Region Preview: Class A - Region II

By Greg Williams
WV Director of Scouting

With the start of the high school season is less than a month away we will be previewing each region in each classification statewide. In addition to a look at the top teams we will also highlight some of the top prospects in each region. Look for our initial Elite Eight team rankings in each classification to appear later this month.

Class A - Region II

Preseason Favorites

Notre Dame (27-7) / Moorefield (21-9) / Pendleton County (23-9)

Notre Dame looks to make a third consecutive trip to Charleston but will have to contend with the loss of six seniors, a number of which are playing in college. The Irish return plenty of fire power, and while they might get the early nod, don't sleep on Moorefield or Pendleton County who return the lion's share of their rosters following successful 2014 seasons.

 Preseason Player of the Year

Jordan Miller, RHP/3B, Notre Dame HS (Class of 2016)

Miller comes off a 1st Team All-State selection as a sophomore, helping to lead Notre Dame to the state title game. The 6-foot, 190-pound junior Miller sat in the low 80s out of a high 3/4 arm slot in 2014. He displayed arm side fade to his fastball and his 11/5 breaking ball had tight, sharp break at 72 mph. He utilized his 72-74 mph changeup regularly at fastball arm speed out of the same arm slot as his fastball and curveball. Miller is also a force in the middle of the lineup offensively but is more projectable as a pitcher at the next level.

Top Prospects

East Hardy

* The Cougars lost just two seniors and return 12 members of their roster that finished with a 13-16 mark in 2014.

Moorefield

* The Yellowjackets return all but two members of their sectional title team from 2014.

Notre Dame

Jordan Miller, RHP/C, Class of 2016 (ranked #16 in class)
Josh Baker, 1B/LHP, Class of 2016 (ranked #14 in class)
Chad Morrison, OF/IF/RHP (Class of 2015)
Spencer Harlow, C/RHP, Class of 2015 (ranked #25 in class)
Alex Murray, OF, Class of 2015
Zach Siebel, C/IF, Class of 2016

Paw Paw

* The Pirates look to replace nearly half of their roster that were lost to graduation following a 12-9 season in 2014.

Pendleton County

* The Wildcats lost just four members of a 2014 roster that went 23-9. A repeat trip to the regional tournament where the Wildcats lost in the finals to Notre Dame is a strong possibility.

Pocahontas County

 * The Warriors look to improve on their 6-16 finish in 2014.

South Harrison

Jessy Miller, 3B/RHP (Class of 2015)
Braeden Hurst, SS/RHP (Class of 2016)
Jacob Montgomery, 1B/LHP (Class of 2016)
Ian Riggleman, OF/RHP (Class of 2016)
Brock Herrod, C/2B (Class of 2017)

Tucker County

* The Mountain Lions look to improve on an 8-16 campaign in 2014.

Tygarts Valley

* The Bulldogs graduated just three seniors from a team that went 18-12 in 2014 and lost in the regional semifinals.

Union

* The Tigers struggled to a 2-19 finish in 2014.
