WEATHERFORD, TX - Over the last weekend of September, PBR Texas hosted its Inaugural Texas State Games at Weatherford College. It was a 3 day event that consisted of a showcase day and two days of gameplay.  The rosters were filled with some of the best players in Texas from the 2023-2026 Classes.

The event drew over 20 different colleges, including 15+ Division 1 schools.  We look forward to growing this event into the premier Fall event in the Lone Star State. 

Today we are looking at uncommitted 2023's that stood out over the three day event.

Uncommitted 2023 Position Players

Ben Brooks OF / Birdville, TX / 2023 One of the big winners for me on the weekend was Brooks.  The athletic outfielder from Birdville looked the part of a top of the order table setter who can stick in center.  He ran a 6.66 60 and threw 87 from the outfield showing the necessary tools to stay in centerfield.  At the plate, Brooks showed solid bat speed and a line drive approach at the plate. His barrel stayed in the zone for a long time allowing him to spray the ball to all parts of the field. He had multiple hits in the game and showed the ability to hit high end pitching.  Brooks should garner a lot of attention from college coaches as he looks like one of the uncommitted outfielders in the state for the 2023 class.

Blake Martinez OF / 1B / Allen, TX / 2023 Another toolsy outfielder from the metroplex, Martinez got to show off his skills on both sides of the ball.  He ran a 6.81 60 showing good speed and has been up to 91 from the OF.  He got to show off his arm during gameplay throwing a runner out at the plate.  The LHH from Allen has above average Blast numbers, showing good speed and really good rotational acceleration. During BP he had a max exit velo of 96.5, and showed power potential from the left side.  Martinez has all the tools to be an impact player at the next level.

Aiden Bennett SS / 3B / Westlake, TX / 2023 Bennett was rock solid all weekend showing high baseball IQ and the ability to get the barrel to the baseball.  Bennett ran a 7.06, but plays faster than that thanks to his first step and instincts.  He is fundamentally sound with the glove making every play look routine. During the gameplay Bennett got off multiple good swings hitting line drives all over the field.  Bennett has a projectable frame and should continue to get stronger which will continue to add power to the profile.  Bennett is a winner and a leader on the field and will be a great find for a college.

Zac Daigre 2B / OF / Concordia Lutheran, TX / 2023 Rankings  StateRank: 128 / POS: 2 The bouncy athlete from Houston always performs when the PBR Texas staff watches him.  The versatile senior started his weekend running a 6.76 60. He shows good actions in the Outfield and on the dirt.  He profiles best as a guy that can play all over the field. He could play Center, Left, 2nd or 3rd.  At the plate, Daigre has good blast numbers with above average bat speed and rotational acceleration. He has a line drive approach and uses the whole field to his advantage. His game is to get on base and force the issue on the bases.  Daigre plays with a lot of energy and makes the guys around him better.

Carter Aldmon 2B / SS / Bridgeland, TX / 2023 I got to watch Aldmon multiple times this fall, and he is just a ballplayer.  He does everything well and has two way potential.  In the field, Carter can play all 3 infield spots with a strong arm that can get up into the upper 80’s across the diamond.  He shows a good first step.  He profiles best at 2nd or 3rd most likely in college, but because of his high baseball IQ could play short as well.  At the plate, the LHH has a line drive approach and drove the ball with authority during bp.  He had a max exit velo of 92. He uses a slight leg kick to get the swing going and as he gets stronger could develop some pull side power.  On the mound, Aldmon shows some arm strength and potential for being a predominant infielder.  He got his fastball up to 87.7 and showed some ASR.  His best offspeed was a low 70’s curveball that got up to 2443 RPM.  He also throws a mid 70’s CH.  Aldlmon does a lot of things well and brings a lot of value to a college program.

 

 

Uncommitted 2023 Pitchers

Jared White RHP / 1B / Southlake Carroll, TX / 2023 Rankings  StateRank: 147 / POS: 43 There was a lot of excitement to see the one time Razorback commit. He hasn’t thrown much the past couple years because of injury, but he is back now and gets better every time he steps on the mound. The 6’2 righty was up to 87.6 (he has been up to 90 this fall), his command wasn’t quite as sharp in this outing, but normally he has some of the best FB command in the area. He featured a curveball that had good shape and depth. He showed the ability to drop it in for a strike or bury it for swing and miss. He also features a change up that he throws with good arm speed and shows the ability to kill spin on the pitch. White is an elite strike thrower who knows how to pitch, who works with great pace and tempo.  I expect all the stuff to tick up in the spring as he continues to get stronger and get more time on the mound.

