New England Insider: Early Signing Period - Division 1 Recruiting Class Breakdown

The NCAA early signing period started November 8th, 2017 and ran through the 15th. With the fall signing period upon us, we look to break down each individual Division I commitment from in-state prospects, where they are headed and what tools they will bring with them.

Overview: Mike Gambino and company continue to build the Boston College program as they have signed another legit recruiting class. They have addressed issues on the mound and positionally with this class. They do a very thorough job identifying the right player for them and have seen that approach lead to success on the field. This class is no different.

Peter Burns C / 3B / Austin Prep, MA / 2018 The 26th ranked player in the Class of 2018 for New England is a left-handed hitting catcher with plus thunder in the barrel . Burns should jump right into the mix the minute he steps on campus cause of his bat.  A solid defender, with the ability to receive and throw. In my eyes,  Peters is in the middle of the order by his sophomore campaign in Chestnut Hill.

Cody Morissette SS / 2B / Exeter, NH / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 11 / POS: 1 OverallRank: 196 / POS: 33 Left-handed hitting middle infielder with a huge upside, ranked 12th in the PBR New England Class of 2018. The frame has yet to fill out and he shows the ability to run  and maneuver the barrel. He can play a bunch of different spots in the infield, adding much needed versatility in the ACC. Could be an everyday player sometime later in his freshman campaign.

Travis Lane RHP / 1B / Phillips Academy Andover, MA / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 14 / POS: 7 The 14th ranked player in New England is a physical right-handed arm whose brother already pitches for BC. The arm has plenty of strength to it, as he pitches in the low-90s. The secondary stuff is coming along nicely and as long as he stays healthy he could garner some innings immediately for the Eagles.

Joe Mancini RHP / SS / Fairfield Prep, CT / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 18 / POS: 10 The 18th ranked player in the Class of 2018 PBR New England is a 6-foot-1, 195-pound athletic right-hander out of Connecticut who has a great deal of promise as well on the bump. Pitches 89-91 with more in the tank. The secondary stuff is aggressive and he shows the ability to compete at a higher level. He will be a welcomed addition to the staff in Chestnut Hill

George Emmet Sheehan RHP / OF / Salisbury School, CT / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 92 / POS: 41 6-foot-5, 180-pound long and lanky right-hander. The fastball sits in the upper-80s with the makings of a plus slider as his main secondary pitch. The slider should get him innings right away and with innings he should develop into a high level arm. The changeup is in play already and should add to his pitchability in college.  Another guy to follow on the pro level.

Sal Frelick SS / Lexington, MA / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 26 / POS: 4 5-foot-10, 175-pound left-handed hitting shortstop who can really run with the best of them. A plus runner who hits from the left-side and plays in the middle of the field. What more can you ask for. Frelick is ranked 27th in the PBR New England Class of 2018

Ramon Jimenez SS / 2B / Chicopee, MA / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 33 / POS: 5 The 33rd ranked player in the Class of 2018 PBR New England Rankings. The frame is physical on this Western Massachusetts product.  The bat has plus strength to it and he should hit for power as he matures. The glove is solid and he could end up as a physical corner infielder or an offensive second baseman.

Brown Bears

Overview: Coach Achilles and staff worked long and hard, are bringing in six recruits, four of them being arms, one infielder and one outfielder. These six will compete and help Brown continue to push forward in the Ivy League.

Zachary Fogell LHP / OF / Cumberland, RI / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 103 / POS: 9 Fogell, ranked 103rd in New England, is a left-handed pitcher with a clean arm action that is smooth on the back side. Fastball has climbed in the past six months. Fogell shows the ability to throw all three pitches for strikes and should challenge for innings quickly.

Charles BeilensonRHP / Chaminade College Prep, CA / 2018 Charles Beilenson, a right-handed pitcher from Chaminade College Prep in CA, fastball is 85-88 mph, with a hard slider.

Greg StricklandRHP / 2018 Greg Strickland, a right-handed pitcher, has a strong, durable pitchers frame. The fastball is in a the mid-80s, shows the ability to throw the secondary pitches for strikes.

Jackson HippOF / NC / 2018 Jackson Hipp ranked 135th in North Carolina, a right-handed hitter, swing has length to it, more of a pull approach, look for the power to come at some point.

Bryant Bulldogs

Overview: Coach Steve Owens and assistant Brendan Monaghan continue to bring in top of the line chalk players. They brought in eight total players, four position players (three of them LHH) and four pitchers, two of whom bring it from the left side. Look for this group to help them stay at the top of the Northeast Conference. Jake Gustin is a legit middle infielder who will hit at a very high level. Right-handed pitcher Luke Garofalo, shows potential to pitch with velocity at some point, while righty John Macdonald throws a heavy ball with a strong frame.

