Madison Preseason I.D.: Preview

By Andy Sroka & Diego Solares

This Sunday, March 14, the PBR Wisconsin team is hosting the Madison Preseason I.D. at GRB Academy in Windsor, Wis. This is an open event for all high school classes (2021-24), and gives our staff an ample look at the area's top players – perennially the largest event on our entire showcase calendar.

For a closer look at the showcase details and the technologies we'll have on-site to assist our in-person evaluation for all in attendance, click here. For a complete look at those registered to attend this event, view the most up-to-date version of the roster by clicking here.

EVENT HISTORY

Perennially one of the largest events on our calendar, last year’s Madison Preseason I.D. displayed a loaded roster from top-to-bottom with 49 players already committed to play baseball at the next level.

With approximately 200 players in attendance year in and out, the Madison I.D. hosts some of the region’s top talent. Looking back at last year’s roster, there are already 49 players committed, and counting, amongst that group.

Several prominent names from the state’s 2021 class were at this event last year – who were uncommitted at the time – including INF Carson Shepard (Sun Prairie; Ohio commit), OF Tanner Marsh (Mondovi; University of St. Thomas), RHP Bryce Leedle (Markesan; University of St. Thomas), INF Austin Bestul (Elkhorn; Indianapolis), and RHP Andrew Brockwell (Brodhead; Western Kentucky). Shepard entered last year’s event as one of the state’s best already, but he sharply raised his stock after an excellent all-around performance here.

The Madison I.D. is frequently a place where we’re able to start gathering some names to add to our PBR Future Games watchlist. Eight players from last year’s roster wound up earning invitations to last August’s Future Games: OF Cuyler Zukowski (Madison La Follette, 2022; Creighton), RHP Mason Buss (Arrowhead, 2022; Kansas State), RHP Ryan Karst (Brookfield East, 2022; uncommitted), LHP Taylor Kilps (Whitnall, 2022; uncommitted), RHP Logan Dobberstein (Pewaukee, 2022; Kansas State), OF Addison Ostrenga (Sun Prairie, 2022; Iowa), RHP Torin Byrnes (Tremper, 2022; uncommitted), and LHP/OF Christian Oppor (Columbus, 2022; uncommitted).

THIS SUNDAY

A handful of 2023s impressed at last year’s event as well, including a few names that we’ll see this upcoming weekend: RHP Cole Selvig (Regis; uncommitted), RHP/OF Dylan Questad (Waterford; Notre Dame), and RHP/INF Roman Trapani (Eau Claire Memorial; uncommitted).

Already a top-10-ranked player in the state’s ‘23 class, Selvig is a pitcher capable of taking his game to the next level on Sunday. He was highly impressive at the start of last summer, and again in the fall where he was up to 87 mph with a tight breaking ball and one of the state’s best changeups.

If you’re seeking uncommitted members of the state’s 2022 class to know ahead time, then look no further. There’s a talented crop of players still on the market who warrant attention ahead of time on this roster, a few of whom were also members of last summer’s PBR Future Games roster: 3B Davis Hamilton (Sun Prairie), INF Kolton Schaller (Mount Horeb), 3B/RHP Nick West (Verona Area), and Christian Oppor, who was mentioned in the section above.

Hamilton swings an easy, on-time left-handed bat with reliable actions at third base. Schaller was one of Team Select’s most productive hitters at the Future Games; another left-handed hitter in a projectable 6-foot-1, 175-pound frame. West is a physical switch-hitter with tools, bat speed, and he offers some upside on the mound as well. Oppor’s among the top athletes set to attend, and his arsenal on the mound has reportedly ticked up, a development to follow closely.

Davis Hamilton (8/2/20)

RHP Nolan Klug (Menomonee Falls) is an unranked 6-foot-5, 225-pound righty who probably won’t be unranked for much longer. He’s a physical pitcher who generates notable carry while working off a steep plane to home. He was up to 83 mph early last summer, but he’s reportedly worked hard to markedly tick up.

OF/INF N.J. Elias (Verona Area), INF Caleb Guden (Medford), and OF/RHP Dominik McVay (Mineral Point) are a few stand-out athletes in this class, still uncommitted. Elias’ athleticism has helped him show as a versatile player capable of roaming around the outfield or up the middle of an infield. Guden’s showed well at shortstop in live action, and he’s a switch-hitter who looks the part from both sides. McVay is a compact/strong player who ran a 6.58 at this event last year – he also homered in front of our staff over the summer and was up 84 mph on the mound that same weekend.

N.J. Elias (6/30/20)

This is really just scratching the surface of the number of follow uncommitted ‘22s headed our way on Sunday, so be on the lookout for the day’s findings early next week.

The Class of 2023 will be well-represented here as well. Two of the state’s top sophomores, both catchers, are registered: Thomas Curry (Arrowhead) and Maxwell Kalk (Kimberly). Curry’s strength and barrel feel have shown through in front of our staff on several occasions, allowing him to impact the baseball at an advanced rate. Kalk’s a highly athletic, left-handed-hitting backstop with loose, all-around actions that raise both his floor and ceiling as a prospect.

Adding prospects to our 2023 watchlist is a high priority for us at this event, so we’re eager to add new names to our follow lists after Sunday’s showcase – in addition to updating the reports on the player’s we’re already familiar with.

And an atypical 2020 prevented us from gaining a clearer picture of the state’s freshman class, but we’re familiar with a few of the names set to join us on Sunday. The class as a whole is trending to be a strong crop, and this event will allow us to gain a more thorough look of the 2024 group ahead of the spring and summer.

NEW CHECK-IN PROCESS

Because of the number of prospects set to attend Sunday’s event, it is imperative that you read our adjusted showcase itinerary below, which will allow our staff to swiftly and efficiently educate and evaluate the players set to attend.

Additionally, in an effort to continue and develop contactless check-in strategies, upon arrival, players will scan a QR Code with their smart phone camera that will lead them to a Google Form. On that Form, players will enter their name (matching the spelling on their PBR profile) and hit submit. Upon submission, players will be prompted to click a link that will direct them to their jersey color and number, located next to their registered name.

ITINERARY

Due to state guidelines, and the facility's requirements, there will be a limit to the number of people inside the facility at one time so, unfortunately, parents will NOT be allowed within the facility. This showcase will operate in segmented groups, by position, under the format as follows (players need to wear turf shoes or molded spikes, as metal cleats are NOT allowed):

Click here to learn more about our tech partners that have enhanced our players showcase experience. Partners like TrackMan and Blast Motion have helped both our in-event evaluation process, as well the compilation of our post-event scouting reports – and they're also a tool for our players to learn more about their measured and collected data, that can be applied to improve upon their game.

Finally, masks are mandatory during non-baseball activity. We will facilitate a contact-less check-in. Staff will wear masks throughout the event. Hand sanitizer stations will be accessible. Wear baseball clothes; assigned and numbered PBR jerseys will be provided.
