2023 HS TEAM PREVIEW: South Central (Union Mills) Satellites

Head Coach: Zach Coulter

Class: 2A

2022 Record: 21-10

Conference (2022 Record):  6-1

Returning Starters/Pitchers: 6/8

2023 Team Strengths:

  • Strong Pitching Staff

  • Team Speed

  • Experience

Top Players: 

Outlook: South Central will be led by a very strong junior class in the spring of 2023. Junior Bradley Ferrell returns after going 5-1 with a 1.63 ERA and 84 strikeouts in 2022. Ferrell also led the Satellites in hitting, batting .480 with 7 2B, 7 3B, and 47 R as a sophomore. Junior Brayden Grass logged the most innings of any South Central arm last season, throwing 57.1 innings with a 5-5 record and 87 strikeouts. Juniors Zack Hanchar and Gavin Gross will contribute on both sides of the ball after starting last season. Juniors Jackson Bos (.325 avg) and Tommy Sullivan (.321 avg) will be impact bats in the middle of the Satellites’ lineup. Expect South Central to have a strong pitching staff and a high tempo offense that will look to run in 2023.

2023 HS TEAM PREVIEW: Delphi Community Oracles

Head Coach: Ryan Long

Class: 2A

2022 Record: 21-9

Conference (2022 Record):  13-3

Returning Starters/Pitchers: 6/5

2023 Team Strengths:

  • Varsity Experience from Sectional Championship Team

  • Pitching

  • Top of the Lineup

Top Players: 

Outlook: Delphi returns plenty of experience from their Sectional Championship team from 2022, including All State honoree Chase Long. Long hit a staggering .507 with 12 2B and 4 HR, driving in 49 runs as a junior. He’ll be joined in the middle of the lineup by fellow Senior Cole Long, who hit .312 with 5 2B and 2 HR last season. Seniors Brock Burton (.343 avg) and Carson Workinger (.284 avg / 8 XBHs) will be counted on to produce runs after starting last season. Juniors Chase Almager (.333 avg / 6 2B) and Jaxson Hixson (.412 avg) will also be impact bats for the Oracles. On the mound, expect Workinger (3-1 / 3.18 ERA), Cole Long (20 IP / 36 K’s), and Almager (4-2 / 3.41 ERA) to make up the starting rotation. Hixson and Sophomore Keigan Watts (3-0 / 3.50 ERA) should also see plenty of time on the mound for the Oracles this season.

2023 HS TEAM PREVIEW: Southwestern (Hanover) Rebels

Class: 2A

2022 Record: 20-10

Conference (2022 Record):  11-1

Returning Starters/Pitchers: 8/6

2023 Team Strengths:

  • Varsity Experience

  • Hitting

  • Depth 

Top Players: 

Outlook: Southwestern returns a large portion of the players that helped them to a 20-win season in 2022. Senior RHP/UTL Jordan DeAtley will be the glue of this year's group after he went 7-2 with a 1.96 ERA and 90 strikeouts as a junior. DeAtley also hit .379 with 10 2B and 19 SB hitting out of the leadoff spot last season, and will be counted on to be a big-time offensive contributor yet again this season. Junior C William Stockdale will be asked to be a run producer after he hit .394 with 12 2B as a sophomore. Junior Jamison Lewis will join DeAtley atop the starting rotation after he threw 30 innings last season with a 4-2 record. Lewis will likely hit near the top of the Rebels’ lineup after posting a .323 avg with 10 2B a season ago. Sophomore Adam Traylor will be the every day CF for the Rebels, along with being a contributor on the mound. Sophomore Barron Welsh will play SS after gaining starting experience as a freshman. Freshman RHP/OF Brady Cook will be an immediate impact in the outfield, as well as on the mound.

2023 HS TEAM PREVIEW: Heritage Christian Eagles

Head Coach: Dan Ambrose

Class: 2A

2022 Record: 17-10

Conference (2022 Record):  4-6

Returning Starters/Pitchers: 5/3

2023 Team Strengths:

  • Frontline Starting Pitching

  • Hitting

Top Players: 


Outlook: Heritage Christian will look to Indiana recruit Andrew Wiggins to be the face of their 2023 squad. Wiggins, a potential draft pick in July’s MLB Draft, is coming off a strong junior season where he hit .422 with 6 HR and posted a 4-1 record on the mound with a 3.62 ERA. Blake McDonald will join Wiggins atop the starting rotation, as well as in the middle of the Eagles’ lineup. Junior Ryan Williams hit .413 a season ago and will be an impact bat yet again for Heritage Christian. Expect Juniors Tyler Allemeier and Hadyn Burzynski, along with Sophomore Will Ambrose, to be everyday starters after gaining starting experience last season.

2023 HS TEAM PREVIEW: Linton-Stockton Miners

Head Coach: Jacob Harden

Class: 2A

2022 Record: 15-10-1

Conference (2022 Record):  7-0

Returning Starters/Pitchers: 6/4

2023 Team Strengths:

  • Pitching

  • Infield Defense

  • Experience

Top Players: 

Outlook: Linton-Stockton returns a core group from their 2022 Regional Championship team, including Seniors Luke McDonald and Nathan Frady. McDonald posted a 1.62 ERA and 5-2 record in 56 IP for the Miners in 2022, while also batting .384 with 6 2B and 3 HRs. Frady went 4-1 with a 2.17 ERA in 58 IP as a junior, and was also an offensive contributor batting .313 with 5 2Bs. The Miners return Seniors Jaxon Walker (.290 avg) and Ethan Hall (.292 avg) to the lineup as well as Juniors Jamison Fields (.281 avg), Brayden Husband, and Ty Boyd. Boyd, Hall, and Walker will all be impact arms in some kind of role for the Miners’ pitching staff in 2023. Coach Jacob Harden is particularly excited about his incoming freshman class, expecting a handful of them to compete for varsity innings this season.
