The Prep Baseball Report MN Underclass Prospect Games event took place on Sunday, June 16, 2019. The event was held at the University of St. Thomas. The event featured prospects from the 2021 & 2022 grad classes; and included many breakout performances from this year's participants. Players showcased their talents in front of our scouting staff and college coaches in attendance. Thank you to the players, parents, my staff; along with the staff at the University of St. Thomas for such a great event.

There were a number of great individual performances this year at the PBR MN Underclass Prospect Games.

As we drill down into the statistics:

+    32 players ran sub-7.2 60's.
+    34 players recorded 85+ mph exit velocities
+    17 players recorded 80+ mph infield throws
+    10 players recorded 80+ mph outfield throws
+    9 catchers recorded 70+ mph throws to second base
+    9 catchers recorded sub-2.1 pop times
+    33 pitchers were 80+ mph on the mound

catcher evaluations (alpa)

Drew Berkland, C, Wayzata, 2022
5-foot-11, 175-pound right-handed hitting catcher.  7.15 runner.  Slightly open stance with high handset.  Small leg lift and hands load back.  Slight arm bar.  Lower half gets through swing well.  Mid/pull approach with line drive contact.  Flashes pop in barrel with consistent contact.  90 mph exit velocity.  C- Balanced and athletic setup.  Receives well with smooth glove.  Works ball into zone.  Average feet with good direction.  Clean exchange with 2.00-2.08 pop times with 76 mph arm strength.

Jonah Dawson, OF/C, Burnsville, 2022
5-foot-8, 140-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. 7.41 runner.  Open stance with relaxed handset.  Strides to square with small hand load.  Swing works down to contact.  Mid/pull approach with mainly fly ball contact.  Inconsistent barrel contact.  78 mph exit velocity.  C- Lower balanced stance.  Average receiver and good glove side.  Blocks and keep ball in front.  Average foot work and good direction on throws.  Clean exchange with 2.08-2.19 pop times.  69 mph arm strength.  OF- Average feet and sits back to field.  Glove can be stiff.  76 mph arm strength with below average carry and accuracy.

Stephen Golden, C, Totino Grace, 2021
5-foot-11, 178-pound left-handed hitting catcher.  7.02 runner.  Tall open stance with high handset.  Strides to square and hands load back.  Average hands.  Pull approach with ground ball and line drive contact.  Average barrel contact with 83 mph exit velocity.  C- Angled stance and sits high at times.  Moves well laterally.  Receives well glove side and can get stiff on other side of body.  Longer footwork with average exchange.  2.09-2.20 pop times with 73 mph arm strength. 

Zakary Goodwin, C, Roseville, 2022
5-foot-9, 145-pound left-handed hitting catcher. 7.37 runner.  Lower set wide base.  Body load with small leg lift to start.  Easy hands with some stiffness in finish.  Swing plane produces line drive contact.  Consistent barrel with 87 mph exit velocity.  C- Athletic stance and movements.  Smooth glove and quiet when receiving.  Shows flexibility when blocking.  Clean exchange on throws with longer footwork at times.  2.00-2.01 pop times with 73 mph arm strength.  IF- Active feet and moves well to field.  Good glove and fields ball out in front.  81 mph arm strength with good accuracy and average carry.

Kyle Hvidsten, RHP/C, Jordan, 2022
5-foot-11, 210-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player.  7.19 runner.  Open stance with relaxed hands.  Body load and strides to square.  Hands load back with slight arm bar at times.  Flashes bat speed.  Gap to Gap approach with line drive and fly ball contact.  Strength in barrel with good contact.  96 mph exit velocity.  C- Lower athletic stance.  Average receiver with stiff hands at times.  Move wells to block.  Feet can be long with misdirection on throws.  Longer exchange with short arm action.  2.14-2.22 pop times with 71 mph arm strength.  On mound- Balanced start into slow tempo delivery.  Good direction down mound with shorter stride.  Throws from a ¾ arm slot.  Fastball has slight arm side run at 79-82 mph.  Curveball has 11/5 break with average shape and spin thrown at 69-72 mph.  Change-up is straight and thrown with good arm speed at 69-71 mph.