Luke Garofalo RHP / SS / Coginchaug, CT / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 98 / POS: 41 Garofalo, a right-handed pitcher, ranked 98th has a fastball in the 85-88 mph range, with the ability to really spin the breaking ball. Look for him to get innings as a freshman.

John Macdonald RHP / Westhill, CT / 2018 John MacDonald, ranked 122nd, is a right-handed pitcher whose fastball is 85-87 mph, works from a higher slot with a breaking ball that shows proper spin and shape. Look for the velocity to climb again, has leverage and works downhill.

Jake Gustin SS / 2B / Peabody Veteran Memorial, MA / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 19 / POS: 2 Gustin, ranked 19th in New England as a middle infielder, hits from the left side with present gap power. Drives the baseball to all fields, better suited for second base but can spell guys on the left side if needed. Look for him to hit at the top of the order.

Matt Woods SS / 2B / Pilgrim, RI / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 60 / POS: 11 Woods, ranked 60th in New England, is a left-handed hitting middle infielder but could get pushed to a corner at some point. The swing is fluid, giving him the potential to hit for average and power down the road.

Jack HalbrunerLHP / NJ / 2018 Jack Halbruner, a left-handed pitcher from South Jersey, ranked 23rd, works from a slightly lower slot with a fastball that sits at 85 mph featuring heavy action to it. The breaking ball has more sweeping action and could be a nightmare left-on-left matchup out of the bullpen.

Charles Beilenson1B / OF / NY / 2018 Vincenzo Castronovo, ranked 24th in New York, is a left-handed hitter who drives the baseball to all fields. Look for him to hit with power over time as he develops. Defensively limited, look for him to play first base or in an outfield corner.

Central Connecticut State University Blue Devils

Overview: Coach Hickey and the Blue Devils coaching staff did well to bring in talent that should pay immediate dividends on campus in 2019. The class features four right-handed arms that could contend for innings as freshman, mixing long-term upside and the chance to produce from the get-go. Right handers Brian Gaughan, Dylan Benton, and Fran Phelan are all amongst the top 50 RHPs in New England. Tim Buchek and Jack Nolan are two right-handed power bats that could find their way into the lineup early in their Blue Devils careers.

Tim BuchekRHP / 1B / Windsor, NY / 2018 Tim Buchek, a two-way standout in New York and ranked as the 8th best prospect in the state, brings power from the right side as a first baseman with an eye-popping 103 MPH exit velocity. As a pitcher, Buchek brings a 84-87 MPH fastball and sharp curveball that should induce swings-and-misses from the jump.

Dylan Benton RHP / SS / Manchester, CT / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 137 / POS: 47 Benton, a right-handed pitcher out of Manchester ranked 137th overall in New England, pitches downhill from a ¾ slot. The fastball is heavy and tops out at 87 MPH right now. Benton already shows command in the zone with the fastball, helping his above average slider play up even further when ahead in the count.

Fran Phelan RHP / 3B / Holy Cross, CT / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 173 / POS: 60 5-foot-11 righty Fran Phelan is the 173rd ranked player in New England and defines pitchability. Phelan mixes his pitches well with above average command and a willingness to challenge hitters.

Brian Gaughan RHP / Walpole, MA / 2017 Rankings  StateRank: 47 / POS: 23 Massachusetts right-hander Brian Gaughan, the 23rd ranked RHP in New England, is a projectable 6-foot-2 and has already touched 87 MPH with his lively fastball. The changeup is already a weapon, showing good movement out of the same slot as the fastball. Expect Coach Hickey & Co. to continue developing the breaking ball as well.

Jack Nolan 3B / 1B / Amity Regional, CT / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 128 / POS: 10 6-foot-4 corner infielder Jack Nolan out of Amity, a member of the 2016 Prep Baseball Report Future Games for Team Connecticut, will bring his impact bat to New Britain. He may end up moving over to first base or left field long term but the bat should play regardless of the position, with a combination of power and bat-to-ball skills.

Michael Torniero OF / LHP / Notre Dame West Haven, CT / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 121 / POS: 16 Torniero, the 16th ranked outfielder in his New England class, is a premium athlete (6.90-60) capable of playing an above average center field to go along with on-base ability, where is legs can impact the game as well.