David Hyde RHP / OF / Wylie, TX / 2023 Rankings  StateRank: 144 / POS: 42 Hyde is another uncommitted Senior that has worked his back from injury.  The Sr. from Wylie had a good outing and showed a lot of athleticism on the mound. He is an easy mover down the mound and does a good job of using his lower half.  His fastball topped out at 87.1 and I expect that number to continue to climb. He showed the ability to sink the pitch, making it difficult to square up.  He also featured a mid 70’s curveball that came out of the same window as his fastball.  Hyde missed a lot of time, but he is back to 100% now, and with the athleticism he shows on the mound, I expect a big spring from him.

Rowdy Miller RHP / OF / Boerne Champion , TX / 2023 Rankings  StateRank: 150 / POS: 45 The other Sr. arm who was coming back from injury was Miller, and the central Texas product looks close to being all the way back. Miller’s fastball peaked at 89.1, and should continue to rise as he continues to build back up.  His fastball plays nicely at the top of the zone with an above average Hop+ score.  He pairs that pitch with a breaking ball that he throws from the same slot as his fastball. The breaker is in the mid 70’s and shows good depth.  Miller has a live arm, and I expect there will be another velo jump this spring as he gets more healthy and stronger.

Trevor Tranberg RHP / Rockwall-Heath, TX / 2023 Rankings  StateRank: 77 / POS: 24 One of the bigger uncommitted names at the State Games was Tranberg. The Rockwall Heath product has pitched a lot of big games and won a lot of big games throughout his HS and summer career.  The 6’4 210 RHP features a quality fastball that topped out at 88.3 and a max spin of 2475 RPM. He had an above avg. Sink+ score of 93, making him tough to square up in the air.  He compliments the fastball with a slider, which he throws in the 74-78 mph range and shows above avg. spin with a max of 2816 rpm.  The SL pairs nicely with the FB coming out of the same window with his short arm action. Tranberg has a good frame to continue to get stronger, and there is going to be another big velo jump.  Tranberg will have the opportunity to be the ace on another loaded Rockwall Heath team this summer.

Jack Haag RHP / OF / Lake Creek, TX / 2023 Rankings  StateRank: 115 / POS: 34 The uncommitted RHP from Houston has a strong lower half with broad shoulders and an aggressive disposition on the mound. He featured a fastball that maxed out at 88.4, showing good command of it to both sides of the plate, especially the glove side.  To complement his fastball, Haag throws a curveball, which generates weak contact and some swing and miss.  The pitch has good sweeping action, and he does a good job of starting it on the plate and getting the RHH to commit. Haag throws with intensity and has good mound presence.  He shouldn’t stay uncommitted for long.

Cole Loser RHP / OF / Denton Guyer, TX / 2023 Rankings  StateRank: 127 / POS: 38 Loser is an ultra projectable RHP from Denton who has all the tools to be a high end arm.  His fastball topped out at 87.1, showing arm side run.  With his frame, the fastball velo will continue to tick up. Loser is also extremely young for his class, so there is more projection there than most.  Loser’s best pitch is his curveball. He can really spin it, topping out at 2836 rpm’s.  It is a true swing and miss pitch that he can throw to both RH and LHH’s.  He throws it in the mid 70’s and gets quality depth on it.  He rounds out his arsenal with his Change Up. He throws it in the upper 70’s and shows the ability to kill the spin.  Loser shows flashes of dominant stuff, and as it comes all together, someone will be getting a steal.

Logan Boertje RHP / 1B / Marcus , TX / 2023 The 6’5 RHP from powerhouse FM Marcus had a quality outing and showed the ability to really pitch.  Boertje’s fb was in the low 80’s, but with the frame and some tweaks to the mechanics, I think he could take some big jumps in that area.  He shows the ability to sink it, and makes it tough to elevate. He compliments his FB with his curveball, which shows the ability to drop in for strikes and generate weak contact with the pitch.  As he gets more power with the pitch, he will be able to create more swing and miss as well.  He also throws a change up, that shows the same shape as his fastball and works well to the left handed hitter.  Boertje has pitched a lot of big innings, and I think there is some untapped velo there that someone is going to bet on and be rewarded with.

Blayne Polen RHP / OF / Aubrey, TX / 2023 The righty from Aubrey looked to be in mid-season form with his outing at State Games.  He played quarterback on Friday and then carved on Sunday.  He was an elite strike thrower with all of his pitches and generated weak contact.  His fastball topped out at 83 and showed the ability to throw it to all quadrants of the zone and sink it at the bottom.  He also throws a curveball that showed good depth in the 69-70 mph range, and he showed the ability to throw it for strikes. He also showed the ability to throw his change-up for strikes as well. There isn’t a huge velo separation between that and his fastball, but with the arm speed and movement, he does a good job of generating weak contact with it.  Polen pounds the strike zone and has room to make gains in the velocity dept.  He works with good pace and is the type of arm a defense wants to play behind.
