Austin Sharp
Alabama Scouting Director

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in the Jacksonville/Oxford/Montgomery area at the AISA or AHSAA state championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason top-10 rankings in each AHSAA classification.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state.

Each week we will be releasing our Players of the Week, updating the top-10 ranks in each AHSAA classification, as well updating our Power 25 overall rankings. One thing, especially, you don’t want to miss are our scheduled podcasts with guests from across the state, as well as the recaps and previews of the big games we’re covering.

*Please note the information has been gathered from head coaches across the state, based on their replies to the questionnaire we distributed over this offseason.

TEAM OUTLOOK

The Cleburne County Tigers enter the 2024 season with high hopes of continuing their recent success in Class 4A, as they put together a 20-win season last spring and reached the playoffs after missing the postseason the year prior. This season, the Tigers return a host of talented returners as expectations continue to climb with aspriations of continuing their momentum in 2024.

The Tigers enjoyed a stellar regular season inside Class 4A a season ago, which included the aforementioend 20 wins and finishing as the runner-up in their area. They hit the road in the 1st round of the playoffs and traveled to Brooks, and were unfortunately eliminated in two games to close their season with a 20-5 record. Using six positional starters and four pitchers returning who played important roles last spring and earned postseason accoloades, the Tigers look once again to be built for another strong season on paper. LHP/1B Jayson Deese (Central Alabama CC, 2024) returns as one of their leaders on both sides of the ball, as he was named the All Tri-County Player of the Year in addition to the All-Area team. RHP/3B Jake Dingler (2024) is another important returners who is expected to play football at the collegiate level, but is coming off a junior season where he was named to the All Tri-County 1st team and All-Area team. OF/RHP Nolan Wright (2024), SS/RHP Kannon Robertson (Peru State College, 2024), INF Jake Littleton (2024), and C Nate Adams (2024) are four more seniors that are expected to build off of last season's success, and were all named to the All Tri-County team. Looking at the junior class, OF Hunter Gore (2025), INF/RHP Gabe Wickersham (2025), and RHP Jacob Pentacost (2025) should all play pivotal roles in a variety of ways in order for the Tigers to have the type of success they want. While there are plenty of upperclassmen returning to this year's roster, younger players inside the program like UTL/RHP Asher Brown (2027), 1B Matthew Wilson (2027), and OF Silas Hunt (2027) are all looking to make a sizable impact at the varsity level this spring for the Tigers and are names to watch for this spring.

There's plenty to be excited about for the Tigers this spring, as they look to be a well-rounded team on paper with no glaring weaknesses. They'll compete in Area 9 against Anniston, Jacksonville, and White Plains for a berth in the playoffs at the end of the regular season. Look for Cleburne County to once again be knocking on the door of the playoffs at the end of the season in Class 4A in 2024.
