PBR: Tell us all about your recruitment process, when it started, and why you decided to commit to Maryland?
Savacool: Probably the same as everyone else’s--getting stronger and getting smarter. I love working out and I have gained 12 pounds in about two months since the end of the season. Also, I work with my high school coaches on the mental game and pitching strategies. On my own, I love watching videos on effective velocity and a number of other topics.Savacool: I had a pretty good freshman year on varsity this past spring. Then, I attended PBR’s New York State Games and had a good showing. Several Division I schools began communicating with my coaches and offers started coming in shortly after. I had been recruited by Coach Muscara at St. John’s and when he got the pitching coach position at Maryland, he and Coach Vaughn began recruiting me. In addition, I was invited to PBR’s Future Games, a Perfect Game tournament, and the Area Code Underclass Games. After throwing five perfect innings in Georgia at Perfect Game, several more schools began recruiting me. I wasn’t planning on committing as early as I did, but after seeing the campus and meeting with the Maryland coaches, I knew that I had found the perfect fit.
PBR: Looking at your skillset on the baseball field, what would you say your biggest strength at the next-level will be?
Savacool: All through my recruitment, the most consistent comment I got from coaches was my maturity and intelligence on the mound. I’d like to think that I am pitcher and not a thrower. Other than that, what I am most proud of is my ability to command multiple pitches.
PBR: What’s your No. 1 priority going into the Winter in terms of getting prepared for next spring?
PBR: Who is your biggest influence when it comes to playing the game of baseball?
Savacool: My dad. He introduced the game and its many facets to me at a young age. Most pitchers start focusing and breaking down their mechanics when they get into high school but my dad has been helping me break that down since I was a young child, since about 8 or 9 years old. He’s also taught me how to be a pitcher through having me play up a couple levels or talking about the game and how I pitched after it. He’s definitely a big part of why I am able to be answering these questions about my commitment.
PBR: Prep Baseball Report’s No. 1 goal is to provide players with an unrivaled platform filled with next-level exposure through events and multi-media avenues. What’s your experience been with us?
Savacool: PBR was the jump-start to my recruitment. Every event I went to was organized well and provided a ton of exposure for me. Every performance at these events was followed by new coaches wanting to contact me and offers from top class schools every time. I wound up committing to Maryland immediately after the Future Games in Indianapolis. I want to say a huge thanks to PBR for making my dream of playing at a high level school like Maryland a reality.