Benjamin Irsfeld, C/RHP, Sioux Falls Roosevelt (SD), 2022
5-foot-8, 150-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.50 runner.  Squared athletic stance with high handset.  Leg lift and hands load down. Mid/pull approach with mainly line drive contact.  Average barrel contact with 79 mph exit velocity.  C- Angled athletic stance.  Good glove and stays behind ball.  Moves well to block.  Average feet with good direction on throws.  Good exchange with quick release.  2.01-2.10 pop times with 73 mph arm strength.  IF- Active feet.  Works around ball to field.  Average hands and makes routine play.  73 mph arm strength with good carry and accuracy.  On mound- Smaller framer.  Good balance and tempo through delivery.  Higher leg lift and lands slightly across body.  Throws from a ¾ arm slot with a shorter arm action.  Fastball is straight and heavy at times at 77-80 mph.  Curveball has 11/4 break with average spin thrown at 65-69 mph.  Change-up has fade action at 70-72 mph.

Drew Lingen, C/RHP, Rochester John Marshall, 2021
6-foot-2, 190-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.43 runner.  Good size and present strength.  Squared stance with weight slightly back.  Small and simple load.  Gap to gap approach with line drive and fly ball contact.  Flashes pull pop with consistent barrel contact.  88 mph exit velocity.  C- Bigger target.  Low balanced setup.  Quiet glove with ability to hold pitches.  Longer footwork with good direction on throws.  Clean exchange with 2.01-2.15 pop times and 77 mph arm strength.  On mound- Solid frame. Good tempo through delivery.  Lands across and falls off glove side.  Throws from a ¾ arm slot with a shorter arm action at times.  Fastball has slight run action at 83-85 mph topping at 88 mph.  Curveball is more slider action and has 10/4 late break with small shape at 69-71 mph. 

Miken Miller, C, Rogers, 2022
5-foot-10, 150-pound left-handed hitting catcher. 7.42 runner.  Athletic upright and open stance.  Leg lift trigger with rhythm in load.  Lands square and balanced.  Mid/pull approach with easy swing that creates back spin.  Consistent line drive contact with average barrel.  86 mph exit velocity.  C- Athletic setup with good movements.  Receives well and moves well to block.  Quicker feet and good direction on throws.  Clean exchange with quick release.  Shorter arm action.  1.98-2.03 pop times with 74 mph arm strength.

Will Rogers, C, Mounds View, 2021
6-foot, 190-pound right-handed hitting catcher.  Ranked #386 overall in 2021 PBR Rankings.  6.96 runner.  Athletic physical presence.  Squared and balance setup.  Toe tap trigger and small hand load.  Mid/pull approach with hardline drive contact.  Pull pop with strength in barrel and consistent contact.  94 mph exit velocity.  C- Athletic setup with visible strength.  Receives well with ability to hold pitches.  Blocks well and works hard behind plate.  Good footwork with clean and quick exchange.  1.85-1.89 pop times with 80 mph arm strength.

Ben Taxdahl, RHP/C, St. Thomas Academy (MN), 2021
6-foot-1, 195-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player.  7.08 runner.  Open and slightly crouched stance.  Leg lift trigger and hands load down.  Aggressive swing.  Mid/pull approach with line drive and fly ball contact.  Flashes pull pop with average barrel contact.  92 mph exit velocity.  C- Angled athletic stance.  Average receiver and holds pitches in zone.  Moves well to block and show flexibility.  Long footwork with good direction on throws.  Clean exchange with long arm action.  2.10-2.19 pop times with 79 mph arm strength.  On mound- Good frame.  Threw from stretch.  Repeats delivery well with good direction.  Aggressive down mound.  Throws from a lower ¾ arm slot with a longer arm action.  Fastball has varying action thrown at 82-85 mph.  Curveball has 11/5 break with average shape and good spin at 77-79 mph.
