No. 9 Mount Carmel Breaks It Open Late, Knocks Off Montini

JOLIET, IL - Joliet Slammers Stadium hosted a a second round matchup for the Do It Stevie’s Way memorial tournament on Thursday afternoon. No. 9 Mount Carmel and Montini faced off with the Caravan of Mount Carmel ultimately breaking the game open late to defeat Montini by a score of 10-1.

The game was tight heading to the bottom of the sixth inning with Mount Carmel (23-9) coming to bat, leading 2-1. An eight run inning ensued and broke the game wide open for the Caravan. 11 of the first 12 batters reached base to open the frame. Tony Livermore had the first RBI of the frame with a slicing line-drive to left field that bounce away from the left fielder. Jake Kapers (Valparaiso commit) later scorched a two-run single back up the middle. Livermore came to the plate once again and delivered another line drive RBI single to left field. When all set and done, the Caravan held a 10-1 lead heading into the top of the seventh inning.

Starting pitcher, Christian Lucio (Eastern Kentucky commit) made quick work of the Montini lineup in the seventh inning to finish up his seven inning complete game. The right-hander scattered three hits, allowed one run, struck out six and did not walk a batter in the win. Lucio threw 86 total pitches with 66% of them landing for strikes.

Montini (18-11-1) scored their lone run in the top of the fifth inning. Freshman Antoine Harris doubled into the right-center gap to lead off the frame and later scored on a groundout by sophomore Nick Wind.

Livermore, Kapers and Diego Munoz, a Western Illinois commit, led the offensive attack for the Caravan with two hits apiece. Missouri State commit, Anthony Herron added a double to right-center field in the winning effort.

Michael Koszewski, Harris and Wind had one hit apiece for Montini.
