Run: 7.00 runner in the 60. Runs with high, short, choppy steps.
At the plate, Poppell can keep all of his weight and energy in the backside with a simple rock back load. The 2021 switch hitter displays a similar approach on both sides of the plate staying inside the ball well from the left side and likes to turn on the ball from the right side. Behind the plate the 5-foot-11, 185 pound backstop replaces the feet smoothly with a clean transfer and strong throws that he gets on top of and can ride it through the bag with consistent sub 2.0 pop times.
Opened eyes on both sides of the ball via consistent in-game barrels and showing his versatility on defense. Caught in the first game and blocked exceptionally. 2.07-2.12 pop times with a quick arm and good feet. Then he played a stellar shortstop in game 2 making all the routine plays and a diving play up the middle. Ran a 7.16 60-yard dash. Bat to ball skills of the switch hitter are advanced from both sides. Has good launch from backside. Tripled to pull side gap on a 93 mph fastball. Just an all-around solid baseball player that will make an impact wherever he goes at the next level with his ability to play anywhere and do whatever is asked of him.
The switch hitting catcher and middle infielder was an all around standout. In the infield, he has present twitch and athleticism, with range and works under control through the ball with quick release. Behind the plate he has a quick transfer and solid footwork which translated to 1.95-2.11 pop times. Offensively, he stood out from both sides, but was slightly more aggressive from the left side. With present bat speed and pull power. Exit velocity of 87 mph. From the right side it was simple, compact level and quick through the zone. Has a chance to be a well above average ultra utility player.
