Preseason All-State: Positional Data Dive (Underclass)

Utah Operations

On Saturday, February 24th, the Prep Baseball Utah staff hosted the annual Invite-Only Utah Preseason All-State at Pine View High School in St. George, Utah. This event featured over 100 prospects from the 2024 - 2028 classes and allowed our staff an opportunity to get an in-depth look at the players in attendance ahead of the high school season, as well as collect updated metrics and data on each player utilizing our series of tech partners.

This event has become a staple in Prep Baseball Utah's calendar and continues to feature some of the top upperclass prospects, both committed and uncommitted, as well as a large crop of high-end underclassmen who will be on the scene for years to come. The Utah Preseason All-State allows our staff to identify players early on in the year who deserve invites to some of our National/Regional Events such as the Future Games, Senior Future Games, Junior Future Games, West Coast ProCase and West Coast Games.

Earlier this week, we broke down the top measurable data performers from the event with our Underclass Statistical Analysis and Underclass Pitching Data Dive.  Now, we will take a further in-depth look at the top positional players with the help of our tech partnerships, broken down by the categories down below:

Traditionally, the 60-yard dash has been the in-event standard to help measure a player's speed tool. While the measurement still has its utility, the 10-yard split has started to become more and more applicable in determining the player's burst and reaction time in-game, whether that's in the outfield or on the basepaths.

The Edge Score is a comprehensive score out of 100 that takes the core-six visual skills into account, providing athletes, parents, coaches and scouts with a benchmark number for assessing an athlete’s overall visual ability. In general the higher the Edge Score, the higher chance of athletic success. Think of the Edge Score as the 'Sixth Metric' in the standard Five-Tools that make up a ball player.

The average Edge Score for the 2020 MLB Draft Class was 79.3 (of hitters who completed a Vizual Edge test). MLB players we've worked with typically show stronger scores, with elite hitters scoring consistently above 87.0 on their Edge Score.
