Prep Baseball Illinois Player of the Week: Jayden Patel

By: Pete Hamot
Assistant Director, Illinois & Wisconsin

Lake Park is off to a hot 12-1 start and they currently sit at No. 9 in our recently updated Power 25 rankings. We made mention of Jayden Patel (2024; Parkland commit) in the Lancer’s preview story as the team’s “X Factor”, and he looks to have taken that prediction and ran with it. He helped the Lancers to a perfect 6-0 record this past week, finishing at an 11-for-20 clip with one home run, one triple, four doubles, 13 RBIs, eight runs scored, four walks and six stolen bases. For his efforts, Patel has been named this week’s “Player of the Week”.

Last Saturday in a 12-5 win over South Elgin, Patel finished the day going 3-for-5 with an eye-opening three doubles, four RBIs and two runs scored to get his strong week started.

The Lancers faced off with Batavia for a three-game set of conference play starting on Monday, and Patel got things going quickly, finishing the first game 2-for-3 with an RBI, run scored and a walk in a 13-3 win. They took care of business again on Tuesday with a 17-0 victory, as Patel finished the day 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored to help contribute to the sweep.

Lake Park faced off with a strong Oak Park-River Forest club on Thursday, taking them down by the score of 8-6 behind Patel’s 1-for-3 effort with a home run, two RBIs, a run scored and a walk.

In their final game of the week, the Lancers took down Hersey 11-6 as Patel went a perfect 2-for-2 with a triple, four RBIs, a run scored and a walk.

The Parkland commit has been trending in the right direction for some time now, and he appears to be firing on all cylinders so far this spring; boasting a .476 batting average in 42 at-bats with seven doubles, two triples, two home runs, 20 RBIs and 15 runs scored.

Scouting Report

8/08/23

+ Easily one of the biggest winners from the Illinois State Games was INF Jayden Patel (Lake Park, 2024). Patel, who’s still uncommitted, stands at an upside 6-foot-2, 170-pounds with lean strength and physical upside throughout his stature. He stays short and fluid from the left side with above-average bat-to-ball skills and stays within himself. Aside from a polished showing in BP on Tuesday, Patel hit throughout the entire event in game, spraying the ball to all fields comfortably. Patel has the actions to stick on the left side of the infield in the future, and his arm strength was evident during the workout (90 mph) as well as in-game. He’s an arrow-up name from Rantoul that should take a noticeable rise in our next rankings update.

We're thankful for the POTW submissions we received from the coaches across the state. The players who garnered POTW consideration will earn a place within tomorrow's Diamond Notes story, so be on the lookout for that.
