West Suburban Open: Blast Motion Board

Kevin Cronin
Tech Analyst, Area Scout

On Tuesday, June 28th, the PBR Illinois staff traveled to Lee Pfund Stadium in Wheaton, Illinois, to host the West Suburban Open. This event featured more than 20 prospects from the 2023-to-2026 graduating classes and provided our staff an opportunity to check-in on them as the summer progresses.

Earlier this week we published Quick Hits highlighting the top prospects of the event by class. We also rolled out a Statistical Analysis, bringing you a quick statistical analysis of those that participated in the event. We then dove deep into the data, looking at the pitch metrics and batted ball numbers from this event inside our TrackMan Files piece.

Today, with the help of our Blast Motion sensors, we're analyzing the swing metrics measured on Saturday at this high-caliber showcase.

Hand Speed (Peak & Average)

Rank Name State School Class Pos Hand Speed (max)
1 Jayden Malone IL Metea Valley High School 2023 OF 26.6 mph
2 Eric DeCosta IL Wheaton Warrenville South 2024 3B 24.1 mph
3 Aidan Thaxton IL St. Ignatius 2023 SS 23.3 mph
4 Mark Golminas IL Metea Valley 2023 OF 23.1 mph
5 Sohrab Rezaei IL University of Chicago Laboratory Schools 2023 SS 23.0 mph
6 Aidan Nolan IL New Trier 2024 CF 22.3 mph

Rank Name State School Class Pos Hand Speed (avg)
1 Jayden Malone IL Metea Valley High School 2023 OF 25.7 mph
2 Aidan Nolan IL New Trier 2024 CF 22.0 mph
3 Eric DeCosta IL Wheaton Warrenville South 2024 3B 21.9 mph
4 Mark Golminas IL Metea Valley 2023 OF 21.4 mph
5 Raymond Sansonetti IL Jones College Prep 2023 SS 21.1 mph
6 Stevie Hobbs IL Glenbard North 2023 3B 20.9 mph

Peak Hand Speed: The observed maximum speed as measured on the handle of the bat (measured six inches from the knob of the bat). Peak Hand Speed will occur prior to the moment of impact, very close to the commit time in the swing when the wrists unhinge.

Bat Speed (Average)

Rank Name State School Class Pos Bat Speed (avg)
1 Sohrab Rezaei IL University of Chicago Laboratory Schools 2023 SS 75.6 mph
2 Brendan Tunink IL Newman Central Catholic 2024 OF 73.9 mph
3 Mick Graham IL Salisbury CT 2024 OF 73.8 mph
4 Jayden Malone IL Metea Valley High School 2023 OF 72.8 mph
5 Eric DeCosta IL Wheaton Warrenville South 2024 3B 71.5 mph

Bat Speed: The observed speed of the sweet spot of the bat at impact. The sweet spot of the bat is measured six inches from the tip of the bat.

Rotational Acceleration (Peak & Average)

Rank Name State School Class Pos Rot. Acc (max)
1 Jayden Malone IL Metea Valley High School 2023 OF 32.7 g
2 Joey Raineri IL Lisle 2023 C 22.3 g
3 Stevie Hobbs IL Glenbard North 2023 3B 20.9 g
4 Seth Gilliland IL Waubonsie Valley 2025 LHP 20.8 g

Rank Name State School Class Pos Rot. Acc (avg)
1 Jayden Malone IL Metea Valley High School 2023 OF 27.9 g
2 Joey Raineri IL Lisle 2023 C 19.3 g

Body Rotation: A swing that has the appropriate relative contributions of body and bat rotations is an efficient and Powerful swing that maintains proper sequencing. An efficient baseball swing is one in which the body creates the initial movements, which is then transferred to the arms and out to the bat, thereby maximizing Bat Speed through this proximal-to-distal kinematic sequencing movement pattern.
