2023 BC New Year Open: Quick Hits I

Braden Persian
Mainland Director, PBR BC

We would like to thank all who participated in PBR BC's New Year Open. This was a great opportunity for players to get in front of our staff before teams begin heading outdoors for live-game action and preseason tournaments. The event, and all open events, serve as identifiers for PBR Canada Selects rosters that attend national and regional PBR events such as the Future and Jr. Future Games, West Coast Games and our Best of the West team.

Many players impressed during their individual workouts at the showcase. Below we provide scouting notes and video on a trio of standouts from the event.

2023 BC New Year Open - Top Statistical Performers

Leif Friedrich RHP / 3B / Surrey Christian, BC / 2023

Friedrich was the top performer on both sides of the ball, shining on the mound and the 6-foot-4, 210-pound right hander filled the zone with a solid 3-pitch mix. The fastball sat 84-86 with late arm side run. Friedrich rounds out his arsenal with a changeup at 80-84 and a curveball with tight spin at 72-73. In the box Friedrich made some noise with loud contact throughout his round getting up to a 94mph exit velocity (339ft.). Friedrich has good feel for the zone and does a good job staying balanced throughout his load leading to consistent barrels. Friedrich will be a threat on both sides of this ball this year. Big things to come as the season progresses.

Joey Marino SS / 2B / Fleetwood Secondary , BC / 2025

Marino is a young 2025 grad that we continue to see climbing the leader boards and rankings. Marino has been one of the most consistent players across the province. Standing at 5-foot-11, 170-pounds dominates the batters box with an aggressive swing and a loose, repeatable load that leads to Marino finding consistent barrels and launching balls with a top EV of 88.7mph. On the infield Marino shows maturity getting in front of the baseball. He demonstrates sound footwork and smooth hands while receiving the ball before making quick transfers and strong, accurate throws to finish plays. Marino is one of the top up and coming 25’s, look for him to make some noise in the coming months.

Riley Kwak SS / OF / Yale Secondary, BC / 2024

Kwak is an athletic shortstop, running a 6.73 60-yard, proving he has the ability to move effectively up the middle. Kwak displays clean footwork and silky hands in the infield before flashing strong and accurate throws across the diamond. On the offensive side Kwak has a polished swing working from a strong base. He also has the ability to stay through the ball and find the barrel. Kwak did not miss a barrel on the day, averaging 87.8mph off the bat. Kwak is an intriguing young player to keep eyes on in BC.
