Unsigned Senior Showcase: Player Analysis





On February 13th, we hosted the winter Unsigned Senior Showcase at Indiana Wesleyan University.  Below we analyze the players in attendance. 

In alphabetical order

Patrick Arndt, C, Chesterton HS

A 6-foot,  200 pound C/1B showcased a balanced setup and small hand load.  Includes a leg kick during load while getting some usage out of backside.  Exit velo registered at 81mph.  Produced line drives with a level bat path.  Defensively, pop times ranged between 2.02-2.1.  Tendency to reach on transfer but above average arm speed.  Showcased the ability to block pitches in the dirt.  Needs to improve on his flexibility.  Sets up well, average receiving skills.  

Canaan Baum, OF, Columbus North HS

A 5-foot-10,  170 pound OF showcased an athletic, open setup at the plate.  Bat path is level with extension.  Bat speed is fast.  Produced line drives with some pop.  In the OF, Canaan has a loose arm and quick feet.  Exchange is fluid and clean.  Throws had carry at 85 mph.  

Tony Bottone, LHP, Bishop Luers HS

A 6-foot-1,  155 pound LHP showcased a smooth delivery with good direction.  Arm action is long with good balance.  Fastball topped at 79 with late run.  Change-up has good depth and arm-side run.  Breaking ball has 1/7 shape and is thrown near arm speed.  All pitches are thrown for strikes and deception.

Dewey Cardwell, 2B, Charlestown HS

A 5-foot-10,  160 pound 2B/OF showcased a balanced setup with a short stride and average bat speed.  Bat path is level and short to the ball.  Exit velocity was 79mph.  Defensively, Dewey showcased a long arm action with ¾ slot.  Throws had some accuracy at 66mph across the INF.   He ran a 7.45 60.

Nicholas Cecala, C, Maine South HS (IL)

A 5-foot-11,  180 pound C/OF ran a 7.19 60 yd dash.  Behind the plate, he registered pop times ranging between 2.04-2.11.  He has quick feet with an average transfer and short arm action.  Throws topped at 72mph.  Good stance behind the dish with soft hands.  Receives well and shows some athleticism.  Offensively, he has a balanced setup with a short stride.  Produced line drives with average bat speed.  Exit velocity registered at 84mph.

Jordan Dickinson, 1B, Northrop HS

A 6-foot-1,  210 pound 1B showcased an open setup with slight leg kick.  Lower half was explosive.  Tendency to get unbalanced but possesses some pull side pop.  Produced a showcase high of 89 on exit velocity.  Defensively, hands were above average with fluid footwork.   Arm action is short and throws were accurate.  Jordan ran a 7.5 60yd dash.

Mitchell Hahn, LHP/OF, Delta HS

A 6-foot-6,  185 pound LHP/OF is projectable with his body and arm action.   On the mound, he has a smooth delivery with average arm speed.  Maintains good direction and finish.  Fastball topped at 83mph while sitting 82-83.  Breaking ball has 2/8 shape with gradual break.  Change-up has slight fade and thrown for strikes at 72/76mph.  The RHH has a short stride with above average bat speed.  Bat path is level but tends to get in/out.  Produced an exit velocity of 88mph.  He also ran a 6.89 60yd dash.

Garrett Keener, RHP, Churubusco HS

A 6-foot-1,  194 pound RHP showcased a high ¾ arm slot with a drop and drive delivery.  Arm speed is average while staying in good direction.  Fastball topped at 74, while sitting 70-72.  Breaking ball has 10/4 shape and was thrown at 61-64mph.  Change-up had slight fade and arm side run while thrown for strikes.  

Jakob Layton, RHP, Lafayette Harrison HS

A 5-foot-9,  175 pound RHP showcased two arm slots.  His overtop arm action provided straight FBs thrown for strikes.  The sidearm action produced slight run and was also thrown for strikes.  FB ranged between 73-78mph.  The change-up had good depth and arm-side run from a sidearm slot at 69-70mph.  Breaking ball is average with 10/4 action and thrown for strikes.  Delivery has some rhythm and average usage of lower half.  

Jay Lorenz, OF, Providence HS

A 5-foot-10,  165 pound OF showcased good actions defensively.  Arm action is loose and throws were accurate.  Hands were average.  Footwork is clean and quick.  Plays thru the ball well.  At the plate, he has an open setup with a leg kick.  Good bat path.  Produced line drives with fluid rhythm.  Exit velocity registered at 81mph.