Connecticut Huskies

Overview: Jim Penders and staff put together another very good recruiting class, bringing in seven arms and five position players. The Huskies landed the top position player from the state of Connecticut in catcher Patrick Winkel along with several power arms in Michael Burrows RHP from Waterford, Tyler Briggs RHP from NFA, Colin Sparaco RHP from Valley Regional, and Tim Pfaffenbichler from Windsor Locks.

A great athlete with pop to all fields, the swing and approach are already advanced. Defensively, Winkel has soft hands with an above average arm, look for him to step in and play immediately if he doesn’t end up in pro ball following the 2018 MLB draft. Also from Connecticut is

Will Lucas SS / RHP / Fairfield Prep, CT / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 21 / POS: 3 Fairfield Prep middle infielder Will Lucas, whose arm is his best tool and whose athleticism will allow him to move around defensively. He might get some time off the mound as well.

Michael Burrows RHP / 3B / Waterford, CT / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 7 / POS: 3 OverallRank: 179 / POS: 77 RHP and 2016 Prep Baseball Report Future Games standout Michael Burrows, ranked 7th overall in New England, has made another jump. His fastball has been as high as 94 mph this past fall, one of the biggest competitors in the state.

Colin Sparaco RHP / 3B / Valley Regional, CT / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 169 / POS: 58 Sparaco, a RHP ranked 169th in New England, throws from a lower slot with a fastball in the mid 80’s. The breaking ball is above average with sweeping action to it. Look for him to make an impact and see velocity gains at Storrs.

Tim Pfaffenbichler RHP / OF / Windsor Locks, CT / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 30 / POS: 15 Pfaffenbichler another right-handed pitcher, ranked 30th in New England, also throws from a lower slot. The fastball is in mid to upper 80’s with natural armside run, look for him to get innings out of the bullpen.

Jake Sanderson RHP / OF / St Johns Prep, MA / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 45 / POS: 21 Sanderson a right-handed pitcher from St. John's Prep, ranked 45th in New England, has a super clean and quick arm. The fastball sits 86-88 mph with heavy downward action to it and meshes well with his hard, slurvy breaking ball.

Kyler FedkoMIF / PA / 2018 Kyler Fedko ranked 27th in PA, is a slick fielding middle infielder with above average arm strength. The swing is loose and hands work with ease through the zone. A 6.8 runner, look for him to stick on the left side of the infield.

Adam SchwartzOF / RHP / PA / 2018 Adam Schwartz, ranked 30th in PA, is a potential two-way player who throws a heavy fastball and has strength in his swing.

Dartmouth Big Green

Overview: Coach Whalen is known for having his assistants scower the country for the appropriate talent and has them coming to New Hampshire to play in their awesome venue. This class of 2018 commits is no different as they have done an outstanding job of signing pitching and middle of the field positional players.

Cole Roland RHP / Thayer Academy, MA / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 22 / POS: 11 The 22nd ranked prospect in the New England region and one of my favorite arms. The fastball has downward sink, sits in the upper 80’s. The breaking pitch is simple filthy, 12/6 in rotation and is a knee buckler. The changeup is a work in progress but once he gets a bunch of innings under his belt this guy could be a front line dude.

Chase Jeter LHP / OF / Hall, CT / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 97 / POS: 7 The 97th ranked prospect in New England is a good one. Pitched in the Future Games and showed an above average feel for pitching. The changeup is advanced, an out pitch at the next level right now. His ability to throw strikes and get to his changeup will be paramount at the next level. A great sign for Dartmouth in my opinion.

Ben Rice C / Noble and Greenough, MA / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 96 / POS: 12 The 96th ranked player in New England will head to Dartmouth with a good skill set. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound left-handed hitting catcher is a solid catch and throw defender. With added strength to the frame the bat should develop nicely. Dependent on development will dictate how much he plays early in his college career.

Fairfield Stags

Overview: Fairfield University head coach Bill Currier did a nice job of putting together their 2018 recruiting class. They were seen all over New England and the greater Northeast looking for talent to keep their program at the top of the MAAC.

Pounds the zone, look for him to gain valuable experience as a freshman.

Justin Guerrera SS / 2B / Watertown, CT / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 52 / POS: 9 Guerrera, the 52nd ranked player in New England is a slick fielding middle infielder, hits from the right side with gap power at the moment. Look for him to get quality at bats as a freshman.

Michael Sansone LHP / OF / Notre Dame West Haven, CT / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 117 / POS: 11 Sansone, the 113th ranked player in New England, made a name for himself this past high school season. Developed into the number one starter at Notre Dame West Haven, works quick from the left side, fastball sits in the low 80’s, pounds it hard with an above average changeup. Typical left-handed pitcher at the next level, look for him to gain early innings as a freshman.

