2024 Spring Team Preview: Grand Blanc Bobcats

GRAND BLANC - After winning the 2021 Division 1 state championship and advancing to the state quarterfinals a year ago, the outlook is high once again for Grand Blanc and head coach Kevin Hubbs.

“We expect to contend for a league title and state title every year at Grand Blanc and this year is no exception,” noted the eighth-year head coach, who is 144-65 in his time in charge of the Bobcats. “We return nine starters from last year’s team and have high expectations of ourselves.”

The Grand Blanc mentor pointed to experience, chemistry, pitching depth and work ethic as strengths with this year’s squad looking to carry on the tradition of the program.

“We like to be known as a program that develops our players over the four years that they are in our program and gives them the chance to play in big games and have the opportunity to play in college if they have the desire to,” Hubbs explained. “We pride ourselves on having a great culture and work ethic, and our kids having a high understanding of the game. We also like playing the best competition that we can throughout the season, even if it may affect our win-loss record or individual stats.”

Michigan State signee Nathan Fidelino headlines the returners in the senior class while Notre Dame commit Chris Worley is back to lead a strong group of juniors. The second-rated 2024 third baseman in the state, Fidelino hit .394 with 14 doubles, three triples and two home runs while driving in 43 runs a year ago.

The 18th-ranked senior in Michigan will also help on the mound forming a strong one-two punch with Worley, the fifth-rated 2025 RHP in the state. The 6-0 102-pounder was 7-1 with a 1.23 ERA last season, striking out 75 in 50 innings pitching.

Junior Kaiden Pollack brings another strong arm to the staff, with the 14th-rated 2025 catcher in Michigan also providing a strong stick after batting .354 with 10 doubles, two triples, two home runs and 32 RBIs a year ago.

Trey Williams, the second-ranked junior catcher in the state who batted .344 with nine doubles and 35 RBIs in 2023, adds depth to the pitching rotation.

Luke Trotter, a first baseman/outfielder, and catcher Owen McCollum, are returning seniors for the Bobcats. Trotter hit .396 with 13 doubles, two triples and 39 RBIs while McCollum batted .295 with six doubles, two triple, 14 stolen bases and 21 runs batted in.

Outfielders Chace Hunt and Nate Szcembara and shortstop Liam Compton are juniors back for Grand Blanc. Hunt averaged .334 with 26 RBIs and Szcembara .275 with 15 RBIs and 14 stolen bases while Compton, the 11th-rated 2025 shortstop in Michigan, hit .314 with six doubles, stole 15 bases and drove in 21 last season.

“I like their work ethic and their desire to get better,” Hubbs pointed out about this year’s squad, which must replace four players lost from a year ago in Travis Parsons, Alex Stuart, William Fockler (Earlham) and Avery Kordyzon (Mott CC).

Junior Domnic Tenerelli, who saw time pitching as a sophomore, and 10th-grader Caseton Sendry, a middle infielder and “really good athlete” according to Hubbs, are others expected to play vital roles this year.

“Staying healthy and getting hot at the right time” are keys to success in the eyes of Hubbs.
