slot, long free arm action with normal effort. Shoulders level and closed, strides to a square landing with a fall off finish. Fastball was 74-75, touching 76 with late sink. Slider had sharp 10/4 action and some armspeed, running 65-67. Curveball had sharper 11/5 action and was 63-66. Change-up had good armspeed and sink, running 71-72.

James Saunders RHP/SS Patriot 2018
Saunders is 5-5 and has an athletic frame, he throws from a three-quarters arm slot with normal effort. Shoulders are level and closed, lands slightly open with a complete finish and recoil. Fastball had late run and was 71-74. Curveball had sharp 11/5 action and good armspeed, running 62-65. Change-up had good armspeed and sink, running 67-71.
