The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in the Jacksonville/Oxford/Montgomery area at the AISA or AHSAA state championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason top-10 rankings in each AHSAA classification.

Each week we will be releasing our Players of the Week, updating the top-10 ranks in each AHSAA classification, as well updating our Power 25 overall rankings. One thing, especially, you don’t want to miss are our scheduled podcasts with guests from across the state, as well as the recaps and previews of the big games we’re covering.

TEAM OUTLOOK

The Douglas Eagles enter the 2024 season hoping to build off of last season, where they recorded a winning record, but missed the playoffs in Class 5A unfortunately. From that team, however, there are some talented familiar faces returning this spring and have hopes of helping this program take the next step.

The Eagles look primed for a strong season this spring and have the potential to take a big leap forward in Class 5A. Looking at all of the returners from a season ago, the Eagles return a total of eight positional starters and five pitchers who saw time on the mound last spring. This coaching staff believes that those two factors should be one of their main strengths as a team with a healthy amount of returners. A few of those familiar faces and top returners from last season's team are RHP Andy Cathey (2024), RHP/OF Cason Walls (2025), OF/C Brock Walls (2025), and RHP/3B Bentley Smith (2028). All four of these players played a vital role in last year's season and should only continue to get better this spring. A few other players who looked poised to step into larger roles for the Eagles this spring are OF Landon Centers (2024), C Landon Cooper (2024), and 1B Kash Moultrie (2025). These three players are upperclassmen who have the talent to make an impact this spring, while SS Baker Lyles (2028) is one of the top underclassmen inside this program and should play a role at the varsity level this spring. 

The Eagles have been hard at work this off-season, and are eager to hit the diamond in just a couple short weeks and prove they're ready to seize the opportunity this spring. They'll compete in Area 15 against Arab, Scottsboro, and Guntersville for a berth in the playoffs at the end of the regular season. Douglas has the returning talent to be a competitive group this spring, and will look to be in the thick of their area at the end of the season in Class 5A in 2024.
