Lugoff-Elgin Rides Hot Bats, Key Arms to Championship

Day 2 of the Shipyard / PBR Showdown featured 2 more games in the pool play format, as we ready for the Championship setting on Sunday.  Below we recap the games from Shipyard Park, highlighting player performances.  We also have a link to our Scout Blog for the weekend, with in-depth player analysis. 

As we continue to follow the tournament play, we will update player stats and highlight an all-tournament team.

 

SHIPYARD / PBR SHOWDOWN

 

 

Consolation Game

Ashley Ridge – 0              James Island – 3

Offenses were slowed early at Shipyard as Hogan Garner and CJ Van Slooten toed the rubber for James Island and Ashley Ridge, respectfully.   Hogan garnered the win, working 5 strong innings, only allowing 2 hits. 

Offensively, James Island got on the board in the 3rd with a 2 out walk from Hayes Snow, followed by a Julius Reynolds double to left.  The Trojans would build their lead in the 4th.  An RBI ground out from Austin Dukes was followed by a 2 out RBI single from Noah Brown.

Owen French worked the final 2 innings, striking out 4, securing the save.  For the week the Trojans finished 1-1-1 and begin to look toward their regular season.

Ashley Ridge pitching struckout 6, while only walking 2 on the day.  The loss pushed Swamp Foxes to 0-3 for the event.

Semi-Final Game

Stratford – 2                     Lugoff-Elgin – 6

The Demons offense got off to a quick start again posted 2 runs in each of their 1st two at-bats, staking Lugoff-Elgin to the 4-1 lead.  Down 5-1 in the 6th, Stratford would mount some pressure putting across one run, but the Demons quickly answered and secured the 6-1 win.

Keaton Harrelson worked 4 spectacular innings, surrendering just 2 walks while striking out 7.  Max Branham closed the game with 2 innings of work.

Offensively, Cobe Evans keyed the Demons’ attack with 3 hits, scoring 2 runs.  Thomas Purcell led the Knights at the plate with 2 hits, a double and triple, scoring both of Stratford’s runs.

With the win, Lugoff-Elgin advanced to the Shipyard / PBR Showdown Championship game where they faced off with Legion Collegiate Academy.

Championship Game

Lugoff-Elgin – 11             Legion Collegiate – 1

The Demons of Lugoff-Elgin would enter their final two at-bats, down 1-0 to Legion Collegiate.  But, staying true to what we have seen throughout the Shipyard/PBR Showdown, the Demons were due to explode offensively, posting 11 runs in the 6th and 7th innings to win the 2021 preseason tournament.

With one out in the 6th, Witt Branham sent a SAC Fly to centerfield, scoring Banks Munn, and tying the game.  The next pitch, with runners on 1st and 3rd, Cobe Evans doubled to left, giving the Demons their lead.  Lugoff-Elgin would then work 6 walks and two singles to build to a 9-1 lead heading to the bottom of the 6th.

On the mound, Will Morris worked 3.2 innings for the Demons, surrendering just 4 hits and 1 run, before turning the game over to Reed Goff.   In Goff’s 2nd appearance of the weekend, he earned the win going 3.1 innings of 1 hit baseball.

Legion Collegiate starter Colby Guy worked into the 6th, leaving the game while still ahead, but ultimately being charged with the loss as his inherited base runners were allowed to score.  Guy threw 5.1 innings striking out 4.
