New Episode LIVE now! At The Yard Podcast

CHABOT COLLEGE, HAYWARD (CA) - The NorCal Uncommitted Games took place at Chabot College on October 8th, featuring nearly 70 uncommitted players hoping to soon change their commitment status. The event consisted of typical showcase style workout that included running the 60 (with 10 and 30 yard splits), a showcase defensive workout followed by batting evaluation, and then there were two 9-10 inning games, with each position player getting no fewer than three plate apperances and primary pitchers going two innings (max of 10 hitters).

Quick Hits is a recap of some of the top performances that initially stood out to us. It is not a ranking or top prospect list. Additional content including statistical leaders is available now on the California Scout Blog, and more content will continue to flow in to that blog.

QUICK HITS

NorCal Uncommitted Games

Keisen Hayden

Class of 2024 / LHP

Player Information

  • Graduating Class: 2024
  • Primary Position: LHP
    Secondary Position: OF
  • High School: Bear River
    State: CA
  • Summer Team: Athlete 911
  • Height: 6-2
    Weight: 180lbs
  • Bat/Throw: L/L

Quick Hits

Clean arm action which works easily and fluidly. Given that it's late in the year, his peak velocity (86 mph) was a little down from what we've seen previously (T89), so not a concern. Flashes the type of spin (T2347) to continue to project the FB to greater heights, presently throws both a CB and SL though they are similar and perhaps featuring just one could be a good thing. We like the CB between the two. Starting to use the CHG more in each outing we see and with continual usage it's going to develop into an above average pitch.

Antonio Nordman

Class of 2024 / RHP

Player Information

  • Graduating Class: 2024
  • Primary Position: RHP
    Secondary Position: OF
  • High School: Berkeley
    State: CA
  • Height: 6-3
    Weight: 185lbs
  • Bat/Throw: R/R

Quick Hits

Previously had slipped under our radar, but Nordman is absolutely one to see this coming spring, not just for college coaches. The body checks the proper boxes, the raw numbers are strong, with a FB that sat 89-90 (T91 a few times) with max spin to continue to project more from the heater (T2396). Slider is of the bigger shape variety (75-77 mph) with enough bite to be both a swing and miss pitch or used to lock up hitters. It's the CHG that very well could be the seperator for him vs other RHPs as he let loose a couple that were legit 'pull the string' type of pitches. Sure there was some inconsistency in his releases of the CHG, but the flashes were impressive. Quick high leg lift provides some deception in the delivery.

Dominic Poole

Class of 2024 / C

Player Information

  • Graduating Class: 2024
  • Primary Position: C
    Secondary Position: OF
  • High School: Leland
    State: CA
  • Summer Team: CCB Elite
  • Height: 5-11
    Weight: 165lbs
  • Bat/Throw: R/R

Quick Hits

The raw tools possessed by Poole have been a reason to keep him on the radar. He's also catcher with ability to be an above average defensive outfielder. Given that the catcher position is one that college staffs all have unique profiles they prefer, catchers can find it challenging to find a home (also because there are always more good catchers than there are spots available on rosters). With his two way profile and arm/run talent, Poole stands out. The 7.12 he ran wasn't the fastest we've seen, but good for a catcher and fits a corner OF profile. The 89 mph OF arm and 78 mph catcher arm are both above average. His pops can get more consistent but he's flashed times that are good. The 92.4 max EV in BP & 70.3 mph bat speed max translated to the game when he top-handed a high FB into the LCF gap.

Jake Redding

Class of 2024 / C

Player Information

  • Graduating Class: 2024
  • Primary Position: C
    Secondary Position: 3B
  • High School: Lincoln
    State: CA
  • Summer Team: KC Royals Scout / Athlete911
  • Height: 6-3
    Weight: 217.6lbs
  • Bat/Throw: R/R

Quick Hits

From the first time we saw Redding at an event, we've been firmly in his corner. What we saw early on, big arm, big bat talent, USABLE bat talent, and a love/enthusiasm for the game, all has remained intact and continues to grow. Physical at 6-foot-3, 210-lbs, he's shown agility to block at no less than an average level. The arm and catch/throw skills sync up very well, with 79-80 mph arm strength and ability to pop as low as 2.00, if not better at times, along with accuracy. He's a big target behind the plate with strong soft hands. Offensively, he's as consistent as any player in the 2024 class in the area in getting to his hitting tools. The ball jumps off the bat (97-99 max EVs, 75.7 max bat speed) and we've lost count of the number of extra base hits and hard outs he's hit to ALL fields. For good measure he went deep to CF in the game at this event.

Caden Roth

Class of 2024 / RHP

Player Information

  • Graduating Class: 2024
  • Primary Position: RHP
  • High School: Foothill
    State: CA
  • Summer Team: FCA
  • Height: 6-7
    Weight: 190lbs
  • Bat/Throw: R/R

Quick Hits

Tall pitchers immediately draw a scout's eyes which then is always followed by curiousity if they have body control and can repeat their deliveries, because that is where the projectability starts. Roth, at 6-foot-7, 190-lbs, has the body control of a smaller bodied pitcher which adds mightily to his future projection. The arm action is also repeatable and simple, with a compact pocket-path. Stays behind his body well, finishes with balance and consistent release. The FB was 84-86 mph (T2305 spin) with strong horizontal movement numbers (17.3 avg) and excellent spin efficiency numbers (97% avg). Has ability to land the CB (70-74) and can use the CHG (73-75) to help the FB play up a bit. The CHG has similar IVB to the FB, nearly identical release height, and a little less HM.