Carson Coon RHP / 1B / Orville H. Platt, CT / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 164 / POS: 55 Coon, ranked 164th in New England, is a large right-handed pitcher whose fastball has been as high as 88 mph, living mostly 84-85 mph. The delivery has a ton of arms and legs coming at the hitter. This deception make him difficult to square up and locate the ball coming out of his hand. When everything is on time, his stuff is electric, shows to have proper spin the on the breaking ball.

Walker Sutman LHP / Waterford, CT / 2018 Sutman is a lengthy left-handed pitcher, works down in the zone with his mid 80’s fastball, interesting sign, big time sleeper.

Michael HandelOF / Garden City, NY / 2018 Handel is a fast twitch left-handed hitter. Shows gap power with above average speed, look for him to play right away.

Hartford Hawks

Overview: Coach Blood and his assistants worked tirelessly to put together another solid recruiting class, they targeted needs, bringing in four solid arms, which all of them have serious pitchability. Offensively, Drew Demartino can handle the bat, is advanced with the glove. Don Cohoon,  is athletic and bat will play at the next level. Let's take a closer look.

Donald Cohoon SS / 3B / Plymouth North, MA / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 59 / POS: 10 Cohoon, ranked 59th in New England, is a left-handed hitter, swing is flat and is built for the gaps. Defensively, looks to be able to stick on the left side of the infield.

Drew DeMartino 2B / SS / Taconic, MA / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 100 / POS: 1 Demartino is a slick fielding middle infielder, could play all three spots, might not have enough pop to stick at third, is better suited for one of the middle spots. At the plate can handle the bat, an average runner, game instincts are above average.

Will Nowak SS / RHP / South Windsor, CT / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 171 / POS: 27 Nowak, a two-way player, ranked 171st in New England, arm strength is good, fastball sits 85-87 mph. Projects more as a corner infielder, offensively a chance to be a doubles machine.

Timmy Blaisdell RHP / 3B / Wethersfield, CT / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 239 / POS: 71 Right-handed pitcher Tim Blaisdell, ranked 239th overall in New England, is a projectable 6-foot-2. A three sport athlete now focusing entirely on baseball, expect Blaisdell’s exciting three pitch mix to continue developing under the University of Hartford coaching staff.

Devin Kellogg SS / 2B / Northampton, MA / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 79 / POS: 14 Kellogg, the 14th ranked shortstop prospect in New England, has the defensive skills to help out all over the infield, along with the athleticism and baseball IQ to do the same in the outfield if needed. The Massachusetts native’s offensive game is built around contact and getting on base, which he should continue to do at the collegiate level.

Harvard Crimson

Overview: Coach Decker and his crew did a very good job of identifying high profile athletes with the makeup to handle the academic workload at Harvard. The class is good one and should give them an opportunity to compete for an Ivy League Championship in the coming years, as they are signing good players in each class.

A physical right-handed hitting middle infielder who should warrant playing time immediately in the Ivy League. The bat has a ton of strength to it and he shows the ability to handle himself defensively. Should hit for power as he matures and gets stronger, very good get for the Crimson.

Holy Cross Crusaders

Overview: The Crusaders are fresh off a trip to the NCAA and have done a nice job of reloading their roster with the 2018 class. The are all over the country during the summer looking for players to bring to Worcester. They have done a nice job of finding the appropriate players to bring them a chance to make it the NCAA’s again.

Nate Wolf 1B / OF / Buckingham Browne & Nichols, MA / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 125 / POS: 6 Ranked 125th in the Class of 2018. The big and physical left-handed hitting first baseman projects to hit some home runs in college. The frame is 6-foot-2, 220 pounds and the bat shows good leverage throughout the swing. Good looking offensive bat in the middle of the order. The ball flies out at their park so he is a welcomed addition.

CJ McKennitt 3B / RHP / St. Mark's, MA / 2018 127th ranked player in the New England region, and a early commit to Holy Cross. Plays the corner infield spot and shows good athleticsm and arm strength at that spot. The bat has good life to it and should develop nicely at the Cross.

Ben Malgeri OF / Exeter, NH / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 195 / POS: 29 195th ranked player in the New England region. The New Hampshire product is a very good athlete and the frame projects to fill out as he matures. The foot speed is average but he shows a good feel for getting off the ball in the outfield. Should turn into a solid college players.

Liam Sullivan 2B / 3B / The Rivers School, MA / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 113 / POS: 2 Ranked 113th in the Class of 2018 PBR New England. The bat has plus life to it, projects as an offensive second baseman. Dependent on how much he hits will dictate how early he plays for the Cross. Lindenmeyer is big and long, the right-hander pitches in the upper 80’s and shows promise with his secondary pitches. With innings he should bolster the staff for the Black Bears.

