By Jacob Gill
Pennsylvania Assistant Director of Scouting

The summer schedule of PBR events in Pennsylvania continued this week with the 2016 Eastern PA Top College Prospect Showcase on June 29. Nearly 50 prospects from four states gathered to showcase their abilities at MapleZone Sports Village in Aston, PA. Today we continue our analysis of the prospects in attendance by taking a look at the prospects that participated in the Class of 2018.

Quinn Buffington, OF/1B, Camp Hill
6-foot, 175-pound right-handed hitter with muscular, athletic build. Gets his hands to a good launch point and has some strength in his frame. Starts from an open, wide stance and stays open, creating spin and a swing that's geared pullside. Ran a 6.89 60-yard dash and posted 81 mph exit velocity. Recorded 81 mph arm strength from the outfield and 75 mph from first base. Outfield arm doesn't play the way it could due to a really closed landing that limits his extension and causes his throws to tail. On the infield, he showed solid feet and hands, along with some athleticism.

Carson Fowler, OF/LHP, Mount Pleasant (DE)
5-foot-9, 150-pound left-handed hitter. Starts from a slightly open stance and strides slightly closed. Repeats his swing, has good bat speed, and showed an ability to consistently barrel the baseball during his BP round. Ran a 7.01 60-yard dash; posted 82 mph exit velocity and 89 mph arm strength with some skip from the outfield. On the mound, he incorporates a big sideways rocker into a rhythmic delivery and pitches out of a high three-quarter slot. Fastball sat 77-79, while curveball at 67-69 flashed solid three-quarter tilt, and he also showcased a split-grip change-up at 70-71 that he tended to bury..

Royce Frazier, IF, Notre Dame East Stroudsburg
5-foot-10, 145-pound right-handed hitter. Starts from an upright, slightly open stance and strides to square. Flashes some bat speed, while tending to hook around the baseball. Ran a 7.19 60-yard dash and posted 73 mph exit velocity. Showed a solid glovehand defensively, while arm slot and 77 mph arm strength currently project him as a second baseman down the road.

Joseph Gorla, IF, Perkiomen Valley
6-foot-2, 195-pound right-handed hitter. Starts from a slightly open stance in an unbalanced squat (left leg more extended than right) and strides to slightly closed. Barrel lagged behind hands through zone during his BP round, leading to lots of balls sliced  the opposite way. Ran a 7.34 60-yard dash and posted 83 mph exit velocity. Defensively, he showed a solid glovehand and accurate 85 mph arm strength across the diamond.

Joe Janick, 1B/C, Downingtown East
Strong 6-foot-1, 205-pound right-handed hitter. Starts from an open stance and strides to slightly open. Some cast to his hands at launch, but his hands work and he displays good balance. Posted a 90 mph exit velocity and ran a 7.45 60-yard dash. Recorded 70 mph arm strength at first base and 68 mph velocity from the crouch (with pop times of 2.25-2.41). All measureables may have been hampered by him being in the middle of football workouts. Showed a solid skillset at first base, plus decent mobility behind the dish for someone with a boxy frame.

Justen Lucas, C/3B, West Chester Henderson
5-foot-11, 165-pound right-handed hitter. Hit from a slightly closed stance and used all field during his BP round. Barrel wrap creates some length and loop to swing path. Ran a 7.27 60-yard dash and posted 80 mph exit velocity. Showed 71 mph arm strength from the crouch and 74 mph from third base. Recorded pop times of 2.37-2.44, which will improve as he learns to sync his lower body to be on time with his exchange.

Zackary Murray, RHP, Hughesville
6-foot-2, 185-pounder repeats a clean delivery and pitches out of an over-the-top slot. Fastball sat 77-79 with occasional cut action. Best secondary pitch was a solid change-up at 73-74 with good sink and occasional fade. Also showed a curveball at 64-66 that lacked bite when elevated, but flashed solid 12/6 action when down in the zone.

Bryan Weinstein, OF/1B, Quakertown Community
5-foot-9, 140-pound left-handed hitter. Starts from a square stance with flared elbows and strides closed. Inside-out approach, eyes stay level, and would benefit from additional strength. Ran a 7.16 60-yard dash; posted 76 mph exit velocity and accurate 78 mph arm strength from the outfield.

Michael Yates, RHP/OF, Pocono Mountain East
Raw 6-foot, 175-pounder. Stop-and-start wind-up, shows number on back to the hitter, and pitching out of a high three-quarter slot. Some front arm swim can pull his top half off line and lead to over rotation around his front let, limiting ability to get his arm out front. FB sat 84-85 with occasional cut or sink. Curveball at 73-75 and slider at 77-78 had limited action due to lack of extension. Split-grip change-up at 77-78 had occasional 1-plane fade. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts open and strides to slightly open. His swing is stiff, but strong, while he casts his hands and hit virtually everything to the pullside during his BP round. Ran a 7.10 60-yard dash; posted 85 mph exit velocity and 90 mph arm strength from the outfield.
