On Friday, February 23rd, the Prep Baseball Ontario staff hosted it's first Scout Day of the 2024 season with the Canada Reds Academy Scout Day at Russell Sports Dome in Russell, Ontario. This event featured roughly 45 players from the Canada Reds organization in the 2024 - 2027 classes and allowed our staff an opportunity to get an in-depth look at the players, as well as collect updated metrics via our tech partners TrackMan and Swift Performance.

Earlier this week we broke down the top statistical performers from the event within our Statistical Analysis article. Now we will conlude our post-event coverage within this Quick Hits article as we bring you scouting notes and video on five standout performers from the showcase.

CANADA REDS ACADEMY SCOUT DAY: QUICK HITS

OF Nathan Roy: OF Nathan Roy was one of the big winners on Friday in Ottawa as he flashed loud tools and power projection while looking the part with a tall, lean frame at 6-foot-3, 180-pounds. First caught our attention with his throws during outfield drills, going 90, 92, 92, 93 on his four attempts. The right-handed hitter answered the bell during batting practice to close out the day, posting the best round and top exit velocity of 97.1mph. Whip in the bat with consistent hard contact (90.8avg EV, 60% Sweet Spot) and power potential as he continues to fill out. Highly intriguing talent out of the Canada Reds program and our staff is eager to see how the tools play in live-game action.

C Maxime Decarie: C Maxime Decarie was the other big-time performer on the positional side and caught our attention immediately with his swift work behind the dish. Proportionate frame at 5-foot-11, 180-pounds with a quick catch/throw, along with 78mph arm with all throws around the bag, culminating in a top pop-time of 1.85. The left-handed hitter showed some maturity throughout his round of BP, working to the big part of the field with a peak exit velocity of 90.1mph and distance of 344ft. Another talent from the Canada Reds Academy to get out and see this spring/summer.

RHP Aidan Hartholt: RHP Aidan Hartholt was one of the top arms to take the mound on Friday and posted the top fastball velocity at 88.2mph. Strong, burly frame at 6-foot-3, 205-pounds and featured a four-pitch mix while the fastball sat 86-88mph with 99% spin efficiency. Curveball and changeup both look to be further along than the slider with the ability to land both for strikes.

RHP Lukas McDowell: One of the most intriguing bullpens of the day and you can’t miss him with his outlier frame at 6-foot-8, 220-pounds. Creates extension and works downhill, allowing his fastball and other stuff to play up. Fastball sat 83-86mph from an easy, effortless delivery with long arm-action. Features a slider with sweeping-action at 75-77mph, along with a changeup at 80-82mph. Moves well with good control of his body and looks to be plenty more in the tank for McDowell.

RHP/3B Thomas Duarte: RHP/3B Thomas Duarte was another arm who flashed potential on the mound last Friday. Still some growing and maturing to come at 5-foot-10, 175-pounds and he filled up the zone with a 4-seam, sinker and curveball combination. At the dish, the right-handed hitter generated a peak exit velocity of 88.5mph, along with a peak distance of 297ft. One of the younger players from the event to keep tabs on these next couple years as he continues to develop.