Athletic middle infielder shows and above average glove and the ability to make all the throws. The bat has a clean path to it and with added strength he should make a good versatile player for the Black Bears early in his career.

Bobby Cliche RHP / 3B / Exeter, NH / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 142 / POS: 49 PBR New England has Bobby Cliche ranked 142nd in the region. The physical right-handed pitcher brings an aggressive approach to pitching. He should warrant bullpen time as a freshman as he is aggressive with his pitches and shows the ability to throw strikes.

Ryan Turenne C / 1B / Bridgton academy, ME / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 20 / POS: 4 The 20th ranked player in PBR New England Class of 2018. Ryan Turenne is an athletic left-handed hitting catcher with a ton of upside. Shows an above average skill set behind the dish and the ability to swing the bat from the left-side. He should be a difference maker right away in college.

The slight left-handed hitting middle infielder showed very well the day I saw him. The foot speed is above average and the feel for the glove is very good. Would like to see his arm strength continue to develop and the short game portion of his offensive game be brought to the forefront.

Shows a quick arm and the ability to spin the ball at a high level. He is a welcomed addition to their staff and should garner innings immediately.

Overview: UMass continues to gain ground in recruiting as Recruiting Coordinator stayed on board for the coaching change. They beat the bushes in New England and signed a legit class.  They added much needed left-handed pitching and big long right-handers. Positionally, they added guys who can step in immediately and contribute. Solid job across the board.

Above average catch and throw guy, on the smaller side but receives very well and has plenty of quick twitch in  the transfer. The bat has good life to it, needs to shorten down the swing as he gets to the higher levels.

Tyler Dalton RHP / OF / Mansfield, MA / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 72 / POS: 32 72nd ranked player in the New England region. Coming off a back injury so we will follow closely. The arm is outstanding and he improved in the last two years. The fastball has boar and life to it, sitting in the upper 80’s at times. The breaking ball and changeup are coming along nicely. Should pitch out of the bullpen early in his college career.

Jack Pawloski LHP / OF / Lexington, MA / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 73 / POS: 6 73rd ranked player in the New England region. The left-hander has a high ceiling as the arm is long and clean out front. The frame is thin now but if additional weight is added I can see him making a significant jump in velocity. Solid starter type as he progresses in college.

Kevin Dow OF / LHP / Mansfield, MA / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 67 / POS: 7 67th ranked player in the New England region. Made a nicer jump in velocity this summer on the mound, touching 86 mph. The breaking ball shape is excellent and he shows the correct spin on his changeup. The bat has a chance as well, clean and smooth left-handed swing.  Good solid college arm with a chance to improve as he gets innings.  Positionally, could be a solid left-handed hitting outfielder, a 4th outfielder early in his career.

Jack Steele SS / 3B / Worcester Academy, MA / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 118 / POS: 21 118th ranked player in the New England region. Converted from a middle infielder that could really throw to a pitcher. Huge upside on the mound, as the arm is quick and fast out front. With innings should be able to develop a formative fastball/slider combination.

Christian Walsh 3B / SS / Worcester Academy, MA / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 131 / POS: 11 131st ranked player in the New England region. A big physical corner infielder who projects to swing the bat. The glove is solid and the athleticism is good. Solid addition to the UMass positional approach. Should compete early in his career for innings and at bats in the Atlantic-10 Conference.

Bradley Collins RHP / SS / South Plymouth, MA / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 75 / POS: 33 75th ranked player in the New England region. The frame is formidable and there a good upside to the arm. The leverage on the fastball is plus, pitched in the mid 80’s now. The secondary stuff will have to improve as he gets into college but I like the sign by UMass as the fastball may be enough to help them immediately.

Billie Butler OF / Pontaganset, RI / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 80 / POS: 8 Butler, ranked 80th out of Ponaganset, is a super athletic outfielder that can really swing the stick. With a line drive approach, look for the power to take off under the URI coaching staff.

Mark Coley OF / SS / Bloomfield, CT / 2018 Rankings  StateRank: 88 / POS: 9 Coley, ranked 96th in New England, is another premium athlete. His top tool is his legs. He’s a legit 6.75 runner, still raw overall, but look for the game to take off with experience.

Michael AttonitoOF / LHP / White Plains, NY / 2018 Attonito, a two way player with a clean arm action and is loose on the backside. Fastball is in the low to mid-80s. A left-handed hitter, shows gap power, interesting athlete.
