Quick Hits - Washington Summer Open

Dan Jurik
Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

On Sunday June 25th we were over at the immaculate confines of Husky Ballpark at the University of Washington as we continued our summer tour of events.

For most in the baseball world the summer schedule is as hectic as it gets. From scouts to coaches to players, everyone is traveling the country looking for the best experiences possible and many are trying to navigate the landscape to put themselves in the best possible situation to #BeSeen.

Our Summer Tour of open showcases takes the approach of making it easier for the player to find a local event, open to all grad classes and skill levels, and providing the opportunity to get in front of our scouts during the hectic schedule of summer baseball, keeping their PBR Profile as current as possible.

The Summer Tour of open events also leads to identifying prospects for some of the summer’s biggest invite only events like Top Prospect, Future Games, State Games and more.

With batting practice, bullpens and defense, summer events allow athletes to show off their progress and development from the off-season and present the most up-to-date information on themselves.

Quick Hits is a recap of some of the top performances that stood out to us on Saturday. It is not a ranking or top prospect list. Additional content including statistical leaders will be coming out as well.

‘24 OF/RHP Ian Hendry (Everett) started the day with a quality 6.97 in the 60 then followed it up with 80 mph arm strength from the OF in the defensive portion. Took BP with a level, rotational path through the zone with mostly LD contact, working pull-side. On the mound he has solid athleticism in the delivery with a FB/CB/CH combo coming from a shorter arm action.

‘24 C Cody Leaverton (West Valley) took a mature round of BP on the day, showing some of the best swing metrics we’ve seen this summer in terms of his ability to create rotational power while staying on-plane with the barrel. Strong, stocky build helps him stay in his legs at contact and hold his finish with extension. Quick receiver behind the dish with a compact set-up.

‘24 SS/RHP Branson Rozier (Eisenhower) was a 2-way standout on the day. Displaying plenty of athleticism at SS with an above average arm and then jumping on the bump to pitch 82-84 with a power CB and heavy CH. Offensively he has a heavy barrel through the zone with easy lift to pull-side gap. Creates bat speed easily and finishes with a slightly uphill path.

‘24 Ethan Swenson (Mountlake Terrace) features an above average frame at 6’7, 230 lbs and he leverages it well in the box. Found a groove in BP and got up to a peak EV of 95 mph while showing consistent lift to pull-side and chance to develop even more power as he adds strength. High marks for his bat speed and hand speed at the dish which bodes well for his ability to control the barrel in the zone.

‘25 OF Briggs Ellis (O’Dea) posted the fastest 60 on the day with a 6.89 while showing burst out of the gate & quick acceleration. Moves well in the OF with enough arm strength to stick long-term. Offensively features a tight, compact swing with a quick path into contact. Strong, short levers help him stay inside of the ball.

‘25 1B Andrew Fetty (Kamiak) got everyone’s attention during batting practice as he went out and averaged 91.2 mph with his EV while peaking at 101.1 mph from the left side. Showed quick, powerful hands with tight levers in the swing. Very simplified approach at the plate with few moving parts. Gets the barrel out easily with controlled intent. Exciting left-handed bat to watch this summer.

‘25 C Joe McJunkin (Juanita) has an ideal profile as a left-handed hitting catcher and showed a solid blend of speed & power on this look. Posted a 6.95 in the 60 to start the day while also flashing improved power at the plate. Shows a classic, slightly uphill lefty stroke with present gap to gap power. EV up to 91.3 mph. Defensively he’s a compact target behind the plate with quickness out of the crouch into his throwing motion.

‘26 INF/RHP Zach Daniel (North Creek) is an exciting 2-way prospect to watch in the class. A wiry, twitchy athlete with crisp actions and an athletic demeanor on the field. He showed burst out of the gate with easy footwork on defense with projectable arm strength. Loose, whippy barrel at the plate with some hand speed and ability to spray ball to all fields. Athleticism translates well to the mound with a loose arm action and fluid rotation through his core in the delivery.

‘27 OF Luke Overbay (Tumwater) checks a lot of boxes for a young, up and coming prospect. Great frame to grow into at 6’1, 160 with a high-waisted frame with wiry upper half.  Arm plays well from the OF presently with a short path into longer extension at release, giving him carry and accuracy. Offensively there’s a lot of power on the way as he continues to mature. The hands stay tight to the core while he keeps his leverage in his lower half at contact. Quick, aggressive barrel action into the zone with some twitch. Name to watch in ‘27 class.
