Walters is Heading to Slippery Rock

Tyler WaltersThe Class of 2014 is extremely deep with catchers as evidenced by 18 backstops filling the top 105 spots in the rankings. With Tyler Walters (Saegertown HS, No. 34 in PA and No. 266 in PBR combined rankings) announcing his verbal commitment to Slippery Rock University yesterday the number of uncommitted catchers in this group is now down to six.

Walters had been fielding offers for some time and in the end his decision came down to four programs. "I was also considering Penn State, Seton Hill and Millersville. I decided on Slippery Rock because I love the school, the coaching staff and the baseball team. Slippery Rock really fits all of my needs and keeps me close to home in a very competitive conference."

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound catcher is one of the top hitters in the state. He has put up prolific numbers for Saegertown High School. Walters has shown the ability to hit for power and to drive in runs, but also has demonstrated the ability to use all fields and to hit for average. He has worked hard to improve his foot speed (7.29 60-yard dash) and continues to improve defensively. He joins fellow District 10 catcher Christian Porterfield (West Middlesex HS), ranked No. 33 in PA, who announced his commitment to Slippery Rock earlier this fall.

Walters has played the past two falls with the Allegheny Pirates program, ending his run with a wood bat home run off the scoreboard 10 days ago at Pitt. He has had previous success at Slippery Rock, having played there a number of times in high school playoff games as well as with the Allegheny Pirates. "The Slippery Rock coaches first saw me as a freshman in a District 10 playoff game on their campus. They have seen me an endless number of times since then and have always shown a heavy interest in me as an athlete. They expect me to come in and make an immediate impact on their program both offensively and defensively."

Top Ranked Catchers still available

Two catchers in the top 15 spots in the rankings remain uncommitted. Dylan Evert (Bristol HS, No. 9 in PA and No. 79 in the PBR combined rankings) is likely to be the next to announce his commitment. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound prospect will be playing in the WWBA World Championship in Jupiter, Florida this week and could make a final decision shortly after.

Red Lion Area C/3B Drew Landis also remains uncommitted. Landis, ranked No. 14 in PA and No. 111 in the PBR combined rankings, has been making visits for several months and could also make an announcement in the near future.
