Prep Baseball Louisiana Game of the Week (Week 8): Sulphur vs. Barbe

Alex Armand
Louisiana Scouting Director

Week 7 of the 2024 high school baseball season has come and gone, as teams across the state are finishing up district play and are getting ready for the playoffs.  Last week, our Game of the Week featured South Beauregard taking on Lutcher at Southeastern Louisiana University.  The Golden Knights defeated Lutcher by a score of 9-0, and were led by 2024 RHP Jace Duhon (Louisiana-Monroe) who tossed a complete-game shutout with 8 K's.  After reviewing this week's schedules of teams from across the state, we've decided on our Week 8 Game of the Week, which will feature Sulphur vs. Barbe on Friday April 12, 2024.  The Tors have been playing some good baseball as of late, as they'v won six out of their last seven games, with their only loss coming at the hands of Barbe last Saturday, by a score of 10-7.  The Bucs have really started to hit their stride at the right time, as they haven't lost a game since Sam Houston at the beginning of district play and now own an overall record of 24-5.  This is one of the best rivalries in all of Louisiana, so we fully expect both teams to play at a high level on Friday night.  Be sure to follow us, across all of our social media platforms, for our Week 8 Game of the Week between the Sulphur Golden Tornadoes and the Barbe Buccaneers!

GAME PREVIEW

Sulphur and Barbe will meet up for our Week 8 Game of the Week, on Friday April 12, 2024, at 6 PM at Barbe High School.  When the Tors and the Bucs meet, there are usually "fireworks", as it's one of the best district rivalries in all of Louisiana.  Sulphur currently owns a 22-8 overall record and have been playing some really good baseball as of late, as they've won six out of their last seven games, with their lone loss during that stretch coming at the hands of Barbe last Saturday.  Senior INF Bryce Fontenot is the "engine" of the Tors offense, as he's the guy that really makes this offense go.  Last week, the McNeese State recruit went 8-15 (.533) with a HR, 2B, 3B, 7 RBI, and 5 SB.  Junior INF Jackson Beddoe is another quality bat in the Tors lineup.  The former Future Gamer is hitting at a .333 clip over his last five games with 6 RBI and 3 R.  Seniors Cohen Babineaux and Espyn Trahan have also been really productive for the Tors as of late.  On the mound, Sulphur went with sophomore LHP Carter Wilson in Game 1, so we expect the Tors to go with senior RHP Carson Cauvin or junior RHP Slade Shove-Knox on Friday night.  Cauvin's last start came last Monday against Kinder, when he earned the win, after tossing a complete-game shutout, giving up only 2 H with 0 BB and 8 K's.  Shove-Knox earned the win against Southside last Thursday, after tossing 6 innings, giving up 1 ER on 2 H with 5 BB and 9 K's.  Barbe has had one of their tougher schedules in recent memory this year, and currently own a 24-5 overall record.  The Bucs have won their last nine games with their last loss coming at the hands of Sam Houston on March 16th.  The Bucs have caught the "injury bug" pretty good this season, but they got one of their key players back last week in junior C Presley Courville (Texas A&M), who has been hitting out of the leadoff spot.  Senior SS Owen Galt has really swung the bat well since Week 2 or 3 for the Bucs, as has fellow seniors Diego Corrales, Cameron Stutes, adn Collin Harris.  The Bucs went with Corrales on the mound in Game 1, so we fully expect for freshman LHP Lawton Littleton to toe the rubber.  Littleton is our top ranked southpaw in the state, thanks to his ability to locate his 80-84 mph FB to all quadrants, which pairs well with his "1-7" shaped 70-71 mph CB.  Both of these teams were able to get into each others bullpens last Saturday, which made the game turn into a more offensive matchup with the Bucs coming out on top by a score of 10-7.  We expect a lower scoring affair on Friday night with the winner being the team that throws the most strikes and gets the timely hits.
