This spring we take a different approach to the unveiling of our Preseason Power25 teams across the commonwealth/DC. Instead of one full release, we will be doing a countdown starting today and running all the way to the beginning of the high school season. Over the course of the next 2.5 weeks, we will be counting down our preseason top 25.

VA/DC Preseason Power25: No. 11 - Potomac

Preseason Rank: 11
Level: VHSL Class 5 Region
Head Coach: Mike Covington (25th Season)
2018: 22-5 Region D Champs, Class 5 State Runner-up

Josue Cumba RHP/IF 2019 (pictured)

X-Factor

Braden Mack & Ben Thomas - Though neither of these two players are new to the team, they will see an increased role in 2019. Their success could play a big factor for the Panthers this spring.

Key Players Lost

Blake Gatewood
TJ Reney

Outlook

Your defending state runner-ups look like they could challenge yet again for a 5A title in their final year in 5A this spring. Leading the way for the Panthers will be their all-everything returner ace and No. 3 hitter LHP/OF Brody Mack. Mack will again pace Potomac this season and don't be surprised to see another impressive year from the senior bound for William & Mary.

Though the Panthers lost their No. 2 and key arm in Blake Gatewood, they look to have a capable replacement in RHP Josue Cumba. Cumba is a nice uncommitted 2019 who was recently up to 85 mph a few weeks ago at our VA/DC Preseason All State. Cumba could be a big piece of the puzzle as the season progresses for the rotation.

Offensively Cumba will also pace the top of the order for the Panthers with Mack hitting in the three spot. Julian Cumba, twin brother to Josue, will also be nice piece in the lineup and provide speed as well in the order. Adding depth will be 2020 C Braden Mack  who should see an increased role this year and could be a big factor with a successful year. Also keep an eye out for Ben Thomas as a key cog returning this spring. Look for another contending run in 2019 as Potomac gets our nod at No. 11 in our Preseason Power25.