Alec Mark, RHP/OF, Elkhart HS

A 6-foot-3,  220 pound LHH produced an exit velocity of 80mph.  He has a balanced setup with a small leg kick.  Bat path is long but possesses some pull side pop.  Bat speed is above average.   Mark ran a 7.47 60yd dash. 

Travis Mason, OF, Mt. Vernon HS

A 5-foot-10,  165 pound OF ran a showcase best 6.69 60yd dash.  Defensively, Mason has a loose arm action with some carry to throws at 83 mph.  Hands were average with a long exchange.  At the plate, Mason possesses a good backside and above average bat speed.  Has a tendency to get in/out of the hitting zone.  Produced line drives pull side. Recorded a high exit velocity of 78. 

Zach Ramirez, LHP, Charlestown HS

A 6-foot-2 , 165 LHP showcased a ¾ arm slot with average arm speed.  Delivery has some rhythm and good direction.  Fastball has slight run.  Change-up showed good depth and cut action.  Breaking ball has a sweeping 2/8 action.  Fastball topped at 74.

Sergio Rios, MIF, Central Catholic HS

A 5-foot-7, 155 pound infielder has solid actions defensively including soft hands and a quick exchange.  Plays through the ball well.  Arm action is short with a ¾ arm slot.  Throws topped at 78mph.  Offensively, he has a balanced setup and short stride.  Bat speed is above average with good path to the ball.  Exit velo registered at 75.  Produced line drives during BP.  More of a contact guy.  Ran a 7.28-60. 

Will Rose, 3B/RHP, Hauser HS

A 5-foot-8,  200 pound INF showcased a short arm action with some rhythm on the mound.  Delivery stays in line with some balance.  Fastball topped at 74mph. Change-up had slight fade and was thrown for strikes.  Breaking ball had 11/5 shape with early break and was throw for strikes as well.  At the plate, he produced line drives with a short bat path.  He produced an exit velocity of 79mph.  Defensively, Will has average hands and a clean exchange.  Throws topped at 74mph.

Alex Scribner, C, Lapel HS

A 5-foot-8,  170 pound C/2B showcased pop times ranging between 2.26-2.37.  Arm speed is average with a long transfer. Possesses firm hands when receiving. At times ball drags.  Good stance with flexibility.  Blocks well.   Offensively, he possesses a balanced setup and long stride.  Bat speed is average with level bat path.  Produced line drives and had an exit velocity 84mph.  

Jaxon Shirley, 3B, Lapel HS

Shirley, who's coming off Tommy John surgery from this past summer, is one of the more projectable players still on the board in Indiana's 2016 class.  He possesses a strong, athletic build at 6-foot-4, 190 pounds. He recently ran a 6.95-second 60 and displayed clean actions with soft hands and fluid feet on defense. He showcased enough arm strength to suggest his arm will be near full strength in the coming months. He was up to 86 mph before the surgery. He hits out of an open set-up with a wide base and uses a leg kick. He possesses good rhythm and bat speed with the ability to lift the baseball. His physical profile suggests he will continue to add strength and quickness. 

Jared Shoen, RHP, Hauser HS

A 6-foot-2,  230 pound RHP showcased a high ¾ arm slot with a drop and drive delivery.  Delivery has some effort and a tendency to rush.  Fastball topped at 82 while sitting 78-80.  Breaking ball has 11/5 shape with gradual break.  Change-up has arm-side run and is thrown for strikes at 75-77mph.  Jared was consistently in the strike zone.

Brandon Turner, 2B, Mt. Vernon HS

A 6-foot , 185 pound infielder ran a 6.83 60yd dash.  At the plate, he has a crouch setup with a short stride.  Bat speed is above average with a level bat path.  Produced line drives.  Exit velocity registered at 84mph.  Defensively, he has an average arm with fluid footwork.  Exchange is clean.  Throws topped at 71mph.

Tre Watson, SS, Providence HS

A 5-foot-11,  185 pound INF showcased solid actions defensively.  Hands are above averages with a clean exchange.  Infield velocity registered at 83mph.  Plays through the ball well.  At the plate, he has a balanced setup with a short stride.  Produced line drives with some pop.  Exit velocity registered at 85mph. Ran a 7.30-60.
