A pitching battle between Apex RHP Cranz Smelcer and Broughton RHP Sam Harris ended on an unearned run by Apex in the top of the seventh on a cold night at Broughton HS. Smelcer went six hitless innings with 10 strikeouts. Harris matched, firing 5 hitless innings with 7 strikeouts.

Smelcer and Sophomore Jace Shoffner, combined to throw a no-hitter in the 7 inning affair. With Smelcer’s day done, Apex loaded the bases on a hit, HBP, and intentional BB, with one out. A ground ball to 3B was thrown home for the 2nd out and in trying to turn the double play, the ball got away at 1B, scoring Adrian Gonzalez from 2B.  Shoffner worked a perfect 7th to claim the save and preserve the no-hitter.

Sam Harris , RHP, Broughton HS, 2025

NC State commit. Thin, 6-foot, 175 pound frame. Good athlete. Repeats the delivery. Strike thrower. Does the little things that lead to wins. Fielded his position well and covered first base on two occasions showing off his athleticism on tough plays. Great feel for his breaking balls and his changeup. Several strikeouts on his CH that dropped out of the zone with late movement. Slider at
