Alabama HS Team Preview: Trinity Presbyterian Wildcats

Austin Sharp
Alabama Scouting Director

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in the Jacksonville/Oxford/Montgomery area at the AISA or AHSAA state championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason top-10 rankings in each AHSAA classification.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state.

Each week we will be releasing our Players of the Week, updating the top-10 ranks in each AHSAA classification, as well updating our Power 25 overall rankings. One thing, especially, you don’t want to miss are our scheduled podcasts with guests from across the state, as well as the recaps and previews of the big games we’re covering.

*Please note the information has been gathered from head coaches across the state, based on their replies to the questionnaire we distributed over this offseason.

TEAM OUTLOOK

The Trinity Presbyterian Wildcats are coming off another noteworthy season in 2023, where they reached the Elite 8 in Class 4A after winning the state championship the year prior. The Wildcats have a new head coach at the helm this spring and plenty of returning talent to be in the mix once again in Class 4A in 2024.

The Wildcats struggled out of the gate bit in 2023, dropping their first five games and starting 3-7 after 10 games. They quickly responded with a dominant middle part of the regular season and were riding an impressive winning streak into the playoffs, and kept it going by sweeping their first two series against Northside and Satsuma. Matching up against a talented UMS-Wright club in the Elite 8, the Wildcats were unfortunately eliminated by scores of 4-1 and 4-2 to close their season with a 25-12 record. Returning six positional starters and five pitchers this spring, the Wildcats look primed for another strong run in the Class 4A playoffs. RHP/SS Fleming Hall (Auburn, 2025) should be the unquestioned ace on the piching staff using a low-90's fastball, and should also be one of their top hitters in the lineup with mutliple years of experience at the varsity level. RHP/OF Walker McClinton (2024), INF/RHP Brady Rascoll (2024), and C Ross Sanders (2024) are three more returning starters who bring back plenty of experience to their senior seasons. Most played a strong role during their state title run two years ago, and also helped lead the way last season. OF/RHP Xavier Boswell (2025), OF/RHP Brady Bennett (2025), and INF Cooper Bernier (2025) also bring back some experience and leadership to this program and are looking to take the next step this spring and inherit larger roles. A couple of underclassmen to watch for this spring are UTL/RHP Luke Hall (2026) and C/INF Mason Hawkins (2026), both of which have a chance to step in a compete for roles and playing time as sophomores this season.

The Wildcats have consistently been one of the top programs in Class 4A over the past decade, and they once again look to be a quality contender in a deep Class 4A this spring. They'll compete in Area 4 against B.T. Washington, Bullock County, LAMP, and Montgomery Catholic for a berth in the playoffs at the end of the regular season. Trinity Presbyterian begins the season at No. 5 in the Class 4A Top-10, and will aim to finish at the top spot in Class 4A in 2024.
