SE Senior Games: Quick Hitters - Team Carolina Pitchers

Brandon Hall
Mid-Atlantic Scouting Director

Monday July 25th saw the 2nd annual Southeast Senior Games at LakePoint in Emerson, Ga.  For the 2nd straight year, a team of uncommitted seniors from North Carolina and South Carolina created Team Carolina.  Last year’s event saw a high number of commitments after the workout and game play.  With a great turnout of college coaches, we can expect more of the same from the 2022 event.

The day opened with the eight regions going through a pro-style workout, with live BP on the field.  After the workout, each region played two 7 inning games with controlled innings by PBR Scouts.  The innings were controlled to ensure scouts saw what they needed from pitchers and hitters, but worked to eliminate any unneeded stress on the pitchers involved.

You can see the full event roster and stats from the day HERE.

Quick Hitters - Team Carolina Pitchers

Garrett Pyne, RHP, Hickory Ridge HS, 2023
Large, athletic frame with broad shoulders and strength present.  Still room to continue to mature.  Stands 6-foot-6, 240 pounds.  Easy direction and clean arm swing to a high-¾ slot.  Better than average arm speed that tends to tick up as he quickens his pace in the delivery.  Fastball ranged 85-90 some ride through the zone.  Three pitch mix includes a darting slider and a split finger change with late, tumbling action.  Both thrown with solid arm speed.  Shows an ability to pitch off all three pitches.

Jackson Crow, RHP, Oxford HS (AL), 2023
Guesting for Team Carolina the 6-foot, 200 pound righty attacked the zone with 3 solid pitches.  Tall and in-line, lands online and square with his foot strike.  Short arm stroke works to load the scapular, working to a high-¾ slot.  Fastball at 84-87 and peaking at 2334rpm.  Excellent ride through the zone allowed him to elevate and create chase.  Breaking ball spun at 2328rpm avg, sitting 72-73.  Small hump out of the hand with hard top to bottom bite that has late depth.  Complimented the fastball and breaking ball with a short, late slider, spinning up to 2800rpm.

Sam Johnson, RHP, Mallard Creek HS, 2023
Lean 6-foot-3, 200 pound frame.  Solid direction working with a long arm swing and over-the-top slot.  Slightly closed through balance, worked level, landing on-line and square.  Better than average arm speed.  Fastball ranged 83-87 with above average ride through the zone.  Early, sweeping action on the breaking ball at 74-76, 1961rpm.  Flashed feel for a change-up at 82.

Chase McKelvey, RHP, Home School (SC), 2023
Long, lean, athletic frame.  Athletic delivery and arm.  Slightly closed through balance, works back to an on-line and square foot-strike.  Long arm action to a high-¾ slot.  Arm has some quickness to it.  Fastball at 82-84, spinning up to 2508rpm with solid ride and heavy run, 19.4in max, out of the hand.  Curveball is a potential weapon, spinning up to 2809rpm with sweep over depth.

Parker Shipman, RHP, Christ the King, 2023
Average frame that will continue to mature at 6-foot, 178 pounds.  Coils and loads the lower half, showing his back hip to the hitter.  Works level and back to an on-line foot-strike, occasionally falling off toward 1B in his finish.  Medium arm action gets to a high-¾ slot.  Athletic arm.  Above average quickness.  Fastball at 83-88 with occasional heavy run out of the hand.  Movement metrics were not consistent as he is still working to find a consistent line.  Solid feel and length for a slider at 72-75, 2023rpm.

Raeder McIntire, RHP, Central Cabarrus HS, 2023
Baseball player that may have dual potential.  Still raw on the bump with solid direction and a plunging arm action reaching an over-the-top slot.  Good arm speed.  Fastball at 79-83, with advanced ride through the zone, allowing him to pitch elevated at times and start the breaking ball up in the zone.  Breaking ball has big top to bottom tilt at 63-65, 1893rpm.

Connor Shoulders, LHP, Dixon HS, 2023
Average frame at 6-foot-1, 190 pounds.  Heavy workload throughout they day with the workout and game play, before throwing the final two innings in the Georgia heat.  Fastball worked to the arm side with solid run, late at times, peaking at 77.  Change-up could be a weapon with solid arm speed, working through the same window as the fastball to the arm side.  Change-up sat 59-65 with fade.
