Welcome to the Arizona Daily Roundup. 

Baseball season is finally here. As of Friday, March 12th, the AIA high school baseball season is officially off and running. Throughout the spring, PBR will be posting Daily Roundup with some scores and select performances from past games.

No.17 Horizon walks off No. 20 Pinnacle in extras

2021 3B Michael Riley (Pinnacle)- uncommitted, gave Pinnacle an early vs Horizon, hitting a Grand Slam to deep LCF field to make 6-0. He we 2 for 3 with 5 runs batted in on the day. 2021 OF Austin Corbett (Horizon)- Paradise Valley commit, got the game winning hit to cap off his 4 for 6 day at the plate. He also batted 5 runs in while scoring 2 runs of his own. Juniors, SS Jace Behnke1B Kade Huff also had big days at the plate. Behnke was a homer a way from the cycle, going 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored. Huff hit 2 doubles of his own on the day while scoring a run. Horizon wins 10-9 in extra innings.  

 

Bats of No. 4 Red Mountain come alive from the start

Red Mountain scored 8 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning vs Desert Ridge, followed by a 6-run 3rd inning. The Mountain Lions logged 14 hits over the 41/2 inning game. 2021 Justin Powell led the offense with 3 hits, 3 runs & 5 RBI's on two doubles and a HR. 2022 OF TJ Adams (Arizona commit) also had a HR of his own with 2 runs & RBIs. 2022 2B Brayden Grantham hit a triple and double from the leadoff spot. 2022 Mitch Namie (Fullerton commit) & Acedo also had multi hit games. 2021 RHP RJ Elmore (Grand Canyon recruit) was the opening day starter throwing 4 shutout innings, striking out 5 batters while only allowing 2 hits. 

Mountain Ridge trio logs no hitter to start season

The Mountain Ridge pitching trio of seniors, Gray Bailey (UT-Arlington), Cayden Collins (Yavapai) & Matthew Martinez combine for a no hit shutout in opening game vs Kofa. All three pitchers combine for 14 strikeouts in the no hitter while only walking 3 hittes. Bailey started on the mound going 3 innings, striking out 8 batters while only surrendering one walk. Collins went two innings, striking out four, no walks. Martinez closed off the game striking out two with two walks. 2022 Josh Wakefield went 2 for 5 with a double, 2RBIs and run scored in the game. 

Canyon Del Oro takes it to Ironwood Ridge in opener

Canyon Del Oro beats a strong Ironwood Ridge team 13-3 to start their season. 2021 RHP Dante Schindler (Canyon Del Oro) started on the mound throwing 5 strong innings. He struck out 9 batters while surrendering 3 hits & a walk with zero earned runs. Seniors, C Andrew Stucky (Pima commit) & RF/1B Jayden Bracy both led the offense with 3 hits a piece. Stucky hit a double with 2 RBI's while scoring 3 runs. Bracy batted 5 runs in and scored a run of his own.

Other Performances:

2021 RHP Kaden Schiefelbein (Liberty)- Started on the mound in Liberty's 6-2 win vs San Luis. Schiefelbein threw 3 shutout innings for the Lions. Struck out 6 batters while only surrendering 1 hit. 2022 OF Kolby Felix went 2 for 4 with a 2B in the game. Freshmen, Austin Charles (San Diego State commit) started at 3B and notched his first varsity hit. 

Benjamin Franklin HS won their first game of the season at home vs ALA Ironwood by a score of 9-4. 2022 Dante Turgeon who will be playing some SS for the Chargers went 2 to 4 with a double & HR, 2 runs & 2 RBIs. 2022 CF Jalen Kupitz also had a big day at the plate going 3 for 4 with 3 doubles, 2 runs & 2 RBIS.
