Oklahoma Class of 2022: Updated Rankings

Andy Urban
Oklahoma Scouting Director

Opening day in the Sooner State is just around the corner, and after a full slate of events throughout the fall and winter, an update to the 2022 rankings is here. A strong crop of sophomores will be hitting the diamond this spring with many poised to make an impact at the varsity level. As evidenced by an impressive 12 players in Overall Rankings, this group is already making a name for itself on the national scene, with many more building a strong case to jump onto the list in the future. Below, the PBR Oklahoma staff takes an in-depth look at top 3 prospects, each of which could ultimately challenge for the top overall spot, as well as the top newcomers, risers, and a glance at the top 10.

Top 3

One of the best young left-handers in the country, currently ranked in the top 20 overall in PBR’s coverage aread, Kyndon Lovell (Lookeba-Sickles HS) rises into the top spot in the Oklahoma Class of 2022 Rankings. The 6-foot, 160-pound lean athlete uses a very short and quick arm action coming through a high-¾ slot with elite arm speed. Lovell is generally in the zone at 87-89 mph when fresh flashing some arm-side run. More impressive than the fastball velo is Lovell’s feel for an elite breaking ball at 75-76 mph with 1/7 shape, tight spin, and late depth, consistently in the zone. He also mixes in a solid changeup at 74-75 mph.

Recent Oklahoma State commit, SS Jackson Holliday (Stillwater HS), maintains his top 50 overall ranking and No. 2 spot in the OK rankings. The left-handed hitter had a strong year for Stillwater HS starting at SS as a freshman and helping them reach 6A state tournament and ending his summer with an impressive performance at the PBR Future Games. Holliday does not yet jump on the page with his measurables, what he does show is an elite ability to recognize pitches and control the barrel leading to hard contact against some of the best arms in the class. One of the younger players in the 2022 class, Holliday has just started to put on size and strength with much more to come.

Filling the third spot in the very talented OK 2022 class is the physically advanced Oklahoma commit SS/RHP Caden Powell (Clinton HS). An impressively strong 6-foot-3, 200-pound frame, the right-handed hitter already shows one of the top exit velos in the state of any class, 95 mph, with enough barrel control to turn it in to elite level production. At the OK Preseason All-State Powell produced the most impressive round of BP with nearly every ball finding the back of the cage on a line headed for the gaps. Defensively, Powell will likely have to move to third base or first base as he continues to develop with size and strength, but will likely have the hands and arm strength to stay there. Though more currently advanced with the bat, Powell’s size and arm strength serves him well on the mound as well.

Newcomers

Brennan Morgan, RHP/3B, Marlow HS
A physically advanced and durable 6-foot-1, 210-pound frame with some strength throughout. Offensively Morgan possesses more pop then his 85 mph exit velo would suggest with a pull and lift approach with put multiple balls off the wall in BP. On the mound, the right-hander ranged 82-85 mph on a chilly night, The right-hander also spun an advanced curveball with full arm speed at 72-74 mph with near 12/6 shape.

Brett McComas, C/RHP, Deer Creek HS
A lean 5-foot-9, 152-pound frame with plenty of room to add size and strength. Currently a pitcher and a catcher, McComas shines most brightly on the mound. The right-hander gets down the mound with some athleticism and explosiveness followed by a long, loose and fast arm action coming through a near over the top slot. His fastball sits 84-86 mph flashing some arm-side run. The changeup is thrown with full arm speed at 74-78 with consistent run. Slider is advanced with 11/5 shape and late swing and miss depth. McComas is still  learning to command the strike zone with all three pitches.

Jack Bucholz, RHP, OF, Norman North
A lean 5-foot-11, 150-pound frame with lots of room to add size and strength. On the mound, the right-hander works only from the stretch with a high and controlled leg kick before gliding down the mound and finishing to the first base side. Arm action is short in the back before coming through a high-¾ arm slot with some arm speed. Fastball sits 81-83 mph with some arm-side run, nearly all strikes. Curveball is advanced with tight spin, late depth, and 11/5 shape at 69-70 mph, nearly all strikes. Changeup shows some late fade, thrown with fastball arm speed at 74-75 mph, some strikes. In the game, Bucholz punched out six of the eight batters he faced, only allowing two infield hits.

Broderick Finlay, SS/RHP, Norman North HS
A lean and projectable 6-foot-2, 170-pound frame. The two way prospect does a solid job of throwing strikes and will put on velo in the near future, but currently is more advanced as a SS. Offensively, the right-handed hitter has simple mechanics getting his front foot down early followed by a flat swing song and an all fields approach, finding nearly all barrels. Off the tee, Finlay shows solid barrel strength for his age at 84 mph. Defensively, shows clean actions with soft hands and feel for angels. Throws with excellent accuracy across the diamond at 80 mph.

Elijah Laus, SS, Edmond North HS
A developing 5-foot-7, 150-pound  frame. The right-handed hitter begins with an even stance utilizing a lift-and-replace stride to initiate a slightly uphill barrel path into the hitting zone. Advanced hip shoulder separation created pull side pop and twitch while hitting into a stiff front side. Registered a solid 85 mph bat-exit velocity from the tee with feel for the barrel during batting practice. Recorded a 7.34 60-yard dash. The primary middle infielder featured active footwork creating advantageous hops allowing for momentum towards the target. Soft hands and smooth transfers yielded accurate 72 mph arm-strength out of a short, high ¾ arm-slot. Already putting up solid numbers with clean actions, Laus should advance quickly as his body develops.

Risers

Spencer Boles, OF, Choctaw HS
The 5-foot-11, 185-pound primary outfielder showcased a physical frame with present athleticism. The right-handed hitter begins from a square stance utilizing a controlled leg-lift to initiate his swing. The right-handed hitter begins with a wide, even stance utilizing a quick toe-tap stride to initiate his swing.
