Nevada Diamond Notes: Week Seven

Cam Black-Araujo
Nevada Operations

Each week, the Prep Baseball Nevada staff asks High School coaches across the State to fill out our Player/Pitcher of the Week questionnaire which helps us in our selection process of honoring the top performances. With all of the talent throughout Nevada, it can be difficult to just pinpoint one pitcher and positional player each week so our 'Diamond Notes' articles will serve the purpose of highlighting the top performances that were submitted by coaches.

Keep an eye on our social media accounts throughout the week as each Friday/Saturday we will send out the link to the questionnaire with all submissions due at 11:59PM on Saturday.

Below, we'll take a look at some of performances across the State over the past week.

NEVADA DIAMOND NOTES: WEEK SEVEN

'24 C Kaleb Sturman (Shadow Ridge/Uncommitted): Sturman came through in several big moments this past week and played a key role in the team's two wins over Bishop Gorman. The uncommitted senior catcher went 3-for-6 with two doubles, four RBI and two walks on the week and came through with runners in scoring position in the two wins over Gorman. Beyond his work at the dish, Sturman provided value behind the plate as the pitching staff allowed just two runs this past week while he was back there.

'25 SS Jase DeSantis (Arbor View/Long Beach St.): The Long Beach commit flashed his extra-base power this past week in Arbor View's two wins over Foothill as he picked up a HR, triple and double along with six RBI. In total, DeSantis went 5-for-7 with the three extra-base hits, three runs scored, six RBI and a walk. In the two wins, the Aggies outscored Foothill 18-7 as they got back in the win column. DeSantis is now batting .354 with an OBP of .418 and two HR's, two triples and eight doubles.

'24 RHP/3B Nick Collingbourne (SECTA/Uncommitted): Collingbourne may have posted the best single game performance, hitting wise, across the State this past week as he went 3-for-5 with a HR, double, two runs scored and eight RBI in the Roadrunners 17-3 win over Clark on Monday. In total, across three games, the uncommitted senior went 5-for-11 with a HR, two doubles, three runs scored, ten RBI and a walk. The Roadrunners went 2-1 on the week with a pair of wins over Clark and a loss to Sierra Vista.

'25 SS Jacob Ferry (Green Valley/Uncommitted): Ferry swung the bat at an extremely high-level this past week and was a catalyst in the lineup in the team's two victories over Spring Valley. In total, the uncommitted junior went 7-for-7 with a sacrifice fly, three runs scored and three RBI. After batting 1.000 on the week, Ferry now boasts a .352 batting average on the season with seven extra-base hits. The Gators swept the two game set against Spring Valley with 8-4 and 7-1 wins.

'25 SS Caden Birch (North Valleys/Uncommitted): Birch continues to impress this spring season and did so again this past week while playing a pivotal role on both sides of the ball. At the dish, the uncommitted junior went 6-for-10 with a HR, double, six runs scored, two RBI and two walks. On the mound, he came out of the bullpen in an important spot against South Tahoe and worked 2.2 strong innings allowing no runs, three hits, one walk and struck out three as the Panthers picked up a big 11-8 win. Birch continues to produce for North Valleys this spring and the team picked up three wins this past week, two over South Tahoe and another against Sparks.

'24 SS/RHP Brock Morrow (Shadow Ridge/Uncommitted): Morrow, a West Coast Games alum, turned in a strong start for Shadow Ridge on Friday as he worked seven complete innings in a big 3-2 win over Bishop Gorman. In the seven innings, the uncommitted senior allowed just two runs on four hits, one walk and struck out 11. In the same game, Morrow added a base hit and RBI. It was a big week for the Shadow Ridge baseball program and Morrow was a key part to their victory Friday night.

'24 3B/RHP Dylan Franco (Shadow Ridge/Uncommitted): Franco was another senior arm who played a key part in the team's two wins over Bishop Gorman as he got the start on Wednesday and worked five terrific innings en route to a 6-0 win. In the five scoreless innings, the uncommitted talent allowed just one hit and three walks, along with seven punchouts. Franco is an uncommitted senior who's flashed stuff that will play at the next level.

'25 1B/RHP Asa Briggs (SECTA/Uncommitted): Despite the 3-1 loss, Briggs turned in another strong start against Sierra Vista on Tuesday as he worked four scoreless innings allowing just two hits and no walks with five strikeouts. The Roadrunners right-hander continues to impress on the mound this spring as he boasts a 1.40 ERA across 30 innings, along with 42 strikeouts to 13 walks.

'26 SS/RHP Gavin Christensen (Green Valley/Uncommitted): The uncommitted underclassmen got the start and went the distance, seven complete innings, in Green Valley's 8-4 win over Spring Valley. In the seven innings, Christensen allowed four runs on six hits, no walks and struck out five. Christensen has been a bright spot on the mound this spring for the Gators and will be an arm to follow in the program over the next two years as he continues to develop on the mound.
