Line-Drive Leaders - NW Pre-Season Invite (Underclass)

Dan Jurik
Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

Continuing to look at some of the top performances from our NW Pre-Season Invite last month.

We've already released our statistical leaders and have taken a look at some of the impressive metrics that were posted.

Upperclass Hitting / Upperclass Pitching

Underclass Hitting / Underclass Pitching

Continuing our coverage with a group of 10 prospects in the Underclass session (2023 - 2025) that stood out for their consistent and professional BP rounds. The group below were towards the top in line-drive % and also total line-drives across their rounds and put together impressive spray charts. Regardless of whether you're old school or new school, being able to produce line-drive contact and spray contact to all parts of the field will always have a place in the game.

Although we might be indoors, using the Trackman portable B1 unit allows us to look at spray charts and contact info post-event. Helping create a comprehensive understanding of how a player performed. For graphics and visual charts on the following players, visit our Instagram (pbr_washington).

LINE-DRIVE LEADERS

Underclass

Axel Puls SS / 3B / Blaine, WA / 2023

New to the state after relocating from Hawaii. Puls showed off impressive switch-hitting ability and a feel for staying in the middle of the field from both sides of the plate. Uses a high leg lift as both a RH and LH to sync up with a tight hand load prior to launching swing. Strong lower half helps him stay centered and keep control of the barrel into contact

Alex Howard 3B / 2B / Seattle Prep, WA / 2023

Consistent offensive performer who continues to excel at the plate with polished, mature rounds of BP. Starts from an upright set-up with high hand placement above rear shoulder. Hands shift down and back during knee-knock load into forward stride. Short levers help him stay inside of the ball and there’s noticeable hand speed in the swing

Davis Downer OF / 1B / Kamiak , WA / 2024

Strong and athletically built at 5-foot-10, 185 pounds. Downer has a developed frame and stays balanced at the point of contact. Very few moving parts in the swing. Uses a toe tap load & keeps hands still prior to working direct to the ball. High, lofted finish with extension up the middle as he finishes

Nathan Woodside C / 3B / Woodinville , WA / 2024

left-handed hitting backstop with some exciting pop in the bat. Woodside stays tall in his frame and creates leverage from a strong, posted frontside at the dish. Allowing him to create more loft than you might anticipate. Keeps the barrel tight to his core and allows everything to work inside of the baseball. Stays quiet in his set-up and lets the quickness in his hands work.

Oliver Hogan 3B / RHP / Garfield, WA / 2023

6-foot-2, 180 pounds with a developed, mature frame. Hogan moves well through his core and allows his physicality to translate into an aggressive, level swing. Puts a slow, controlled forward move on the ball as he lands in a wide hitting base with clean direction towards the pitcher. Stays centered in his lower half & lets the ball travel into the zone. Lower finish thru contact helps him drive line-drives to his pull-side.

Jake Daily C / 3B / West Seattle, WA / 2023

Daily had a solid all-around performance and showed improvement across all areas compared to the last look we had over the summer. Offensively he widened out his stance and shortened up his forward stride. Allowing him to stay coiled in his back hip with weight on his back-side to begin. Hands stay loaded then work through the zone quickly as he rotates into contact. Consistently worked pull-side with added lift in the swing.

Connor Schuneman OF / RHP / Skyline, WA / 2024

Schuneman continues to show repeatable feel for manipulating his barrel and looks poised to continue his hitting ways as he develops. The swing covers depth in the zone and his barrel is consistently on time with the ball. Presently shows a level, line drive swing & a flatter finish through contact. Leverage in his lower half could translate into more power down the road as he gets stronger.

Jacob Bresnahan LHP / OF / Sumner, WA / 2023

Lean, wiry athlete who made significant strides in his game over the last year and still offers plenty of projection. Bresnahan showed off added physicality that translated to all areas of his game but especially helped elevate his offensive potential. Smooth swinging lefty consistently drove the ball to his pull-side and will likely flash more power down the road as his frame adds additional strength.

Jacob Muench 1B / LHP / Capital, WA / 2025

Young prospect in the ‘25 class who flashed overall feel for the game and solid actions that project well for the future. In the box, gathers weight back with a controlled, knee-knock leg lift prior to taking his forward stride. Hips open up first as hands shift down and back to get his barrel on plane with the ball. Fluid swing path into a high, 2-handed finish. Keeps a firm front side at contact as head stays down to the ball.

Luke Chaney C / SS / Union , WA / 2024

One of the most well-rounded prospects in the ‘24 class. Chaney’s size and athleticism help him impact the game in a lot of ways. Offensively he hits from a tall, upright stance with simple, quiet actions. Takes a low forward stride after a subtle weight shift and hits from a wide base. Hands show some rhythm and movement prior to initiating swing. Barrel works easily through the zone on a level path and then work up to a high finish after contact. Peppered the middle of the field throughout BP.
